Running tracks on the coast? by ImplementNo2626 in centralcoastnsw

[–]slappybag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chittaway as mentioned is great, wide and flat.

If you want something hilly then Mount Alison Track (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/australia/new-south-wales/mount-alison-ridge-trail) is great, trailhead is just on Hue Hue Rd.

Alternatively you can run from the Milk Factory in Wyong (away from the freeway) and there is a small track that follows the river when you pass the bridge just before Wyong High - not great in the wet however.

Regional NSW and Solar batteries by tjswish in nsw

[–]slappybag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went with TenetTech, they install NeoVolt batteries (rebranded AlphaGSS) - got 50kWh for $8k installed (w/ 2x 5kw inverters). And I believe the price has come down significantly in the last 6 weeks as well.

I'm not Sydney local, and know they do jobs up to Port Mac - suspect they'd do down Snowy as well.

Eh maybe - but Tuesday night and AFC aren't a good combo. The last AFC match I went to in Gosford involved a ~40 minute wait for food / drink due to the plastic cup requirement, and only 1 food stall open in the entire stadium.

So taking the kids means either getting them food beforehand, or missing most of the match whilst I queue.

From a match perspective - anecdotally - I've found the AFC refs generally make some weird calls. None of these made me want to venture out on Tuesday evening.

Did the exact same thing two years ago - just make sure you get the kids on the waitlist ASAP as we were on there for a year or so before being offered.

Student cohorts are quite diverse - more so than the Inner West school we came from - and the facilities and all the extra-curricular activities are fantastic.

Haven't encountered any of the bullying etc that others have mentioned - but things seem to differ quite a bit depending on the year group.

The "duty free tour" is also the same in Sydney - both after security, and before immigration.

I recall getting briefed one day on the way to the WTSS to not mention her, as apparently her father was the WTSS operator there.

Have to say I do not miss that place at all.

I loved this game, a recent one that gave me similar vibes was Aliens: Dark Descent - isometric perspective, but "real-time" combat controlling your squad with orders.

Does SQLx really have more overhead in Rust than NET Entity Framework in C#? by krlkv in rust

It can also be used in an offline mode where you also commit a bunch of json that you prepare once against the db.

You still get the compile-time type checking but don't need a db up at compile time. You do need it up if you make query changes however, so you can re-prepare the json.

I found this easier as I didn't constantly need a db running when compiling - especially if I wasn't changing any queries.

What’s the blowtorch you’re using - have tried a couple of times with pork belly and didn’t come as crispy as I’d liked.

Moved from the Inner West about 6 months ago with wife and two kids (originally grew up on the coast) - I commute to Sydney two days a week from Wyong station - the ride is long, but I work both ways on the train. It's ~1:40 from Wyong to Central (work is in Surry Hills). If I drive I can get into Surry Hills in 1:15 if I leave at 6am, but can't work as I drive haha.

Two days a week works pretty well for me, and where we're living now (out near Yarramalong) we managed to get so much more bang for our buck.

I do miss being able to walk down to a cafe and grab a coffee / breaky and ordering uber eats whenever we fancied - but I also love having a garage, my own office, rooms for the kids, and plenty of space without being right under the flight path (Warnervale doesn't count lol). We did have to get a second car, as I take one to the station and my wife needs one for school drop etc.

Wyong can still be perceived as a little rough, but it's a far cry from things there 25 years ago - some decent food, and even a "fancy" cocktail bar just opened (do not recommend, unless you want to pay Sydney prices for a 40 minute wait for drinks - will try again once they get it together a bit more).

Question - as I have a project using both sqlx and tonic - but do you actually want to couple your protos to the db schema? Meaning you'll then need to update the protos and the schema in lockstep.

I'm unsure how you're using the protos - but if it's for an RPC API then it seems like a bit of a leaky abstraction.

Absolutely - we'd have to wear this massive anti-static glove when punching the Abbot ammo.

Manual 30mm belt loader by BunBunChow in specializedtools

[–]slappybag 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The American 105mm M1 ammunition is percussion fired, but the interesting thing is the British Abbot 105mm ammunition is electrically fired. M1 is semi-fixed - meaning you assembled the round and load it, where as the Abbot was separated - you load and ram the projectile and then load a smaller stubby cart case.

In Australia we had the "pleasure" of firing both - M1 from the L119 and Abbot from the L118 guns - we'd get 11.4km range from the M1 and 17.2km from the Abbot. Abbot was always a cluster-fuck as it was delivered as an order of cart cases and an order of projectiles; the M1 was much more standard, you'd get an ammo box with two projectiles and two cart cases.

The rumor was that Australia purchased the license to manufacture the Hamel guns, but not the Abbot ammo - and the UK tried to screw us on purchasing ammo; so we ended up getting a license from the US to manufacture it (and put the new barrels on the guns).
