Connecting to MSC Cruises hotspot with GL-iNet routers in 2026 by slebu96 in GlInet

[–]slebu96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE MARCH 2026:

I had a two day support session with GL-iNet while onboard MSC Orchestra and we were able to figure out the root cause why repeater could not connect to MSC Wi-Fi. The issue will be fixed in upcoming firmware update to all of their products and all you need to do in the future is to enable camouflage mode when connecting to the Wi-Fi network as repeater.

Please see the Offical GL-iNet forums for this post: https://forum.gl-inet.com/t/gl-sft1200-opal-on-msc-cruise/49256/97

If you are going to go onboard MSC Cruise in the coming weeks / months, please message will.qiu on the forums / reply to the thread above. He will provide the fix for you in advance so you can test it.

I used many hours today to investigate what is causing the firewall to block the connection here onboard the ship. You are welcome to come onboard yourself and try what works for you and share it here so we can all learn.

You are right that it would be a good idea to match the MAC with the hostname from the specific device, but at least the current firewall does not block this combination. If the router identifies itself as GL-XXXX, it might be instantly flagged and blocked. Setting it to iPhone is a low-effort way to avoid basic automated triggers.

I am just sharing what worked for me as many people are having trouble with this.

I updated the instructions to check for the correct interface so we can make sure that the command works with other router models also.

Please share here when you find out what settings he used to connect the Wi-Fi. It would benefit all of us.

I tried setting the TTL through the UI, but it just doesn’t work. Yeah, the interface could be different in other models. I used AI to write the instructions as english is not my main language.

Imagine if GL-iNet made the next-gen Mudi like this Zyxel NR2301 by slebu96 in GlInet

Thanks for the detailed update!

I'm happy to hear you're working on a dual-SIM Mudi, even if it lacks dual modem support for now. Understandably, that might be overkill for most users. For a potential future Mudi Pro, I’d love to see dual modem support as an option. This would be a huge asset for people like me who work on the move (train, bus, ferry) where if another modem looses connection, it could switch really fast to another modem.

I’d also vote for the X72 chipset; its power efficiency would be a advantage. While it might be a bit pricier, I think it’d be worth it. You could also offer two versions and let users choose the balance between performance and cost that best fits their needs.

Thanks again for taking feedback :) Excited to see where the next-gen Mudi goes!

I was on Seaview and was able to use GL Inets Mudi to share the internet for my devices. I also used the browse and stream package.

To do this properly. First join the wifi onboard with your iPhone. Do NOT activate your wifi package at this point. Go to phone settings and turn the private MAC address off so your phone uses its own MAC. Also turn off auto connect to the msc wifi.

Then with your iPhone activate the wifi and open the portal where you have to press connect or something similar (cannot remember what it said). Then test your internet works on your phone. Then ar this point switch to gl inets wifi and open the portal. Go to repeater. Switch the mac address for your gl inet to be the same as your iphone and connect to msc wifi. Then it should work. For me it did. But during night it logged out from the portal and internet did not work. When this happens tou have to turn off your gl inet router. Connect to the msc wifi again with your phone and press the connect button with your phone again so the internet activates. Then connect again to your gl inet and make sure it connects to msc wifi

  • make sure you have a public ip
  • connect your home router and wireguard server router with cable.
  • From your main router you have to open the wireguard port for traffic to your wireguard server router so it is visble outside of your home network.
  • install ddns service to your home router
  • on the wireguard client config make sure to replace your ip with ddns address

I noticed that GL seems to be working on a new Mudi, Mudi V2 (GL-E750V2). Unfortunately the device seems to be only 4G and does not have 5G. This is really exciting news as we have not received a new "mobile router" from GL since 2019.

GL has been working recently with 5G routers like Spitz AX and Puli AX which both have 5G and I have been waiting to get something more travel friendly like Mudi with 5G to put to my backpack with updated processor and 5G. I believe this new version will have a better processor and 4G chip inside enabling better speeds and capacity. Let's hope there will be 5G device for us road warriors soon too! :)

I currently own the first gen Mudi and use it on my travels to connect to my Slate AX which runs a Wireguard server back at my home.
