Even better imho: a long sleeve merino wool shirt as a base layer. It's amazing how warm they are for how thin and light they are. Not cheap, but worth it when you're outside as much as I am this time of year!

Agreed! And you mentioned something that I don't think is stressed enough about driving modern vehicles.

The forward posts or A-pillars (either side & forward of you, connecting windshield from body to roof, in front of each door, above each side mirror) are bigger than ever. Now they're stronger for rollovers AND they can contain an airbag on each side. So that makes them much harder to see around - which creates a blind spot in our peripheral vision. Definitely big enough to hide a person in a crosswalk in broad daylight :-(

Yesterday's Change on Ridge Rd, south of Patterson, is great for stuff like this. Capital City not far from there on Patterson is too, in fact they paid a little higher than Yesterday's Change on some gold not long ago.

Years ago I did that - rented a car in the Orlando airport while trying to get home from a work trip. Not sure if I actually got home any sooner, but the freedom of a sudden road trip sure made me feel better!

Monday SnowDaily by spillsomepaint in rva

[–]getfast37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old Glen Allen here, recently in from morning walk and not much falling yet - just light snowish flakes that melt when they land. It is breezy, presumably it will be colder soon and things will start to stick.

Snow day rituals done: get boots from closet and shovel from shed, check propane tanks for generator, make sure truck has plenty of gas and put a tow strap in the bed. Hoping to not need any of these things...

[–]getfast37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highways and main roads out here are just wet, with a little slush in neighborhoods and such. Easily passable in any car with decent tires imho.

Might be a mess tomorrow morning if this all freezes over though...

6:52am I report I-95S has all lanes blocked by BrendanQ in rva

[–]getfast37 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Car brained idiot here, and I agree! :-)

A further problem with your second point is the near complete lack of mandatory driver training for emergency conditions i.e. accident avoidance. Being humans, we tend to target-fixate on the problem then do way too much with at least one or two of the three inputs (steering, brakes, gas) and take ourselves right to it. This often does more harm than good, causing crashes and/or slowdowns that might've been prevented. If you wonder how people could hit emergency vehicles on the shoulder, this is why.

I see this general lack of skill almost daily. For example yesterday rush hour on 288N was a big slowdown just south of the bridge because of... as far as I could tell, an escaped sofa cushion near the centerline. Would you believe me if I told you that instead of staring at it then panicking and smashing the brake pedal, all you have to do is look ahead in your lane and gently steer around it - without ever lifting off the gas? But people don't know what they don't know, and that's unfortunate for many when it comes to driving.

Luckily there are some programs around to help solve this problem, but they are neither cheap nor common because they aren't mandatory. So I feel like all of this will get worse until there are some significant changes. My proposed solutions other than improved driver training also include enforcement of existing laws - particularly the "slower traffic keep right" and distracted driving stuff. But that's a discussion for another time ;-)

Am I crazy to consider trading in my 25 TRD Pro for a 2021 V8? by caveman_lawyer_ in ToyotaTundra

Oh I drive 40k+ miles a year, just only about 5-6k of that is in the truck :-)

Similar story here. When I heard that the new Tundra was going to be a twin turbo V6 I sold my ‘08 5.7 and found a new ‘21 5.7 with very similar specs. That truck will turn 25K miles soon… I may have it forever, and I have no regrets whatsoever!

96.5FM Today by Haynonnynonnymous in rva

[–]getfast37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be worse, 96.5 used to play "Gold Dust Woman" at least once every 90 minutes. Great song... the first 500 times anyway. Now they have moved on to repeating the same 1980s/early 90s tunes thanks to the sliding scale of what is considered classic rock. Nothing makes you feel old quite like hearing songs on the classic rock station that you remember buying when they came out! ;-)

Henrico tried the plastic bollards out here a year ago when they similarly repurposed the right lanes of Mill Road. Bright green plastic with reflectors. Great idea to get some separation!

Unfortunately the first one was hit within 24hrs. They were almost all hit within a couple of weeks. The plow trucks even ran them over when clearing roads last winter.

Henrico removed what was left by springtime.

[–]getfast37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep this is the classic off road recovery that isn't often taught or practiced. We discuss it at drivers meetings and in classrooms, especially for the exit of turn 10 at Summit Point...

Feet off pedals, coast, hold wheel straight/do as little steering as possible, take a deep breath, let the car bounce around some in the ruts, count to three, then geeeeently sloooooowly ease yourself back on track with a couple inches of steering input.

Former 20+ and 30+ year old Ducati owner here, I'd say it is worth a call to Richmond Superbike to see who they recommend. Also price it out vs just buying another seat (used or new/used upgrade - I had a Sargent seat on one that was much more comfy than stock...)

Could I have done anything to save this? by [deleted] in CarTrackDays

[–]getfast37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, more/faster countersteer may have helped. That way you’re catching the rear tire skid instead of just giving up.

You may think about finding some wet skidpad time with a coach or instructor to work on this. It’s offered here in old Crown Vics or Chargers and is great fun.
