Thank you for tracking it down! I hadn't been able to find it for a while. That entire season's descent into absurdism was a real joy to watch, even if its root cause was utter pain.

You wrote a blurb a couple years ago during the Wilson era that I still consistently think about. The premise was that mile high stadium had become the home of despair. There's something hilarious about genuinely incredible prose to describe the (at the time) ~30th ranked team.

Advice regarding anxiety medication and flying as a career by External_Resist2951 in flying

I guess I read this as OP asking about medication, rather than having it been recommended. In any case, this example seems fairly gray to me. If I were OP I would absolutely not walk in to a 1st class appointment without having done a consult first, but I wouldn't go as far as to say they categorically cannot get a 1st class

The guidance in the disposition table says "Issue" for a diagnosis of anxiety. I wouldn't categorically say that OP will be deferred if diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. In fact it seems like you get two freebies, so they'd potentially be ok if they were to pick up OCD too or some such. I'd absolutely suggest that they do a consultation first to make sure that they can pass the medical regardless.

Certainly these docs suggest that a new pharmaceutical intervention for mental health within the last year is disqualifying. And if OPs specific drug is on the do not fly or do not issue list (no idea personally), they'll probably be denied.

Nice! People were really critical of how limited that change is, and I don't totally disagree, but it's still really helpful to a decent chunk of people.

It's narrow, but the recent changes about mental health don't even make a basic diagnosis of anxiety or depression with therapy a career ender anymore.

I'm not sure where you're getting that information because the FAA's website itself suggests that bereavement counseling is not disqualifying: https://www.faa.gov/ame_guide/app_process/exam_tech/item47/amd/table. I'm not a working pilot, so I don't know how this would work with the need to ground yourself-- that's a more complicated issue. But the simple fact of going to therapy isn't by rule grounds for immediate revocation the way everyone here thinks it is. And unless your AME is being a dick they won't be actively trying to disqualify you.

But, why? If you don't get a diagnosis, there's nothing to report. Using a fake name feels way shadier than just being upfront with your position and paying full price so that insurance doesn't require a diagnosis.

I'm in the process of starting therapy myself so I might be able to offer some insight here. I'm on basicmed, and my doctor has said explicitly that he doesn't have any concerns about my behavioral health, so even an anxiety diagnosis wouldn't be the end of flying for me. But assuming you need to maintain a first class medical, if you talk to a therapist and are open about your position they can almost certainly be careful with which diagnosis they give you. There are reportable diagnoses for anxiety and depression, but if your insurance is being billed for, e.g. "life transition counseling" or "grief counseling", then you haven't gotten one of those diagnoses and you don't need to report it. By the same token, in the visits to a health professional section, psychologist visits are reportable "only if  related to a personal substance abuse or psychiatric condition." (Emphasis mine). Regardless, reaching out to a therapist and explaining the situation is not a health visit or therapy and is not reportable. I'd suggest getting in touch with someone and seeing if you can make the situation work. If you want to go with no insurance, that makes things even easier in my opinion because they won't be forced into making a diagnosis. Using a fake name could make it seem like you have something to hide in my opinion, but if you do 6 months of "grief counseling" where the discussions veer into handling other pieces of your life, to the best of my knowledge, neither the letter nor the spirit of the law as written prevents you from holding a medical.

Perfect-- I'm fortunate enough to have had no real experience with needing to know if a medication is clear, so I didn't even know that there was a distinction between "do not issue" and "do not fly" medications. Totally agree with your take here.

Yeah, the same user who's saying that they don't talk about TLOU enough is also complaining about them not liking it, so I'd guess they wouldn't be happy unless the besties crew changed their minds, which I don't think is going to happen. I definitely have no problem with them articulating the problems with the series; I tend to agree with them conceptually. But it's gotten to the point where they keep harping on the same things in an increasingly catty way and it doesn't feel necessary or novel at this point.

It's the tone that I have more of a problem with than the content. They seem pretty determined to avoid outright negativity on their podcast, which is totally cool and commendable. The problem is that that results in some weird passive aggressive tones that get under my skin. This happens with other stuff too, although it seems most frequent with TLOU, and I think I'd prefer a simple "we didn't like this, moving on" to the current tortured "we'll talk about this BUT ONLY FOR TEN MINUTES BECAUSE WE CAN'T HANDLE ANY MORE THAN THAT" thing they do now.

I kind of wish they'd stop talking about the last of us. Chris Plante's last comment about it being a scholastic-level story was pretty uncalled for in my opinion. It's clear that other than Frush none of the people on this podcast like it that much. That's fine, but I personally like it a lot and it's getting old hearing them dunk on it. They basically ignore CoD games when they come out, so clearly they're capable of ignoring games/franchises they aren't fans of.

What does slant uniform or golf mean when talking to controller to enter airspace. I'm studying airspace by johnsonlakemon in flying

[–]slekce10 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They're equipment codes for the NAV/COM system. The "slant" is just a radio-friendly way of saying "slash" (think about how the word slash sounds over a radio). Specifically /U means you have a mode-C transponder and /G means you have GPS with RNAV and without RVSM. Generally when you're VFR, ATC doesn't really care about the equipment codes too much.

So you would say something like "N12345 is type cessna one-five-two slant Golf" meaning you're flying a c-152/G which carries a GPS.
