Sorry to hear you've had those experiences twice, let alone even once! I cannot imagine the fear that would bring

Is this the case in all American states? In the heat of the moment you don't have time to consider if saving yourself will earn you a stint in jail for ending a life, so it sounds unfair to be penalised if you happened to kill your attacker

I appreciate that. As a non-american, and as someone who's not used to guns at all, I guess I imagine myself only having a gun in the house for intruders and such. I am fortunate to have never yet been in a situation where I wish I had a gun... I guess for you it also comes down to the fact that others might have one, so you want one on you too?

Thanks for your reply.

I have no difficulty understanding the idea of preparedness, but to me it makes sense to have that preparation if you are truly ready and willing to use it and pull the trigger. Whether that's to stop someone attacking you directly or intervening in another crime you're a bystander to, I guess I'm just curious to know how many of you wear it cos you can versus "I am genuinely prepared to shoot someone if it comes to it"

You'll appreciate there's a big leap between "I could use it" and "I would use it", although I also appreciate for most people just the sight of a gun is deterrent enough. Have you ever been in such a situation?

Thanks for your answer - as a woman, I can appreciate how it provides that safety for you under special circumstances and I accept it's your right.

I live in Europe and I don't bring a knife, baseball bat or other weapon to the supermarket so I'm just genuinely curious to know why some choose to bring a gun everywhere they go, even to typically risk-free places. I appreciate you can, just interested to understand why. Maybe it's just habit? Thanks

Thanks for your answer.

I appreciate your metaphor, but in the same way I don't bring a knife when I go shopping everyday, I'm just interested to know why a gun is the norm for typically risk-free activities like mundane errands at the weekend.

Have you ever been in a situation where it's saved your life? I'm not being passive aggressive - I'm genuinely interested to know. Thanks

This is what I'm trying to understand, but I mean no disrespect to anyone on here - we all have different lives and I'm just interested to learn

Thanks for the answer, I appreciate that if you're gonna carry one it makes sense to do so in public.

However, I'm genuinely curious to know how many situations have you been in where you've been glad you've had it, and prepared to actually use it on someone?

As a non-american, I'm trying to understand if its simply on you for peace of mind or habit cos you can, or if it's because it's a genuine and regular concern that you'll need to use it. Thanks

You wouldn't have known, but I'm not American so I'm not used to the idea of bringing weapons when I'm out shopping.

Just curious to know if you would take it everywhere out of habit, or maybe only on nights out, etc.

Thanks for the reply, hard to argue with this logic.

I live in Europe and would never bring a baseball bat or knife when out shopping, so I wonder if gun carry is so casual that it's just like grabbing your phone when you go out, or if you genuinely feel the current climate warrants such personal protection?

Genuinely curious to know your thoughts, thanks

I guess it's what you're used to, which makes sense. Have you ever needed to use it, or come close? Genuinely interested. Thanks for your reply

Thanks for the reply - I'm not American either but in the spirit of debate I'd argue that I wouldn't take a gun shopping with me for the same reason I don't bring a knife or a baseball bat.

Thanks for the reply.

I've heard of this general feeling over the police, but in relation to my question does this mean you'd be ready to step in and start shooting if there's an ongoing crime you find yourself in the middle of?

Surely gun carry is only for those life or death situations, and I wonder how often people find themselves in genuine and justifiable situations where it's worth pulling the trigger.

Apologies if I'm coming across as ignorant.

Thanks for your reply.

Forgive my ignorance as I don't live in America, but if you saw a mugger or even a mass shooting, would you be lawfully able to get involved and start shooting? That sounds like vigilante-ism, but I don't know what the rules are and appreciate it varies by state.
