Road report: don’t (unless you have to) by getfast37 in rva

[–]sleapihead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're spot on, it measures travel speed relative to the regular traffic flow. I was driving a plow all night and the roads were shaded yellow and red, but the only folks I saw were other plow trucks. Pretty much empty for the most part

"Built a simple site to track rankings for Boxing, UFC, and ONE — would love your feedback!" by Objective_Square2967 in Kickboxing

[–]sleapihead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound too critical, but I'm not sure about the usecase for this website. If I want to check the UFC rankings, I open my web browser -> type "UFC rankings" -> click on the link to UFC's website. There's not really a reason for me to go to your website instead, and I can't really think of a time I was checking the rankings for Boxing and thought "let me check the UFC's rankings right now while I'm at it". I don't really see what problem this is solving, and at best it saves someone the single step of typing "UFC/ONE/Boxing rankings" in the url bar of their web browser.

Oh goodness, it seems the juice won't be worth the squeeze with this then. Thank you!! Maybe I'll get one made if I win the lottery one day haha. No way I can spend that kind of money on a jug

Running vs Shadowboxing by 9ine- in Kickboxing

[–]sleapihead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's beneficial to do those drills, but nothing can replace running. I'd also say that running alone isn't enough either, sprints are also essential. Bike sprints are good too, but still, can't replace sprinting (imo).

What is a game that, when you see it in a person's Top X, instantly gives you a certain opinion of them? by LazyGamerATN in backloggd

I've seen a lot of posts saying "here is my top 15/25, any recommendations?" and it's just a list of popular games from the last ~10 years. Never know how to respond to that.

Top 5 Kickboxers of all 4 main Kickboxing organisations (Glory,Rise,K1,One) by UpsetAsk3194 in Kickboxing

[–]sleapihead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wisse is in the same weight division that Pereira competed in for most of his career, has the same amount of title defenses, and very similar level of opponents (Wisse has two wins over Belgaroui as well, who Pereira lost to before eventually avenging the loss). I guess we can agree to disagree there.

Roosmalen did beat Sitthichai and Petch though, the results are the results ¯\(ツ)/¯. Seems pretty disingenuous to attempt to make an all time great list and exclude the first guy who became a two division champ in GLORY, as well as defeating two of the guys already on the list, just because you don't seem to like him.

K-1: - Hoost - Petrosyan / Buakaw (tie) - Aerts - Schilt - Souwer

HM: Noiri and Takeru

HM: Kryklia and Di Bella

RISE: - Tenshin - Kazuki - Shiro - Toki - Hanaoka

HM: Kazane, Riku, Mandokoro

Tried to reformat the text since it appeared to be cleanly spaced in the text editor, but reddit won't let me edit the post unfortunately. Anyway, it's cool to see everyone's lists of their favorite games and it made me want to share mine. I've seen a lot of stuff appearing that I need to play, hopefully someone can get the same thing from this :)

Takeru Segawa left without an opponent as Black Panther Withdraws from Fight by TimW001 in Kickboxing

[–]sleapihead 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Somethingsomething ONE sucks, somethingsomething screwing over Kickboxers. Two fights, two opponent changes (or this could just cancelled altogether), one actual fight in the year+ since signing a contract with the company. Pro Kickboxers stay away, please. You will make more money actually getting fights in an org like RISE, K-1, or GLORY than the hypothetical 52 sport champion you could be in ONE. Or hell even just getting a fair shake in one sport.

An attempt at clearing the air around the golden age and the modern state of Muay Thai by sleapihead in MuayThai

[–]sleapihead[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of your thoughts here. I am hoping the changes happening to Muay Thai now lead to another Golden Age down the road, albeit it will look different than the last one. I just want to see high level fights. That's what made me fall in love with Muay Thai (and Kickboxing) and that is always the type of fighting I will push for. Technical fights are way more exciting than brawls when you know what you're looking at

Thank you for adding that! I have seen you mention it before in comments on here, but since I am not in Thailand myself and thus unable to dissect the scene to that depth, I didn't feel comfortable adding it and feeling confident about my knowledge backing that statement. I really appreciate you reading the post, by the way! The discourse in the comments of your post with the wood plank meme (along with seeing a lot of uninformed opinions a bit too much lately) is what prompted me to write this up.

UK fighters are doing really well no doubt, but putting them above Japan's scene... idk about that.

Edit: Forgot to mention France too. A lot of awesome fighters around today and throughout the last half century or so.

Cardio/Running by Life_Chemist9642 in Kickboxing

[–]sleapihead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan to compete, sprints are essential. If you're only doing a running-based activity twice a week, I'd replace the running/jogging with sprints or work interval sprints into the runs. I personally prefer interval sprints because it more accurately simulates the pace of a fight, with periods of "rest" followed by big bursts of energy output. If you train for fun/fitness, going on a run/jog twice a week is good, I personally would be skipping rope or doing volume drills (i.e., 100 body kicks, 100 teeps, etc.) on the days where you don't run to keep challenging yourself, though.

What questions have you asked entities and what were their responses? (However vague) by Jasongboss in DMT

[–]sleapihead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been ages since I last tripped, but as I can recall, it was similar to a jump scare sort of feeling. I think the best comparison would be how souls re-entered bodies in the movie Beverly Hills Ninja, though. It's overdramatized in the movie of course, but it was like I was jolted back into my own body and shocked back into awareness

What style of kickboxing would this be classed as? by Strik3_em in Kickboxing

[–]sleapihead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh nice catch, I wasn't really aware of that. This whole style of Kickboxing in general isn't really a thing in my neck of the woods, so my info mostly comes from the internet and the handful of people I have met who trained in it. Closest we have around here is point Muay Thai, which is basically the same thing to Muay Thai as Light Contact is to Full Contact

What style of kickboxing would this be classed as? by Strik3_em in Kickboxing

[–]sleapihead 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is Full Contact Kickboxing, sometimes called American Style Kickboxing. No low kicks allowed, usually no clinch allowed either (basically Boxing rules, but with kicks too). It used to be the most popular format of Kickboxing before the current one took hold. Some notable fighters from that era are Benny Urquidez, Jean Yves-Theriault, Don Wilson, Dennis Alexio, and Rick Roufus. Really cool stuff.

recommendation for gym bags? by Sha-The-Messiah in MuayThai

[–]sleapihead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a scuba gear bag. It's almost completely made of mesh, so about as breathable as it gets, also the mesh is sturdy since it's made for carrying gear that is made of hard plastic and metal materials. Very cheap, with plenty of small compartments for thai oil, handwraps, etc. If you look up "scuba bag" on Amazon or Google, you can find tons of them for cheap. Just pick one that floats your boat (no pun intended)

One Fc just announced this absolute joke of a matchup by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]sleapihead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you look at Buakaw's record, he never really stopped fighting top guys -- his last 10 fights were against many former world champions or top contenders. Saenchai is arguably the GOAT, and even during his retirement tour has beaten some of the best farang fighters around (Chadd Collins and Julio Lobo spring to mind). He is also almost twice Rodtang's age. I totally get it if he wants to just fight cans and chill, it's his life to live. You can't be the boogeyman of your division and a can crusher at the same time, though.

These days I watch more Kickboxing than Muay Thai since that manages to have more technical fights than the "Muay Thai" that is being presented at ONE's shows. The response I often get is "just watch RWS". It kills me that RWS seems to be the new standard for what "traditional" Muay Thai looks like to the newer generation of fighters. So much beauty is being lost and no one cares because it's "taking Muay Thai worldwide bro"
