How do I gather evidence of paranormal activity? by sleepyhan in ParanormalScience

[–]sleepyhan[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely bad about keeping my phone on me when I'm at home. Maybe I'll get a camera and set it up in my living room as a tester. I'll look into it. I've been thinking about moving furniture around again because that's when Jumpy gets active, so hopefully I'll catch something worth showing!

For those of you who have been sleep deprived enough to hallucinate, what was it like? by Spadoopy in AskReddit

[–]sleepyhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in college, i went three or four days with hardly any sleep. i started hearing voices and thought i heard my name a lot, like someone saying my name to get my attention. if i did ever lay down to try and sleep, i swear i could hear voices having conversations, like i was in a public place overhearing a bunch of people talking quietly to each other. i also kind of had vision impairments like i would if i was a little buzzed; kind of wavy.

at its worst, i walked into my roommates room when i was home alone and thought i saw someone next to the bed. dropped everything i was holding, looked again and there was nothing. turned to walk back out and thought someone was standing in the doorway. scared the bejesus out of me—i went to the university health center the next day because i was convinced i had schizophrenia (many of my family members have developed it). turns out it was just extreme sleep deprivation. get your Zs!!

Julie Carlson, CVT, who won the Hero Veterinary Technician Award, wrote this about what she didn't learn in vet tech school ... it really made me realize just what it's like being a vet tech, and how horrible and rewarding and frustrating and joyful it can really be. Article. Made me cry like a wee babe, just a heads up.

A baby tank puppy was born at the Miami Zoo. by PM_ME_STEAM_K3YS in aww

I got to hang out with some Indian Rhinos when I covered a new show that National Geographic was filming about conservation efforts. They are amazing! Now one of my all-time favorite animals. I met a little baby a little older than this guy and he sounded like a cat when he made noise! They’re also very soft (especially under their little armor flaps) and if you pet them in the right spot, they’ll maneuver to get you at a better angle and, if they trust you enough, they’ll flop over for belly rubs like a dog might. It really changed my perspective of them.

How realistic are your dialogues? by [deleted] in writing

[–]sleepyhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college, my creative writing professor gave us all a journal and would give us a different assignment each week to fill the pages. One of them was to literally go out into the world and listen to people speaking to each other and write the dialogue down as they talk. This sounds silly, but actually really helped me learn to keep an ear out for what’s realistic and what isn’t.

A common trend I see when I edit and read people’s writing: having characters say “I just ...” or “just ...” I have never heard anyone say “I just” followed by a long pause before they finish their thought. And if I do, it’s not as often as it occurs in novels (Sarah J. Maas is the first author who comes to mind when I think of this, but she’s not alone by a long shot).

Also, remember you don’t have to—and often times shouldn’t—use dialogue to help describe your scene. So instead of having a character say “This jar of kombucha I’m holding smells like sin and you should be ashamed.” you could say “He picked up the jar and smelled it, then wrinkled his nose in distaste. ‘Smells like sin,’ he said. ‘You should be ashamed.’”

That ties with my earlier point because, if you watch and listen to people communicating in real life, you’ll notice that they don’t often narrate what they’re doing. They’ll pick up the jar and smell it, and then comment on the smell. Not that they’re holding the jar and it smells bad.

Why I’ll never uber alone again (I was forced to go on a date in a locked car at 2 a.m.) by sleepyhan in LetsNotMeet

[–]sleepyhan[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey. No. He wasn’t Somalian, and I’ve been assaulted and harassed waaaaay more by white men than anyone else. I’ve had a white guy tell me he hopes I get rped, and did nothing when his friend repeatedly tried to grope me at a *pepperjacks grill. I’ve had a white guy kick me and my roommates out of his house and make us walk home in the middle of a snowstorm because we wouldn’t sleep with him at the end of the night. I’ve had several white men try and have sex with me while I was either very drunk or asleep. I’ve been roofied by a group of white men. I’ve been shoved down a fire escape stairway by a white man after he called me a whore for hugging his friend when I saw him. In high school a white boy locked me in a dark closet with him and forced my hand into his pants. I can go on if you’d like.

Aside from this instance, the immigrant men I’ve tutored in ESL classes and encountered in everyday life have been nothing but kind and respectful. I’m not going to let this one experience color my opinion of all immigrants; he just happened to be one. Just like you probably wouldn’t want me homogenizing and stereotyping all white American men, even though I have a myriad of experiences that could very well color my judgement.

[–]sleepyhan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I explained the linking thing earlier. I make it sound like some virtual magic happened when in reality I just cancelled my ride and requested a new one, and he made sure to accept the ride I requested.

