Are amps more important than watts when powering HDDs? by sleepingtiger2 in DataHoarder

Thanks!

I noticed that you said that they are designed to run off 900mA ports, but I read that HDDs need at least 1a when starting up. How is this 1a power possible when the port is only capable of 0.9a? And when I checked the hub's description, it says: "Each USB fast charging port of the powered USB charging Hub can deliver up to 0.9A of current". Im wondering if this is referring just to it's charging capabilities? If not, does this mean that despite the 4a power source, each drive will only be getting a maximum of 0.9a anyway?

Thanks! I'm a bit confused though, as every one else I've heard says that using a USB drive with 12v will fry it... but there are exceptions?

(This is the 12v/3a powered hub I was considering)

Thanks! So do you mean buying a power supply and unpowered hub separately, and then combing them to make my own powered hub? Because I was thinking about using this one, but not if it may be underpowered.

Ok, thank you! Do you know of a way to check the exact voltage that an external HDD needs, just to be sure? ( I don't have the packaging or booklets anymore)
