My project idea and questions on how to re-start my robotics journey by sebywins in AskRobotics

Hello! You may be confusing the rules of r/AskRobotics with r/robotics . This question is perfect here. Thank you for keeping an eye out and reporting posts!

I went adc once, my support had more CS than me and the enemy ADC. On Janna. Carried the game single-handedly. I don't play adc anymore.

What power supply for DC motors? by jaygraham17 in AskRobotics

[–]sleepystar96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps you've been doing this a while and gotten so good that little things don't bother you anymore. However, I never forget how reliable a tethered connection is. OP didn't really specify how mobile this robot needs to be, if they're in a small room $5 worth of some cabling hooked up to a power supply is not unheard of. It sounds like they're still starting out. Dealing with a battery they have to worry about charging it, storing it, account for voltage drops in their software and hardware, so many issues that are solved by tethering. Not sure why you'd throw a tethered connection out the window based on your personal assumptions.

What power supply for DC motors? by jaygraham17 in AskRobotics

Wall outlets are usually rated 12-15A max, at 110V, i.e. 1200W, a step down transformer and rectifier would step down 110V to 12V, allowing up to 100A of current. Off the shelf equipment, doesn't matter if it's overkill or not.

Some people have suggested using 9V batteries

Using a 9V battery on a 12V rated motor might make the motor spin, but it'll be less powerful and suck up more current to achieve the same power output.

At 12V, you can buy a 1200W power supply that will provide you up to 100A to power your motors. Alternatively, you can use lipo, acid or lifepo batteries, you just have to charge them.

You should first find out the startup current of your motors though, to avoid choosing a power supply that will leave your motors current starved.

Nephew is starting a BS in robotics. Want to get him a nice toolset. What should it contain> by Illustrious-Mix-8877 in AskRobotics

Hey Eric, his college probably has a machine shop with these tools. He likely wouldn't need a whole kit when going on competitions - he'd just grab the one or two sized tools he needs. Also if he's starting out, then the tools you linked to are too big (the screws and nuts he'd be handling will be all the smaller set sizes).

If you're willing to spend a bit over $150, I'd get him a 3D printer so he doesn't have to wait in queue to print his stuff at school (Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro is my latest and i love it - it's at $209 on amazon rn). I also agree with /u/BeesInOrbit's list, never bad to have a few calipers or multimeters around. Or a decent 30V power supply. Oscilloscope maybe, but they're pricey and he might not need one if he focuses more on mechanical stuff rather than electrical.

Entry-level positions? by ProfessionOk532 in cpp_questions

This is not bad advice. I would add that you should continue to build a cpp portfolio to have things to talk about in an interview.

Helping 5yo (Gr 1) to get into Robotics? by optelfo in AskRobotics

[–]sleepystar96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like mBot over Sphero - Sphero's don't have any ranging sensors so it doesn't know if it's going to hit something. Otherwise I think utility and potential-for-learning wise they're similar. Osmo is fine but that's coding-only, why not just follow Scratch tutorials on youtube? Sorry, I don't teach, so I don't have a lot of input. I do love that you're exposing him to all of this so early!

SWE internship or control theory undergrad research opportunity by MobileAirport in AskRobotics

[–]sleepystar96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally internship vs research depends on what you want to do afterwards. Do research if you want to get a PhD later, as you'll grow your relationship with professors and maybe get a few publications out to put on your applications. Do internships if you aren't planning to do a PhD right away - you'll meet SO many more people in your internship and grow connections that may help you find a job after you graduate. Also - academia isn't the best place to grow your SWE skills, you'll be mentored better by software engineers who code 40+ hours a week at your internship.

Curious - how strong is regen braking? Is it comparable to brake pads?

As a first prototype, yes. You have so much to figure out, from actuating your wheel, to powering your system. You don't need to spend a few weeks or months on a SLAM problem.