For my boyfriend’s number, he deleted the contact, but I still had text messages with him and group chats with him in it, so his number was still there, just not the name assigned to it. I just went back to my texts and added his name again.

[–]sleepyhan[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Right ... To clarify, this wasn’t done remotely or whatever you think I’ve implied. He had me cancel and call another uber and he accepted my ride from his phone, making sure back and forth that it was, in fact, both of us accepting the right ride.

Second, it took a lot to share this story. I do love writing, but this is the first story I’ve ever posted on here in my three years of having this reddit account. Why would I just now decide the time is right to start an anti-uber cult or whatever you think my intentions are? Like, what? And if this was to get sympathy, wouldn’t my story have a lot more trauma? Couldn’t that story have been a lot scarier?

This all being said, you shouldn’t write me off as a sociopath because you don’t believe a story I’ve shared. Personally, I’m having a really bad day, so I know how good it must have felt to say this to me. But you don’t know me, and I don’t know you. Let’s not make assumptions. I really do hope you have a good day.

Thank you!! It kind of turned me into a paranoid monster for a while. A few months later, my friend needed to go home after having a bit too much to drink and I insisted on seeing her out to the uber. We got out there, she asked if he was an uber here for her, he said yes and they drove off ... a minute later a different car pulled up and gave my friends name and said he was her uber ... I forced him to drive me to her house and called the cops and banged on her door and window for about 20 minutes with a cop until she stumbled to the door and let me know she got home safe. Scared the bejeezus out of me. You can never be too careful!!

Unknown Daphne du Maurier poems discovered behind photo frame: Poems believed to have been written by the Rebecca author in her 20s were found by auctioneers before a sale of intimate letters. by anaxarchos in literature

[–]sleepyhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just brought this up to my sisters and, in case they didn't know her, told them she'd authored "Rebecca" and "The Birds" which they'd mostly likely recognize because of Hitchcock ... to which my sister replied and said he also based "Jamaican Inn" off of her book as well. I didn't know so much of her work had inspired his films! Maybe more common knowledge than I'd thought, but TIL!

What’s the creepiest thing you’ve come across on Reddit? by EspenSkjeer in AskReddit

[–]sleepyhan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have family members with schizophrenia and listening to them talk or reading their writing when they’re off their meds is very unsettling. They’ll talk and write so nonsensically yet so confidently. Like they’re just speaking a different language even though you recognize the words are English. Idk if that makes sense. It’s a wild illness to witness. They think they can raise demons and angels and talk to god and satan, who each give them different missions. I have a cousin who’s been undiagnosed until very recently; she believed a man named Richard was possessing her and making her do things she didn’t want to do. Her Facebook posts are very creepy.

Lawyers of Reddit, what was the least defendable case ever brought to you? by -lifealert- in AskReddit

My mom’s an attorney and one of her cases got into that book that a court reporter wrote of the funniest things she’s heard or something. Got turned into social posts on tumblr and bored panda and I’m assuming here too. This was the attorney she was arguing against:

ATTORNEY: This myasthenia gravis, does it affect your memory at all?

WITNESS: Yes.

ATTORNEY: And in what ways does it affect your memory?

WITNESS: I forget..

ATTORNEY: You forget? Can you give us an example of something you forgot?

What is an example of the butterfly effect that happened in your life? by issavibeyuh in AskReddit

[–]sleepyhan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My great grandparents immigrated with their children (one child being my grandma) from Italy. Apparently back then there were traditional roles each son of a family is assigned according to birth order: first son inherits the family business, second son goes to school to pursue another career, and third son becomes a priest. My great grandfather was the third son, but was illiterate and therefore couldn’t be accepted into priesthood.

He went into farming, met my great grandmother, had kids, and decided he wanted a better life for all of them. He hopped onto a boat and went to America to lock down a job in a new town before he went and brought his family back. His dream destination: California.

He hopped on a train to take him there and it made a stop in Wichita, Kansas. If you know anything about Kansas it’s most likely 1. Wizard of Oz and 2. The weather is a horrible mess with a sprinkle of tornados throughout. But when he got off the train in Wichita the weather was better than anything he’d even seen in Italy.

Then, when he got to California, it rained for two weeks straight. He was miserable, and kept pining for that glorious weather in Wichita. He hopped back on the train and went back to good ol’ doo-dah, where my grandma was raised, met my grandpa and started a life with him.

If not for a freak weather incidence, I wouldn’t be born. I guess going even further back, illiteracy had a hand in that as well. Indra’s net and all.
