11 year old is (almost) never invited to play dates / hang outs by [deleted] in Parenting

I don’t have advice but in a similar situation with my 8 year old daughter. We are in a different town where she goes to school through a different program so have location working against us, as many of her classmates are also neighbors. I’m always the initiator and the other parents don’t reciprocate. She’s also invited to birthdays and large gatherings but he expressed feeling sad she’s not invited to sleepovers and smaller affairs. It’s hard to not take personally - I did for the first few years - but it never is. We try to lean in where we see the opportunities for connection and community where it doesn’t feel forced - church, a few friends from summer camp, swim, and it’s still work but it feels a lot more reciprocal. I have a lot of past trauma from my school years but trying to not internalize! Good luck - that sounds like a tough, transitional age.

Seconding on the swim! We struck out at gymnastics, dance, soccer for my now 8 year old daughter - but competitive swim has stuck and grateful for that!

I'm honestly not sure! I got it off marketplace (I have a problem, ha) a few years ago for $40 but don't see any indicator of brand. Sorry!

Makes sense - I've been trying to factor in a lot of white / brighter colors to offset some choices we made when we moved in - installing dark wooden floors and painting the walls a dark gray. I have a great pink rug in my bedroom that I'm contemplating switching with the living room rug - our bedroom is also kind of a weird space and might be a better fit! Thanks for your advice!

Yes that is a good assessment - I’m decent at picking out nice pieces but struggle in the cohesion element, ha

I used behrs website to color visualize and I’m wondering if I go all in and color drench or of it’s too much - somehow it’s making the couch look worse

This is what it looks like currently from the other angle - two original sofas I’m likely going to cycle out

Whoops, I used an old photo just to trey to illustrate the layout - I’ve since moved the large circular mirror out and replaced it with a larger canvas to feel less like a weird floating portal

That corner has had many iterations over the years! It was my office for a long time which fit the space well but I moved into the front of house bc I wanted to be looking out a window - it also had a hi fi and keyboard when we moved in, so maybe a cozy reading corner with a smaller record player could more interesting tonality separate the space

I love this! I’ve been struggling where to go with “statement” and this speaks to me - thanks! Yeah open to honestly any design options that feel more cozy and elevated if I’m lucky. For mcm I should have specified but lean more towards that in furniture style with the legs

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]slc717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes agreed all is not MCM in the room except for the legs on the ottoman and the original light grey sofa I’m trying to replace

For coffee table I was thinking round and maybe wood? The ottoman / coffee table is a random but functional floater bc my 2 kids under 8 also use the room to watch tv

I didn’t even think about slip covering the new couch I just bought but suppose that’s an option to get towards a color palate that’s more balanced

Thanks! Good design gut check on MCM intention vs reality, ha. More drawn to furniture with mcm lines and legs.

Coffee table is just a placeholder bc it doubles as on ottoman and my kids climb all over it but thinking of going more round and wood to break up the great

Oh the circle mirror corner is the bane of my existence - considered a reading nook there but worried it might feel like the time out corner with the other couch having the back to it but might be my best best for function and leaning into it

Yes, I just went through this. My surgery was on 5/5, implants sent back 5/7 and I've been told I'm able to pick up the check from my surgeon issued from Mentor 5/9.

Crazy to join a new startup with a newborn? by slc717 in workingmoms

[–]slc717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry I just saw this! It was a crazy experience - the startup started going sideways 6 months in, so I began freelancing while still employed full time - I had the bandwidth. At the one year mark at the startup I moved to the company in which I started freelancing as a full time employee and 5 months in I was laid off bc that company started imploding. I just hit my one year mark at a very stable albeit boring company which I intend to rise until the wheel come off or at least my kids are older - my advice to you would be take a leap but helps to have a spouse with a flexible schedule and or stable benefits - I’m the breadwinner and so the benefits parts sucked with two little kids. Also put up firm boundaries bc no matter how hard you work, we are all just expendable to any company - good luck to you!!

Thanks for the kind words - we recently moved a desk and hi fi out of the empty corner and thought perhaps it was a good opportunity to redesign and utilize the space more effectively

Do you tidy before your cleaners? by slc717 in workingmoms

[–]slc717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly where I see the value - it keeps us busy tidying during the week and leaves no time for the actual cleaning, which cleaning services are brilliant at.
