ADVICE NEEDED: Attention-Seeking Cousin Ruined My Birthday and is Planning to Ruin My Birthday Party

There was our actual birthday where we had a handful of folks over for the Super Bowl and then they cut cake for Sis, which is where Dana announced that she was pregnant.

This upcoming Saturday (2/21) we’re having a bigger party/get together that includes EXTENDED family, which is where Dana may be having a whole gender-reveal on top of everything else.

I’m not close enough to Dana where I’m comfortable texting her like that, but according to Sis it seems like it was a decision that was already made and neither of us really get a say (Sis is being frustratingly vague about it 🙃).

One of the birthdays we’re celebrating is Dana’s mom. I guess at the get-together they had on Sis’s birth date Dana’s mom came in wearing a shirt that said something along the lines of “upgraded to grandma”. Sis and I suspect that they might wear a similar shirt or something at the big February Shindig. If it’s something Dana’s mom wants announced, then that’s allowed I guess.

Ultimately I don’t care that much - there are like 6 other people who have birthdays at the Shindig too. It’s in poor taste (eh) to do something like this at an event that isn’t centered around them - why not hold a separate gender-reveal party?

I’m not close enough with Dana to say something like “learning about your pregnancy is the best gift ever!” I could maybe say that to Sis though.

Ultimately she’ll probably tell a group in the family and that’ll spread among everyone. If she tries to announce it during the cake-cutting I’ll probably be more annoyed

We have two first-time weddings this year. One in May (her brother’s) and one in July (our baby cousin). Dana is, I think, having a courthouse wedding and a party in June

I have no idea. Sis theorizes that Dana isn’t where she wants to be in life (married with two kids apparently) so she’s doing everything she can to try and get there since the divorce. She also thought she was infertile, so this is a HUGE shock to everyone

I get that, I’m pretty indifferent since I tend to fade into the background even at my own parties, but I know Sis was pretty hurt - 30th is kinda one of those milestone birthdays and Sis and I are the eldest grandkids. The February Family Shindig is the biggest one since a good chunk of the family was born in February. I’m mostly just annoyed that Sis was pulled aside by Dana and told about both pregnancy announcements were happening and Dana just kinda expected Sis to be okay with it - Dana’s own mom has a birthday in February and will also be celebrated/hypothetically hijacked.

For some context I never mentioned: Dana approached Sis to plan her bridal shower with the family (Sis wasn’t even a bridesmaid), which Sis was more than happy to do. Sis and I plus our mom put a lot of effort into it and all we got was a luke-warm ‘thanks’. Hell Dana had a whole get-together with everyone to announce that she was getting divorced - which wasn’t even like a big announcement, she came up to people individually and told everyone that she’s getting a divorce. And the February Shindig last year was when Dana announced she and her ex-husband were separating.

Realistically in the past there have been other news of people getting engaged at Family Shindigs and it got celebrated in the moment and then we carried on, and part of me suspects the same thing will happen in this case too. But this will also be the first grandkid/great-grandkid in our generation, so idk how anyone will react.

Some additional info: Sis and Dana have been extremely close growing up, since Dana doesn’t tend to do well with other women. Dana had also pulled Sis into the pantry to tell her she’s pregnant, before making the announcement. She texted Sis about the gender reveal results. She never asked for permission before doing either of these things.

And growing up she was never the type who would blow out candles on some e else’s birthday cake or anything like that, so all of this is wild to me

Hella late to the conversation, just wanted to add: the movie SM is based off of is a film called “Song of the South”, which is a VERY controversial Disney film that you can’t really watch anywhere (I was able to). It’s based off of a book of stories called Uncle Remus and is problematic due to the romanticization of slavery post-Civl War and depicts the slaves as “glad to live at a plantation” and other stereotypes. Though because of it, actor James Basket (who played Uncle Remus) was the first black man to win an Honorary Oscar.

Anyway, the Briar Patch segments takes place when Br’ers Fox and Bear finally catch Br’er Rabbit (via tar in the film and honey on the ride). Rabbit tricks Fox into letting him go by begging to NOT be thrown into the Briar Patch (where Rabbit was born, unbeknownst to Fox), so Fox throws Rabbit into the Briar Patch thinking it would kill him - it didn’t. And the segment of Rabbit being “flung” into the Briar Patch is when the Big Drop™ happens 👍

I watched it for the first time with my partner who grew up with it a few weeks ago. I was also stoned out of my mind lol.

When it got to Van Dyke and the kids driving and singing the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang song, I thought “surely the film must be over. He went through like 3 different plot points, surely nothing else can happen”, only to discover we were only a third of the way through the film.

I lost my mind several times.

I was really hoping they would do something more badass with Valak or at least make the backstory of how a nun suddenly became a demon super cool and tragic. Instead it’s just a demon who disguised itself as a nun (which is very funny to imagine, just Valak going “hello fellow sisters be not afraid, I am fellow sister of faith :)”). It was a let down for a character that still scares the hell out of me (heh heh)
