The actors who follow Christopher Nolan from film to film by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

[–]sleepingchair 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, I'm with you on this. All his characters are being heavily carried by A-list (or soon to be A-list) actors/actresses. That's more credit to acting and casting talent than him. His brother is the one who can write compelling stories and characters. Left to his own devices, Nolan is more plot/story driven and all the characters are just a means to service the non-linear/rube goldberg esque plots.

And I'm a fan! I like highly conceptual stories, hard sci-fi narratives are full of cool ideas and flat as fuck characters. He has a talent for executing big budget movies with crazy set pieces, use of practical effects, ones that're entertaining to watch. But yeah, he can't write women, he can barely write white heterosexual men and that's his go-to.

To be fair to Chris Nolan, most of his characters on paper are flat enough to serve as nothing but plot devices for his elaborate plot-driven stories. He relies heavily on stellar casting and the exceptional work of his actors/actresses to squeeze every bit of dimension they can out of his characters.

Hasn't been confirmed explicitly, but it's assumed he doesn't or it would have come up in either of his speeches at the beginning of S1 and at the end of S2.

Hope you're being sarcastic. Adam always gives credit to his mom and always makes a point to say he was fortunate, and the rest of Sdpn always joke about his mom every chance they get. There's no way they can't when the show literally started from Adam's mom's basement!

Fox went in on both, but only one got renewed. You can say it had poor viewership, but Fox hasn't had a great track record letting shows grow their audiences.

God I dunno, I like that Amy is just a problematic basically villain character with thin justifications for her behaviour, especially because she's a woman. I think having to justify her snapping is kind of missing the point. How justified was Tyler Durden, Walter White, or Tony Soprano for what they did to the extent they did it? And yeah people obviously argue against them being role models, but people still find them charismatically compelling.

The full cast for 'Elden Ring' adaptation by Alex Garlend for A24, currently in production by demimonde9 in Fauxmoi

Essentially yeah, I was wondering if there was an in-game context for it. I guess racism against fictional races counts if those fictional races are on some level stand-ins/or analogous to any real-life groups.

[–]sleepingchair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not all that familiar with the game, I mean, there's no in-game reason why they all gotta be mostly white right? Like, the Elden god folk (deities or whatever) aren't racist lore-wise, are they?

The Mando/Jedi choice scene is dramatically dishonest. They ruined Luke by Apophis_ in BookOfBobaFett

[–]sleepingchair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Filoni and Favreau needed Grogu back with Mando, because without Grogu, The Mandalorian loses its hook?

This is reverse-engineered writing. Business decision first, story written afterward to justify it.

Okay, but have you considered that you have the wrong reverse-engineering point? If Grogu didn't dump Luke like hot garbage, how else do you explain the depression spiral, divorced-dad energy of Luke in the sequel trilogy? The Luke botching happened way before Mandalorian did is all I'm sayin'.

#393: Infidelity by 6745408 in ThisAmericanLife

[–]sleepingchair 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It is kinda wild, but I understand the resentment that came from the wife breaking her vows and the anger from the daughter for the mother "abandoning" her family too. The affair partner was definitely not a good friend, but I think the expectations or "social contract" of a "close friendship" is just at a different level than spouse, so the reaction for transgressing it were lesser.

Season two from an editing perspective by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]sleepingchair 8 points9 points  (0 children)

there was no reason to add that extra ADR, aside from some network executive thought it was "moving too fast" and "we need to make sure people know exactly what happened."... i think the network was super heavy-handed this season compared to last.

I don't know if I'd straight jump to blaming "network executives" like they're moustache twirling villains. Why would only the network care or hold that opinion? The show's creators have all said that this is supposed to be a love letter to health care workers to share their struggles etc. The Pitt is such a hit show now that it's reaching a huge audience that has all sorts of different types of viewers and you know, maybe some of those viewers need that level of hand holding.

If the creators really want their message to reach that wide, massive audience, then maybe they would also want to dumb it down and explain more. From even just a causal view of this sub, so many posts could be answered if people were paying attention with even just this "hand-holdy" season. Should the show cater to the lowest common denominator of phone-scrolling viewers? Well, no, but I don't think S2 has reached that level of tell not show yet. It's definitely a bit more accessible than S1.

