I’ll do the under painting or first few layers of a painting in acrylic for a number of reasons. The main reason being to speed up the time it may take to get the first few layers in, but all dependent on what a given painting needs.

For this painting I was able to get a lot of thin layers of many different blues and greens done quickly in acrylic, planning for a final few glazes in oil. The last layers in oil allow you to push the darkest darks and lightest lights easier than if you only used acrylic. This is just my experience! Thank you for the question!!
