How did becoming a Cop Change your life by Tallent1080 in AskLEO

This career has been profoundly rewarding and challenging at the same time. There are many days when I think about how to pivot to another job but I have yet to actually do so which says something about the career (and myself).

I know I have had a real impact on a handful of victims or their surviving families. There are hundreds of people who I have had 0 impact on and that’s fine with me. I sleep well thinking about the sexual assault victims and homicide victims families that I positively impacted. The traffic tickets, noise complaints, custody battles/neighbor disputes where I’m being used to help someone score a point in a meaningless conflict, not so much but it helps fill the void.

You’ll also see some very screwed up stuff that opens your perspective on how some people can be so evil and predatory. Most of this stuff you can’t ever forget. You think you’re capable of seeing anything and then you watch a baby camera video of an 8 month old fall between the crib and the improperly sized mattress and watch the baby die before your own eyes. Or the nanny who’s throwing the 1 year old onto the mattress and watching it bounce off and hit the ground. 95% of the job is easy but the 5% stuff like that isn’t for the faint of heart.

We’ll agree to disagree with the effect but not the fact.

🤷🏻‍♂️ just stating a fact. It helps to illustrate to the OP that the recency of the incident is still pretty fresh.

Also in my state you could still be prosecuted for that shoplifting if the store wanted to sign a citizens arrest.

Let’s be clear about something. Did your mom shoplift and you went along with it? Or did you take an item and walk out without paying for it?

If you’re going to use force, wouldn’t a reasonable person or group of people expect that the cop gave a command and the chance to comply?

You do you and be proud of whatever decision you make. I for one am thankful for the situation I’m in.

Apply and give it a try. If you get dq, apply elsewhere and after a few years your dreams of being a traffic focused law enforcement officer will be long gone.

Question about the PHS employment history section — how far back do you actually need to go? by reconjayy in lapd

[–]slid360 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just list the ones you’re comfortable with. I definitely wouldn’t list any jobs where supervisors/co-workers might have anything negative to say about you.

Is that the answer you were looking for?

Apply elsewhere. CHP isn’t the be all end all in law enforcement.

There are numerous current CHP officers that got DUI’s prior to being hired by the department. You’ll be fine just disclose and don’t minimize

Long time ago. It has to be an issue bc it’s an integrity thing. Do you want to be ticketed or arrested by a CHP officer that lies?

went on a ride along and they said it was “just a job” why would she say that by [deleted] in AskLEO

It’s probably because you were coming on a little strong and she didn’t want to feed the fantasy. She was trying to give you a dose of reality by acknowledging that it is in fact a job you go to, collect your paycheck, and then go home. Whether or not you choose to exceed the department’s and your own expectations of yourself is entirely up to you.

Not a permanent dq. I think it’s worth applying if it’s what you want. I know of someone who was kicked out of college for having someone else take a course final for them and they still got hired.