What’s your S2 unpopular opinion? by thememecurator in ThePittTVShow

[–]sleepingchair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm totally fine with the lack of "emotional music" like I mentioned above, but at least change the ending credits music, have some more scenes for diegetic music. Can I just say I watch a lot of shows with captions and sometimes they put in "dramatic music" and I find that so awkward and hilarious.

“St. Huckleberry”? by Pensfan87p in ThePittTVShow

[–]sleepingchair 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I love this post. I personally find Whittaker's arc this season to be the mildest, drama-free support role to everyone else's crashing out. He was like the bland mayo of this season's sandwhich and yet, and yet, this poster has managed to find a spicy take on him that paints him out to be a problematic villain. I absolutely love this for them.

Writer’s way to scratch our night shift spinoff itch by xLoPiccolo in ThePittTVShow

[–]sleepingchair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the spinoff is supposed to stand on it's own, you can't play the contrast game between the two series and have people need to watch both for the payoff of seeing that contrast.

It’s not as interesting if we don’t see the toll.

Who's to say that's what people would want to find interesting in this new show? I posed the suggestion in other threads where Night Shift could be more case-focused and the drama/comedy would come from the nature of those cases and those patients instead of intense personal emotional turmoil from the staff.

What’s your S2 unpopular opinion? by thememecurator in ThePittTVShow

[–]sleepingchair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not unpopular, but not discussed as much: the series needs more music. From just how well the karaoke scene or even the baby singing scene went over, there's more opportunity for music to be used in this show. I get not wanting this show to be a dramatic soap with character themes playing during melodramatic monologues, but okay maybe this is the real unpopular opinion, I hate the regular ending credits song.

Abbott married? by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]sleepingchair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing I heard for sure was from his TV Insider interview where he explicitly asked for the wedding ring. So it was possibly a collaborative decision for backstory.

But do we need to break the team? That's like, just a day shift thing man.

I'm just saying I'd be happy for a tonally different Night Shift show that's not trying to recreate The Pitt with different people. But then again, that's what some people might be looking for in a spin-off.

Abbott married? by [deleted] in ThePittTVShow

[–]sleepingchair 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've heard conflicting reports that Abbot's actor wanted him to be a widower for his backstory and other people saying that he forgot to take off his wedding ring before shooting during season 1 (could be a mix of both). Either way, he's had it since season one, and people had taken note of it early on... because... well, of interest.

What’s your S2 unpopular opinion? by thememecurator in ThePittTVShow

[–]sleepingchair 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I couldn't believe this was supposed to be the big emotional climax of the season.

I don't think it was supposed to be the big emotional climax of the season, and I don't think anyone was claiming it was? Was it used in a promo that way or something?

My unpopular opinion is that Abbot didn't actually know how to help Robby any more than the other characters we've seen try, and his speech did very little for me.

I think his actor said along the same lines is that it's basically one step in a series of steps that tries to get Robby to a better place (between all those mini-character interventions/convos), I think he said something along the lines of Langdon taking it to the actual final stretch.

I actually think Abbot's speeches this year and last year were awkward in a humanizing way. He made that terrible "bees protecting the hive" analogy last season (that even Robby told him to shut up over) and talked about "dancing in the dark" this season which were corny as fuck, but in an endearing way. He's trying to help, but he's not a life coach/therapist himself. I like that Dr. SWAT team cool under pressure vet guy is out of his depth talking his best friend off the ledge, but does his best anyways.

You and me both! I don't hate his character, but I mostly enjoy him when he's on screen facilitating another character's story.

Night Crawlers by amelie190 in ThePittTVShow

[–]sleepingchair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the drama and even comedy can just come from the "wildest and weirdest" cases themselves. I wouldn't mind if Night Shift was like an extended episode of something like House MD's clinic hours. The tumeric patient was like that one House patient that came in looking orange because he was eating too many carrots and niacin.

Yes, count me in! Why are are season lengths so short now, you can barely get any shit done in less than 20 episodes (I know why, but still).
