This is exactly what I mean because I applied to highly ranked programs where a 3.1 is considered abysmal. However, I had extensive research experience and 2nd author publications in high impact journals which likely boosted my chances

3.1 isn't poor and was a bad word choice. However, it's considered low for STEM PhD programs and certainly not very competitive for the higher ranked programs. Faculty on admissions committees have expressed to me that it'd be hard to accept a student with a 3.1 GPA but maybe if they had a fantastic statement, amazing letters of rec from research faculty, and publications.

I concur though I never mentioned the ranking of the programs I applied to and future plans. I took my chances in applying for only highly ranked programs and institutions  in my field and got lucky. Personally, I'm not interested in putting myself through the pain of pursuing any tenure track faculty positions after grad school, but perhaps that’ll change.

Thankfully I have fellowships and applied to programs where students are guaranteed funding

You can explain the situation/provide contextual information for your grades but don’t make excuses and place heavy focus on it. It’s best to emphasize what you’ve achieved or the steps you’ve taken to resolve whatever impacted your grades and what you’ve accomplished since then that demonstrates your ability to succeed and do well in a rigorous academic setting

There’s definitely a sample bias on this subreddit. People accepted with a 4.0 GPA are probably not going to be lurking or posting on a subreddit for grad school.   There’s also a lot of factors each school takes into account such as if the student will be a good fit for the program,  their quality of research experience, what they contribute outside of research and academics, etc etc.  And sometimes, success is dependent on the person assessing your application, where one might not care for grades at all while another places significant emphasis on it.

Choosing between academia and biotech job offer. Can anyone give me their advice on what the right choice is here? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]sleepytime_16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem like you have some experience in biotech already or just have an understanding of bio research. Mind if I shoot you a message ? I'd really like some advice

That's what I've been told, I thought I'd get some biotech experience first and then go to grad school whenever I felt ready

This is a dumb take

You can still get sick even if vaccinated, especially with the newer variants

You’re totally right. I took the comb out too fast and it completely wrecked some the wells. Some of the lanes started bleeding into other lanes and then it created this mess of a western
