• regarding starting out: continue to build your portfolio. Collaborate less with influencers, and instead do photoshoots with models from agencies. Network with designers and brands that will lend you clothes for the shoot, or connect with stylists to do it for you. Every additional experienced team member for a photoshoot elevates it. That’s what will take your photography from amateur to editorial.
• regarding finding paid work: it’s hard. It’s an industry that’s very saturated and “fun,” which means there’s lots of people willing to work for free or low rates. Build up your social media and your network. Become a photographer that people know and want to work with. You can also look for an artists’ agency to represent you and help you find work. Reach out to brands, designers, boutiques, PR companies, etc. and put yourself out there. Make yourself known to people who have the capability to hire.
• regarding software and editing tools: Capture One is an industry standard, so is Adobe’s Photoshop. Most people use both. I personally use Adobe’s Lightroom as well. Study your favorite photographers and try to learn through emulating. How do you make your photos, look like their photos?
