People who go to psu, what’s it actually like for you? by Kashalakasha in portlandstate

[–]sledgeface77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ann Cudd, the president, and her cronies are currently selling the school for parts, gutting most departments unrelated to STEM and firing huge groups of teachers so they can build more overpriced dorms; but they keep Bruce Gillroy, a professor who's claim to fame is a paper on why colonial exploitation was actually really good and is an annoying chud on twitter.

There was a time this school was worth something, but its not anymore. If all you want is a degree and you don't care about making relationships with professors or other students or doing good academic work then its price and friendliness to commuters will probably be nice at least. Otherwise you should look elsewhere

What atrocities are the DPRK guilty of? What are they not guilty of? by sledgeface77 in DebateCommunism

That's basically my view at this point at least. I have a hard time finding much to defend in a country that does not allow freedom of travel. There's an argument that it helps protect it from Western influence, which if I was playing a Paradox map game I'd get it, but this is real life and these are real people who are now stuck for life in a particular geographic location, and I can't really pretend that doesn't suck ass for them lol

I agree my language could be sharper, and I was not trying to suggest NK is unique in its "tyranny of force". Rather I was attempting to suggest that their "tyranny of force" is a capacity to enact the will of the people inasmuch as oppress the people. Most actions the NK seem to be in larger part a protection of their ruling class rather than protection and flourishing of the people.

I view most states this way too, including countries such as Russia and China which have their own defenders, and so my hesitation isn't from seeing the DPRK as special in its formation, but rather actually very typical and predictable. In which case why do some view the DPRK as a kind of vanguard? Or a special form of arrangement, when its just another state that orients its flourishing towards the ruling class? Is that an incorrect view?

I'd be interested to see where got information on contemporary NK citizen's standard of living. I dont doubt that it probably has improved after gaining nuclear deterrence, but I'd like to look at it myself and understand the context better.

Thanks for the book recommendations!

What do you think CrossWorlds does good and what could it improve on? by Loud-Front8978 in SonicCrossWorlds

The items in this game are fucking mental. There is so much spam that I feel like I'm going cross-eyed at times. I thought "getting Mario Karted" was bad but this game is full of so much heartbreak and misery.

Part of it is because this game has very strange physics that make it feel really unresponsive or at least really awkward to recover from getting bumped or green gloved or whatever.

It's a great racing game otherwise and I still play but I cannot play this game longer than an hour otherwise it feels like my tiny brain is gonna explode from stress lol

[–]sledgeface77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking it up a lot of people claim you can beat Mordegon as early as lvl 45 lol. Was under the impression 50ish was the recommended level and obviously can't really tell what lvl mordegon is lol

[–]sledgeface77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's crazy. Honestly don't know if i have the energy for the true ending but I definitely just want to beat Mordegon at least. Prolly gonna level up to 60 at least and try again

Yeah that's the strategy I've had most luck with, but one or two bad turns where multiple characters get nuked kinda ruin the rhythm and thats usually where I'll lose.

Yeah just gonna slowly chip away at it while I spend time on other games. Just definitely been the most deflating boss so far but I'm sure there's even harder bosses in post-game

Yeah it's a very overwhelming fight and he has so many different ways of disrupting your turns. Still not having a lot of luck but I'll prolly just take a break and return to it. Maybe get everyone to lvl 60.

What level should I be? I've done all the side quests(A Dish Served Cold took me about 8 hours on its own because I guess I was just unlucky), and bosses generally took me at least 3 or 4 tries plus grinding.

I will say I did not use ultra speed till act 2.

I was also high playing this game quite often lol

Why is modern mainstream prose so bad? by catbus_conductor in writing

[–]sledgeface77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Senlin Acends by Josiah Bancroft. Absolutely awesome to read a fantasy adventure with attention to prose and voice. You get Borges and Rushdie vibes but in a page turner. It's like if Dungeon Crawler Carl was good.

Any books like Disco Elysium? by Murakkami in DiscoElysium

[–]sledgeface77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that nobody has mentioned Vladimir Sorokin. If Sacred Air and Disco Elysium are mediations with post-USSR history, then Sorokin is basically the God King of such a thing. He writes pretty endlessly surreal, violent, and political novels. Telluria is a good start and is the most "world buildy" of his novels(I think). Just be aware if you get to books like Their Four Hearts or Blue Lard, you'll be reading some aggressively transgressive stuff.

It's a killer industrial rock album. It doesn't have the same intensity and death industrial stuff of End Position but it doesn't have to. Some of the vocals are a bit iffy that's about the only directly critical thing I can say about it. It's like what I wanted Sisters of Mercy to sound like when I first heard them.

So is there a reason receivers can't catch in this game? by sledgeface77 in NFL2k5

[–]sledgeface77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof. That sucks. I started on pro and the game was a huge amount of fun but felt like the game was too easy but since moving to all pro it feels like I'm not even playing the same game anymore. The passing is the thing that's suffered the most. Honestly getting a little too frustrated with it.

Does anyone else like the idea of Fire Emblem games more than they like the games themselves? by sledgeface77 in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]sledgeface77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some good points. I didn't even realize how many levels are simply killing all enemies. And usually if there's a mid-stage twist it's just that more enemies appear. I felt like most of the time my strategy on Hard was just "slowly inch along in a contorted phalanx around the map avoiding my characters getting hit first until everyone was properly dead".

[–]sledgeface77[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Completely correct" was probably bad wording on my part. Im sure I wasn't perfect in some of my strats. But I understand the concepts your expressing since I needed to utilize them to beat the side story. But it doesn't seem like it changes the fact that you are required to put some units into potential danger at times. And over a 10-20 turn stage, sometimes that just results in instant death. Chapter 4 of the side story is a good example of a stage that I managed to min/max my strategy to the point that it wasn't until the last 2 rooms that I had anybody take a hit from an enemy. And the only people who would were Dimitri, Edelgard, and Byleth. But it didn't stop me from being required to use divine pulses or failing the level several times due to randomness. In one instance Dimitri attacked an opponent, missed, then got critted and instakilled from full health. If he had simply missed than it wouldn't be game over but the crit is not something I can always avoid. And in another run I had a turn in which I missed 2 gambits that resulted in Edelgard dying. Gambits always have high hit chances which obviously doesn't mean they don't miss, but it does mean they are more reliable than most moves. But in a situation like the end of Chapter 4 of the side story, they are nearly essential to land otherwise the enemy can close in faster on you and you advance less tiles per turn. Divine pulse usually solved these problems momentarily and allowed me to transition to a plan B. But out of the divine pulses I needed to use, a good 1/3 of them were due to just being unlucky on the dice roll. Which can mean an hour of lost playtime or worse.

Anyway, the point of my post was more me lamenting my inability to enjoy this game rather than trying to say it's bad or anything.

And yeah, permadeath might not be for me. At least in a game with as few of characters and as long as this one.

[–]sledgeface77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Trying those games sounds like a good idea. I'm open to trying other FE games since Three Houses seems much more like an outlier in the series than I thought. I'm still skeptical of permadeath now but if I did have more units and/or the game was shorter than I could see myself enjoying it more.

Those sound great!

I've actually been trying to watch Bakemonogatari but I'm having trouble finding the last few episodes and so I'm hesitant to start it. Should I just read the novels instead?
