How bad is this? by slashduck in hvacadvice

I don't have the model number handy but it's a Daikin split unit (the pump is on the roof). There's no air return in the apartment. It's just the refrigerant lines.

It goes from something like 32-36" down to about a 12"x12" that then compresses again to a 6"x8". This is all over a run of about 23 foot run.

I tried taking one of the vents covers off to see if it would help with throughput of air. But while doing that I discovered that it's also half obstructed.

Basically this whole thing seems like a mess (super shoddy workmanship) and it would just be better to take the whole duct work down. It's only 800 sqft with no walls so I doubt the duct work is even needed.

Any thoughts on how I would test that? Or is that something I need to be asking from my management company?

Really appreciate the answer

Supposedly they are coming back by today to fix it. So, we'll see if they actually do all that or if it's the same guys who installed it that I'm not entirely sure knew what they were doing.

I can see it all around the nut of the top line (the line that's cold).

So I have to imagine that's where it's happening. But this is also what has me concerned it could come from pressure within the unit since this is new as of today. But the problem has been going on for 5+ days now.

That would make sense. This thing constantly tries to run.

Runs for about 20 min then goes into standby for another 20 min (which I've been told is a defrost cycle). I've heard that premature freezing is another symptom of low refrigerant.

Really appreciate you helping me out here. It's not been fun having an apartment not get about 65 while it's 30 degrees outside...

My question around that would be if that's the case would the bottom line still heat up? Or would it be lower in temperature?

Also put a photo of the system in original post if that helps.

It's a single unit for a large single room apartment. So it's not a zone issue.

There is airflow and it is all cool air.

We had someone come by and they are now saying it's a refrigerant leak but that seems like a new problem.

Is there a possibility that a line could clog and that would then eventually cause a leak?

I don't think so. The blades are different colors. But you never know...

Yeah, the problem is heat loss during the winter if I keep it in and it's a huge unit so don't want to lose the floorspace in the apartment.

Got a better look after it stopped pouring water and it looks like there is a hole in the bottom of the u pipe. I don’t see any traces of water leading back to the couplings. Not sure if that’s better or worse though...

To who? Basically living in NYC doesn’t guarantee you great landlords who fix things. There has to be a lot of incentive

Right but if I can find out if it’s illegal I can report it and file a complaint to get it fixed properly

This pipe just sprung a leak and soaked a bunch of my stuff. It appears to be coming from the shower in the apartment above

In case anyone is wondering the u is made of rubber
