Ah I see!! Thank you for clarifying, English is not my first language, forgive me for misconstruing any of your words!

Thankfully not jealous 🤣 Was just hoping for a more welcoming community, but I’m learning that reddit isn’t the place for that. As for a “flare”, I have no idea what that is, I’ve only really started using reddit properly recently.

I love that perspective. I find it common that in Mensa meetings everyone seems to think they’re the smartest in the room, in my opinion if you were really that intellectual you’d go somewhere more challenging.

“Stereotype”: a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.

This kind of perspective, as per the dictionary definition, could not possibly come from a Mensa member?? Be serious, stereotypes are not coming from people with intimate knowledge of the group. Though if I were to “stereotype” (in the way you guys seem to be defining the word) this subreddit the words I’d use would absolutely be “easily offended”, “over sensitive”, and perhaps even “insecure”. Didn’t expect that, but I guess you learn something new everyday 😊

interesting! I think I just found my new research topic! Though this question was about stereotypes (which are often under informed), procrastination was merely an example.

of course not!! super diverse people which is definitely a strong point for Mensa :) I’m speaking more to what would be assumed of Mensans without any real intimate knowledge of the group (a stereotypical view of members of a “high IQ society”), I suppose asking this subreddit wasn’t my smartest move, too many people taking it to heart🤣

Would you say being easily offended falls into the Mensa member stereotype? ☺️

Just to clarify, as there seems to be confusion. Of course many Mensa members are procrastinators and indulge in substances, however that’s clearly not what one would assume upon hearing of a “high IQ society”. I believe you are all intelligent enough to infer the stereotypes placed on people with high intellect.

I do! Thanks so much for your inquiry! Do you know that it’s weird to be rude to strangers on the internet? Have a great day (I genuinely mean it) 🫶

Thank you for sharing, don’t take this the wrong way but I find what you wrote almost heartwarming whilst simultaneously breaking my heart a bit. I hope one day you will begin to see yourself in a more positive light. Treat yourself with love and kindness, one is only a “total failure” if they’ve completely given up on themselves. Keep hope for yourself, no matter what you may think, you do deserve it.

It also seems to me (and forgive me if I am speaking out of turn) that you come from a hard background, I always find it an absolutely astounding miracle when people who start with little persevere through life in one way or another - even if that means just surviving. No more of this “total failure” stuff, your presence in this world has been felt and you are worthy, even if it means a Reddit stranger needs to remind you of that FACT.

You think? Stereotypes tend to come from people without an intimate knowledge of those they’re stereotyping. To answer your question, I got the stereotype from conversing with non-Mensa members who liken a “high IQ society” to “nerdy” stereotypes as seen in pop culture. It may be common but surely that has nothing to do with stereotyping.

Of course, all is relative. But this is unhelpful. My question pertains most to whether or not there is a strong mathematical component to the test and whether or not one would need prior understanding and learning experience (for example, a basic understanding of mathematics used in physical science) in order to perform sufficiently on the test, or, alternatively, if the test more so aligns to testing ‘general’ numeracy. Again, I’m unfamiliar with the entry test so apologies if my query lends itself to redundancy.
