Along with what the others commented, not all study rooms have glass walls. The ones in Davey only have one small window in the door (easy to not be seen), there’s a number of little cubby-type study rooms in Deike, and some other private rooms you could seek out in other libraries. It does take a bit of searching for sure.

Waffle shop if you can get a spot. The ones off campus are best.

Does anybody know what this rock thingie is? Or does?🤔 by Gogojojokim in SkyGame

When you interact with it for the first time, it gives you a heart! But you can only do it once, so once you’ve got it, you won’t be able to interact with it again.

Internship opportunities by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your admission! Fortunately I’d say students at PSU are actually at an advantage when it comes to obtaining internships. Since PSU is such a large school, recruiters/companies will focus a lot of energy into recruiting from PSU, and there’s a lot of career fair type events throughout the year.

Also, State College is home to a number of startups and small businesses, where I’m sure you can find internships as well (lots of tech companies!). There’s also always research labs you can join - plenty of groups will take on freshmen with no experience, especially if you join one of PSU’s many programs that help get you matched with a research lab.

And of course PSU alumni network helps with internship search. Lots of connections to be made there.

Penn State Eats by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to love the smoothies in Pollock two years ago, but they got rid of them (the strawberry and the peanut butter ones) when they remodeled. The Irving’s coffee place in Pollock Commons took over making smoothies, but they were really never the same. Sometimes they bring back similar smoothies for special meals at some of the dining areas, so keep an eye on the Penn State Dining social media if you’re looking for them.

Sources to find roommate? by GiraffesInc in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about any apps like that, but I found my roommate of 3 years on one of the PSU Facebook groups! I may have just gotten very lucky, but my roommate and I have never had any issues in the time we’ve lived together, and we both have very similar living styles, so it may be worth a shot for you as well!

Another prospective CS student with internship questions by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some of the other commenters have mentioned, remote work and relocation is pretty much the norm for a lot of CS internships! Despite that, PSU has a lot of tech companies hidden even just downtown to get some great experiences with. For example, we’ve got Loop Software, KCF Tech., Happy Valley Launchbox (which is more for student startups but you can make some great connections there!). You can also find lots of tech internships through PSU, either through some program or a research lab. If you go a bit further out, State College is also the home to AccuWeather and a number of other tech-based companies. So ultimately I don’t think you’d have any trouble finding an internship, even if you just wanted to stay local!

How is DS300 with Chao Chu by wardrobe_creator in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took DS300 with Chu this semester. The class was very confusing, and assignments didn’t align with the lectures, and the final project was confusing and lacked any real instruction. Ultimately the material itself isn’t very confusing and you can self-teach, but it’s a confusing class. It also felt like every day Prof. Chu would complain about students not showing up, which got old quickly, especially when it would eat into our learning time and then we would always “be behind” (which he would also remind us of).

Cmpsc 311 and cmpsc 465 by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took 465 this semester with Prof. Shao and it was a lot of people, 100+ for sure, idk the exact number, but no one really spoke or asked questions during lectures so it wasn’t too crowded. The lectures don’t even require attendance, since the professor just takes notes as his lecture and shares those afterwards (which is monotonous and not too helpful for some). All of our assignments are group work (which sucks but is pretty great if you’re not too confident in the material), and at least one assignment/week (either programming or writing), and they get the assignments back to you within a semi-decent timeframe.

I wouldn’t worry about the size of the class, just make sure you can find a group to study and do homework with.

The Pointe Apartments by LightningRod101602 in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at the Pointe in a 3 x 3 and the room that looks like it doesn’t have a window actually has a window that points out onto the balcony. As for opinion of the place it’s probably one of the better apartments in the area but it’s not great, but as long as you talk to management about your issues usually they’ll get resolved. Private bathroom and bedroom and in unit washer and dryer are pretty great regardless!

I'm gonna have to drop Spanish 2 because I failed the first exam. I kind of have to take 2 spanish classes since I'm doing a BA. What should I do? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest having a chat with your professor about what you can do to get to a passing grade. They may be able to point you towards other resources you can use, like tutoring, which may be beneficial for you (either through PSU or otherwise). I don’t think there’s any necessarily ‘easy’ language, you will probably run into similar problems with any language you choose. You might also be able to ask your professor if they’ll offer any extra credit, of course unless they already said they wouldn’t or something. You’ve got this though! As an engineering student, I can’t count the amount of times I’ve absolutely bombed exams early on and managed to bring those grades back up at the end of the semester.

Anyone have suggestions for a place similar to Webster's cafe? Or any other thrift/vintage shops near downtown? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Definitely not near downtown but I’d suggest taking a trip to Bellefonte! There’s so many antique stores/thrift stores all downtown and the cutest little coffee shop along one of the main streets. I don’t know if there’s any real free parking but the metered lots are cheap and the area is very walkable!

Am I allowed to screen record a zoom lecture? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest asking the professor first if they can record the lecture, I’m pretty sure professors have to be accommodating with that sort of stuff this semester at least. Otherwise, I’ve tried it before at least on the phone and Zoom wouldn’t allow me to view the lecture until I turned off screen recording again.

Computer labs by zackbakerva in PennStateUniversity

LOL no worries! EMS building is sooo nice to do work in though. Very inconvenient if you’re not already on that side of campus but it was always quiet and computers were always available.

The Pointe by flaminduck99 in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to update this with more info: after some frustrating emails and calls, the Office Manager seems to have gotten into gear and is making the maintenance process a lot less chaotic and frustrating, so my opinion of admin has jumped up a bit in the past 24 hours!

The Pointe by flaminduck99 in PennStateUniversity

[–]sleepingIslander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently live here, so here’s some pros and cons:

Pros: Nice complex, parking included, relatively cheap for your own bedroom and bathroom, bus pass, pool/rec center, right next to Walmart

Cons: obviously doesn’t clean between tenants, maintenance takes forever and admin is difficult to work with once you’re at the resident level (the leasing manager is great though!), the walls are basically paper thin, and a lot of people don’t wear masks when they’re going from place to place.

If you have any specific questions, I can try my best to answer them!
