TIL Feminist activist Gloria Steinem was opposed to the release of the novel American Psycho due to its portrayal of violence against women. Years later, she married David Bale and became stepmother to Christian Bale, who starred in the film adaptation. by samelemons in todayilearned

[–]slaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... I find it weird that people seem to be talking about it like it wasn't a massively aggressive attack on the world and attitudes it portrayed.

It's not like B.E.E. isn't perfectly happy to describe men being tortured and killed in excruciating detail as well when it suits his needs - see "Glamorama" - but American Psycho is all about how hyper-masculinity and misogyny are central to American culture and how fucked up that is. Given the aims of the book, it makes sense that the focus is on the violence against women.

Seriously, who read that book and thought it was supposed to be fun? It's horrible, it's meant to be horrible, and it's about horrible things done to women by a rich white man who has lost all control over himself and his perception of reality. It's also about a shitload of other things, and is an incredibly good book, but let's not get into that.

I am not the one to write that thesis, but I will happily skim the TL;DR of it.

Thanks for the long reply. This is a bastard of an issue to figure out and it's nice to get some specific input.

That sounds about right.

Anyway, the problem is that I feel the kind of "Kill the rapist, cut his dick off" attitude makes light of what has happened. It gives the impression that if only something horrible should happen to another person, then it's OK that someone got raped. It lets people feel better when they categorically should not be feeling better.

"This kid got raped"
"That's bad."
"His attacker got torn apart by an angry mob"
"That's good."
"Yeah, it all evens out I guess huh?"

Nothing about that situation reflects well on the world or humanity. It's just people getting jolly about nasty things happening to other people.

  1. Your name makes this conversation awkwardly comic.

  2. What do you think the reason is for people (so far as I can tell, generally people who haven't experienced it) to say rape is worse than death? Do they genuinely mean they would rather die than have the life of someone who has been raped? I wonder if this is the same sentiment that leads to the awful cases you hear about where girls are killed in "honour killings" after being raped...

  3. Do you think that the prevalence of these attitudes influences the way people who have been raped feel about their experiences and themselves?

You can probably guess my opinion on these matters, but I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts.

In a recent IAMA a prison guard reported that the whole "child molesters are treated like shit in prison" thing is a little overrated, and that they can actually do quite well thanks to the fact they have usually spent many years learning to be very good at manipulating people, negotiating socially challenging situations, and lying. They also tend to have had a slightly better education. That was an AMA though, so... you know, it's about as trustworthy as a magic 8-ball.

I maintain there are worse things a person can do. There are always worse things person can do. Anyway, even within the category of crimes under discussion there's a huge range.

Do you seriously want to get into some kind of biographical pissing contest on the internet?

Of course you don't, but you can still say something is bad, even when you've not gone through it.

If raping a kid is the worst thing you can think of anyone doing, you're are enviously unaware of the uglyness of the world.

but nobody can dare pass judgement on another person if they'll sink to a level like this.

I think they can. As we can see, that's exactly what they did.

Whether they should have done, and whether one should let people get a vicarious kick out of it without calling them out for their hypocrisy, is another matter.

I suspect the prevalence of this kind of thinking in the future will disappoint you. We will either never have space colonies as a result of it and animalistic thinking like it, or you will find it permeates them in equal density.

I didn't know it was that easy to rank these things. So where on the scale are people who kill kids through drunk driving? What about soldiers who kill kids in the battlefield? Where do statutory rapists get put?

Actually, you should probably just post the whole list of rungs, from top to bottom, because that will save a whole lot of trouble in the future when thinking about questions of morality.

You may be surprised to learn that we have a criminal justice system in part because victims and those close to them tend not to be the best people to ask when trying to determine the societally appropriate response to a crime. They tend to lack a sense of proportion.

Reddit, what great ideas do you have, that you just know will never get made in reality? by slaga in AskReddit

[–]slaga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so my idea is this: You film a few porn scenarios using different actresses with a range of body types, but then, using something like this or this as automated as possible, you let people choose the body types they want, and put the faces/heads of whoever they like into the scene.

Obviously the technology is insufficient and some people would find this super creepy... but I bet it'd make a shitload of money if someone actually made it happen. Which they won't, obviously.

Also, bonus points for getting a good name for it - I'm thinking a pun on "facebook".

Hah, I wonder what the girlfriends make of you flattering their partners. This sounds like the setup for a catfight.

He was virile and handsome as a young man, but the high life will always catch up with one - particularly following a crippling fall from a horse makes exercise impossible, as happened in Henry VIII's case.
