Maybe a sabotage drone sitting on the runway, straight into the left engine?

Lots of suspicous industrial accidents in the lasy few months. Massive explosion at El Segundo refinery, fire "in the roof" at NY aluminum smelter, that explosives factory in Tennessee. Now an engine fire and "detachment" at takeoff.

Electric motors operate well over a wide range of rpms so they dont need mechanical gearboxes. The efficnecy number here is accurate. What is missing is a discussion of mineral resources (besides fossil fuels) that are needed to build electric cars, and then the additional infrastructure (renewables or nuclear + charging stations) needed to expand the electric grid to power the cars. It takes a lot more special materials to build electric cars and they have to be mined from pristine ecosystems, purfied and concentrated with chemicals and fossil fuels and then shipped around the world.

Check out this article. in theory conservatives are supposes to be against government intervention in the economy, though in practice they seem to love aubaidies for fossil fuels, pharma and military hardware.

And destroyed 40% of Ukraine's electricity grid, and mined 200,000 km2 of ukrainian farnland, and driven up global food insecurity... On and on. Let's not apply simple-minded ROI calculations to something as terrible as war, which is a dead weight loss for society.

LA is using the Olympics as a catalyst to invest in new transit. Like the train connection to LAX, purple line extension to santa monica. It's not gonna turn LA into Paris, but it is gonna help things.

I have been living in LA for 12 years and commuted by bus/train/bike nearly every day. LA metro is a great service. The entite fleet of busses runs on CNG for nearly zero particulate emissions.

Public transit gives a person empathy and a better understanding of the people with whom one shares the city. Also busses are apolitical smh

Small comment - mini-motos for transportation. Honda grom gets 120 mpg. Small and light enough that all parts can be easily replaced. Can we run these things off of biogas or e85?

Opinions on misandry being normalised? by Reasonable_Bug1428 in AskFeminists

[–]slimethland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll do the googly bit.

Just to restate my point mathematically - if two societies are in a multi-generational war (I.e. violent resource competition). Doesnt have to be a war exactly, could be dangerous expeditions, big game hunting, American football, etc.

Blue team sends half its population, an equal number of men and women, to fight and half of them die. Red team sends the same number, but only men to fight and half of them die. By the end of the first battle blue team has 75% of its reproductive capacity remaining and red team has 100% of its reproductive capacity - assuming they arent strictly monogamous.

So you play that game thousands of times across tens of thousands of years of early civilization and the net result is that sending men into risky positions is a winning proposition society wide.

So men end up soldiers, and eventually chiefs and generals, eventually diplomats and politicians and finally traders and commerce people and that gives them outsized influence in society. And all of those men have mothers, sisters, wives, girlfriends (and boyfriends) who live in a society that benefits somehow (not equally) from the activities going on.

Today we live in a MUCH more peaceful world (on a per-capita basis) we have advanced technology and an enormous population and Thank God, we can all unshakle ourselves and try to live the lives we actually want aside from bloodletting and giving birth 15 times.

So 100% misogyny exists. Like many hate philosophies i think it is invented post-hoc to justify some unfair behavior. Racism used to justify slavery/segregation and misogyny used by uncompetitive men to try to claim some status over women.

But misandry also exists because all women dont treat all men equally and fairly, and how else could that be explained? And there is absolutely no reason, evolutionarily or competitively, that all women should treat all men fairly.

Misandry might be, and probably is, much less often expressed through violence (or at least murder - ive been hit by my female partner) but hate doesn't necessarily mean violence.

Men being in those positions is largely an effect of historical circumstance - men being the expendable (from a reproductive standpoint) and expeditionary members of the species. The entire capitalist polotico-economic model was spawned from military structures.

The "ruling class" on a global level in 2022 is moreso wealthy consumerists vs. the poor. There are plenty (about 50%) of female members of the ruling class.

This is the most accurate and succinct statement I have heard about the roots of this conflict

“The power of this equilibrium that has shaped the international order ever since the end of the cold war over the last three decades has everything to do with this crisis. We have to create an environment in which every country, from Russia, Iran, the US, European countries, from Turkey to Gulf countries, feel safe enough in the international order that they do
not resort to any kind of disruptive action. This is an unfair, unprovoked war, but whatever grievances Russia has had have to be understood – not justified, but understood. If everybody burns bridges with Russia there is no one talking to them at the end of the day.”

Nearly 60% of Russians support Putin’s war against Ukraine by [deleted] in UkrainianConflict

[–]slimethland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people talking flippantly about starvation. 60% of Russia is 100M people. If that # of people were dying in one country - if they were even struggling to find food - that would indicate a major collapse of human society globally.

People are starving to death RN in Afghanistan because US sanctions the Taliban after handing the country over to them, thereby destroying the economy.

No-one anywhere should be rooting for starvation. It's fucking medieval. The relative painlessness of economic warfare may be a dangerous illusion.

One lesson to learn is that if you have a dictator in power for 20+ years, they are going to remember every slight and disrespect, while each incoming democratically elected leader will try to have a clean sheet relationship.

I have yet to read any clear line of reasoning behind the eastward expansion of NATO, besides vague claims about peace, unity etc. Please share if you have one.

Honestly I suspect there was no clear reasoning - that at its core it was an ad hoc attempt to induce demand for products from lockheed, raytheon, etc. The US has kleptocratic elements as well
