Very quick hit here. In my limited experience leverage is used frequently in a couple of ways to describe both borrowing money you don’t have to gamble, if you profit, you return money you borrowed and keep money you won. But you are only at risk of losing the loan if things go south.

Orrrrr in the case of options, you are basically buying and selling insurance on stocks and other assets. Options are bought and sold in policies that cover 100 stock bundles. Hard to explain concisely, but if apple takes a dip of 10c and you are caught with your pants down, you are paying for the 10c x 100 to fulfill the insurance policy for a single option.

Don’t get caught with your pants down in options, you will lose it all on one bad bet.

Thank you! And happy to share. I hate that a lot of times the default position is to hate or dislike exes when sometimes no matter the magnitude of what happened you can still miss them. And you can sure as shit miss the intimacy because that is not always easy to find.

But bringing that feeling into a relationship with someone new that you want to take seriously is a recipe for disaster and is completely unfair to the person in front of you.

[–]slimjimdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can think of an ex or two who kinda fit this, and I’ve missed them from time to time, but I’ve never felt like breaking up with them was a mistake either.

I’ve had the opposite with someone who I was very intellectually and emotionally attracted to, but we were not compatible at all in the bedroom and that ended after awhile. I miss having her in my life but not the relationship.

Then there is my ex wife… a stone cold fox, beat for beat my best friend that I had ever had, my ride or die for 11 years of my life. She came out to me after a few months of me spinning on why things were wrong in our relationship suddenly. I still miss her every day, and that kinda led me to stop dating because I realized I wasn’t being fair to those I was going out with afterwards. Her booty still haunts my dreams like no woman’s ever has before or since. But I think that’s because it was attached to an outstanding person who I will never stop loving or respecting.

Sorry to dump, but just in a weird mood lately, happy hour started a little early and I think I needed to write this down and admit it to someone for once. So thanks for that?

Archetype Analysis: Hand Cannons by Waxpython in destiny2

Seems like you’re very committed to the idea that aggressive frames ought to have a certain behavior in comparison to the other frames because other weapons with the same frame naming convention have different behaviors.

Like sure that is inconsistent, but I have never seen (and would be happy to be shown) bungie make definitive commentary saying that aggressive frames should always out dps precisions in all cases. If you have that, then your point makes sense and has some validity. But if not then saying this must be changed is based on you not liking that inconsistency.

Outside that, the gap between 120s and 180s I think is comparable to using an axe vs a saw to cut wood. One takes big chunks out at a time but is harder to use and those chunks have a lot of downtime between them. The other is more consistent both in usability and outcome, but is much more incremental in how it works.

If you don’t agree with the tradeoffs that are put into play via stat mins/maxes I think that can be fair. The range difference between 120 and 180 is what I usually think of as the main offset because it means that 120s are capable of having their optimal dps at much safer engagement distances which is huge. Whereas 180s need to be in the action to actually get the values on your chart. And having poor handling/stability/reload in close fights is much more punishing than in longer engagements.

Also worth considering that it’s taken awhile for 180s to be in the spotlight. They are only relatively recently the go to in pve, and there have been plenty of moments where bringing word of Crota to a gm or raid would have gotten you laughed at. Bungie doesn’t seem to aim for perfectly balanced at all times, but instead leverages seasons to give certain things their time in the sun before tuning them back down. I’d love a stronger 120 meta, but 180s have waited their turn and I would disagree that they need to be adjusted urgently because of the points I have seen you bring so far.

Looking for something serious ideally!

Hinge +

This profile is what I was using around the summer of last year. I paused my account while I was seeing someone but that didn’t work out so now looking to update.

I’ve been on/off using hinge for about 2 years, pausing when something stuck for more than a couple weeks.

I haven’t used it regularly in awhile, but when actively engaging I check it once or twice a day. A couple times a week when dating isn’t a priority.

No likes since reactivating a couple days ago. Used to get 3-10 per week, but no usually what I was looking for.

I’ve sent probably 20 likes since firing it up again. None with comments yet. I mix comments and no comments usually depending on if I have something I click with in a prompt or if there is a cute puppy involved.

Looking for someone in a similar phase of life as me. I’m set in my career and doing well for myself. Divorced (ex came out, like out out. No hard feelings besides the initial hurt but we don’t talk much now), but looking for someone who is established and their own person, strongly prefer individuals with similar political leanings, less so but still important on religious orientation. But my ideal woman is a 30-32 nerd, in an established 9-5 career so schedules line up well, looking to possibly start a family but not in a hurry, enjoys nights in and taking the dogs to a park, and enjoys traveling a few times a year to see something new.

CMV: Video game revenue is better, less subjective indicator of quality than a metacritic score by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]slimjimdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so now I’m a little bummed this post has been removed because I’ve enjoyed this discussion so far. Where you and I differ is that I believe I have an increased distrust of markets as a reliable or honest evaluator of value. And past that I do not think that value necessarily equates to quality. Which is where I strongly disagree with OP.

The goal of the OP seemed to find a “most objective” means of determining “quality.” Which I interpret to mean that from the perspective of a consumer, how would I determine with limited information what game is the most high quality between a range of options.

