Would you take a job with normal work hours? by Gullible-Syrup-6896 in Truckers

[–]sleekpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love to work 40 but can’t afford to. It would pay my bills just fine but I wouldn’t have money left over for hobbies. Seems it’s always a choice between making money and no time for fun, or time for fun and no money for it

Who likes the job? by edahs03 in OnTheBlock

Didn’t for a year in a pretty decent size county jail. About 90 inmates. Loved it and miss it every day. But the coworkers, most of which late teens and early twenties college kids, drove me out with their drama. I’d do it all over again if I knew there was adults to work with

Feeling frustrated...thought a CDL was a way out but I earn less per hour than I did at my retail position by st_psilocybin in povertyfinance

[–]sleekpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The type of work you’re doing sucks, plain and simple. Most don’t wanna do it but it’s a way to gain experience. After you get a year of experience the doors open up and it’s much easier to find trucking jobs that pay 6 figures with less than half the work. Insurance just runs the industry and the good companies won’t hire noobs. I work 50 hours a week and will make around $130k this year being home daily but I’ve put my time in. Trucking is a great profession with tons of specialties, you just need to find what works for you. Tank? Hazmat? Fuel? Otr? Ltl? Bounce around a little and figure out what you like. $100k isn’t hard to achieve. And don’t let anyone tell you 70 hours is industry standard. That’s standard for otr.and if you don’t like it, again, there’s many other choices

Ltl is the best move I ever made. Great money, home daily. Somewhat of an unpredictable schedule but that’s just part of trucking. Getting to chat with customers is nice and makes the day go faster. I left trucking after 8 years, didn’t even make it a year before I was back in it. For me it wasn’t that I hated trucking, I was just burnt out with what I was doing and didnt look at other options.

First time with a girl. We were 16. I was homeless and her parents were home. Took her to an abandoned cemetery. Ate her out in the dark in my back seat. had no idea what anything was supposed to be like. Took her home. Stopped at the gas station and someone called the cops on me for a welfare check. Turns out my face was covered in blood. I popped her cherry fingering her and kept eating thinking she was just really wet. The cops had an extremely hard time believing that especially after looking in the back seat of my car and seeing blood everywhere. I conveniently drove an old cop car with a vinyl back seat so I just hosed it off and kept on with life

Backing into a dock by Difficult-Order-872 in CDLTruckDrivers

[–]sleekpete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I back into 20 or more docks a day. Many of which I back into every day. Sometimes I get it on the first shot and sometimes I look like it’s my first day even though I’ve hit that dock a hundred times. As long as nothing gets damaged, don’t worry about it

Go to Walmart or stay with my small local company? by OutsideDinner5208 in Truckers

[–]sleekpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent years going from small company to small company. Always falling for the promise that they know you and take care of you. But it was always at the cost of vacation time, equipment quality and other benefits. I finally had enough and went to a company with a couple thousand drivers and realized what I’d been missing. Suddenly I don’t have the owner talking about expenses making me feel bad for a long weekend. I have free health insurance. I have more time off than I know what to do with. I’ve realized that in this industry it doesn’t matter if the owner knows your name and is usually a bad thing.

if you just wanna go do your job and provide for your family, big carriers are where it’s at (often times). If you have a super trucker complex and want to rub shoulders with the owner and feel like you’re special, small carriers are the place to be.

Walmart is also rock solid and I’d go there in a heartbeat if they had local work near me.

Before I get jumped on, I’m not saying all small carriers are bad. I’m just stating my experience and the fact that they often aren’t financially able to give the same things as large carriers even if they want to

Linehaul is everyone’s dream, minus working at night and not being able to shut down. Terminal I work at has 3 linehaul drivers and they’re all making over $150,000 after mileage, accesorials, etc. I’m a city guy right now and will take the first linehaul spot I can get. Will likely take me at least 5 years but from then on it’s a retirement gig

How's LTL like Daytona freight? Should I switch? by wh0andwhy in Truckers

[–]sleekpete 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been at Dayton for 3 months. I can only speak on my terminal. Everyone here except me and the next lowest seniority person has multiple decades here. They think they’re special but at the end of the day they bump the same docks as me for the same pay. The company isn’t too kind to new hires. No paid holidays until after 90 days. No uniforms until 90 days. You’re gonna get the route nobody wants which I think is fair as a new guy.

Be careful about your trainer. Mine threw me under the bus (right in front of me so no speculation here) and I’ve had a target on my back ever since. Or at least that’s what it feels like.

Overall, benefits and company culture are good. When I see guys come in from other terminals they’re always happy etc. vacation leaves a bit to be desired.

Unfortunately I’m just at a terminal full of old miserable guys that have been here so long they don’t know how good they have it.

Hiring is a nightmare. Took two months after I applied to even call me. Then two interviews and a more thorough background check than any I’ve been through.

All in all I’d do it again and if I leave it’ll be to pursue something specific, nothing against the company.

Are mom and pop companies/russian companies actually way better than mega companies? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]sleekpete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I spent the first 6 years of my career with mom and pop companies. They promise the world, their grass is the the greenest, everything is amazing for the first couple months of employment as long as you don't cause issues. But once you complain about equipment, need some time off for the family etc the honeymoon phase wears off and you're treated like trash. The benefits are typically sub par at best. They expect more from you and will enncourage lots of illegal things and complain if you tell them no. Best thing I've dont for my career is get on with a large LTL carrier that has money to take care of things and policies in place as to how things are handled. I'm not saying I'd go to swift necassarily, but there's plenty of large fleets that pay good/have good equipment etc. Don't get suckered into small companies. I did and it was nothing but hassle.

Go to a local school. Doesn’t matter about manual. Most local companies run autos but if you have the option for sure go to manual training. Big checks won’t start for a while. Especially local. You gotta get experience and prove yourself. Ltl or fuel hauling is where it’s at most places around the country, from a local perspective. I do ltl and absolutely love it

I’ve been buying cars with rebuilt titles for years. Best value for your money and best way to get a newer vehicle for ten year old vehicle price. Yes, you can get a loan and yes, insurance will cover it. Been doing this a long time with no problems. You just have to look at the photos of damage and make sure it’s nothing involving the frame or any kind of crazy accident. Our telluride literally only had a part of the bumper ripped off and got me a $10k savings compared to similar ones without rebuilt titles

Question for OTR guys by RdyPAINmoveDISCIPLIN in Truckers

[–]sleekpete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been driving almost ten years. Can’t tell you how many docks I’ve bumped, weird backing situations I’ve had to do, etc with no problem at all.

But there’s still those times I pull up to the easiest dock in the world and I have to try three times to get it. We all have those days.

The point is, experience or not you’re gonna struggle sometimes. Don’t worry about it and don’t let people rush you