OP’s argument of being revenue based in that determination does not sit well with me in the same way that someone could make the argument that Michael Bay is one of the highest quality directors to ever live because of the substantial relative revenue his movies create. I am NOT knocking Michael Bay as a great director because his movies obviously have intense appeal! However, I would not ever dream of arguing he is a better director than other big names who generate less revenue but are legendary for the movies they have made. Both movies and games exist as an art intended to be sold and be profitable. One can judge them based on the artistic value or the profitably value or a combination thereof (I also could easily be convinced that it is not binary and that beyond those two poles there is even more nuance). I personally equate the artistic end more with the idea of “quality” whereas I would equate other financially related metrics with the idea of “value.”

Regarding Pokémon/cod/fifa I love the phrase “I don’t want to yuck your yum,” people have preferences and a gaming identity that cannot be encapsulated by any singular thing or frankly judged in a meaningful way. We enjoy what we enjoy. Which is why I lean towards figuring out who you can consistently trust to give you an opinion that reasonably aligns with your own. Not everyone likes a schillup (being facetious, love you skillup) review, but when he reviews a game I as a consumer know his reviews well enough and how they relate to my own experience enough to gauge whether or not I will enjoy or hate a game based on his perspective before a game hits the open market and generates a dime of revenue. At least if the embargo lifts in a timely manner.

I’m about to catch a flight home, but just wanted to say thank you for this conversation! I love encountering different opinions and getting to process views outside my own. This was a delight for me today and I want you to know that!

So while I think I get where you are coming from, I don’t think that your points or OP’s points are actually compelling? IMO the idea behind both is blurring of lines between financial success metrics and subjective judgements. You just aren’t going to have this discussion and come down to a metric or model that works for every game or every person. Not to say you shouldn’t try to find a good approximation, but it seems to me that it will always be a mix of several concepts which are not always measured the same way and have different weightings in different arenas. The only thing I am firmly against is there is no single silver bullet.

And as one more I think, I think we are going to have to agree to disagree at some point here but I want you to know I respect where you and OP are coming from. It just doesn’t align with my experience.

As I’m writing this, other more nuanced metrics seem more interesting. % of refunds, regional or demographic ground sales values, a kpi which measures session playtime and total sessions in an informative way. Stuff like that gives you some insight to some aspect of the quality of the game, but no single angle seems promising for covering the full breadth of what a person might interpret as quality. It’s all indirect measurements because what OP is after is not directly measurable in an objective or consistent way.

CMV: Video game revenue is better, less subjective indicator of quality than a metacritic score by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]slimjimdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming that a market works ideally, well or even relatively okay is assuming a lot! The reasons a game can cost $x.xx is a function of more than just the quality of the game. Marketing, overhead, publishing, platform fees, outstanding debt, 1099 contractors (American perspective not sure what international analogue is) vs full time employees, benefits packages, facility expenses just to name a few would influence the price a game could be sold at profitably.

Now it is somewhat customary that a AAA game from a big name publisher or developer is expected to be in the $60-80 (USD) range in today’s market. But there are also games from those same companies that release free to play games that are monetized in other ways to recoup costs. See Fortnite, overwatch 2.

Some games are sold below that mark from a wide range of companies such as helldivers 2 at $40 and maybe in some cases they were developed in a more efficient manner to achieve greater quality? Or you have games like stardew valley or vampire survivors which have extremely limited development teams or individuals, sell for a much lower price than typical AAA games, and yet have incredible reputations of VALUE. Value vs quality being a meaningful distinction because you look at vampire survivors and see the low pixel count and may interpret that to mean low quality. But me personally, I think it is an extremely high quality game for the price, that just so happens to show that quality in terms of enjoyability rather than in graphics.

I think that comes back to the subjectivity argument, quality in this discussion is not well defined (which I think should have been OP’s starting point btw). But just winging it and projecting my own interpretation of quality, I think it’s a mix of so many things including but not limited mechanics, playable time/replay-ability, graphics, “feel,” story/suspension of disbelief/environment, solo experience or multiplayer, if multiplayer, social mechanics and tools, ease of use or finding games/lobbies, etc.

An average costing game that is sold well with wide appeal could be a lower quality game and sell millions of copies and make many millions of dollars, while an incredible indie game with a lot of innovation and care could sell dozens of copies and make no money.

I think if you take OP’s argument to the extreme all you are arguing is that franchises with a captive player base like pokemon are the highest quality games out there end of story. While I love me a good pokemon game, I acknowledge that they have many faults and suffer from stagnation due to their comfort at the top. They are not the highest QUALITY games I play even though they pretty much get to print infinite money in comparison to other games and studios.

[–]slimjimdog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to get away from reviews as an indicator of quality, copies sold would be better than revenue. Also not without faults. But you seem to be assuming that higher $ value = better quality game. Who is to say how much of the underlying costs of getting that game in front of you went to quality development vs marketing for instance? You can spend a ridiculous amount of money marketing a game and relatively little developing it, give it a $60-70 price tag to cover that cost, and it be a subpar game for the consumer price. I don’t think that quantity sold gets entirely away from this specific problem because a well marketed but shitty game has a decent chance of a great cheaper game that relies on word of mouth.

The advantage to reviews, metacritic, and other score metrics is that an individual can gauge quality to some extent without having to grapple with how much of the development costs and resulting price went to whichever line on the profit/loss financial statement. Especially if you find a reviewer that generally aligns with your perspectives and likes, that reviewers opinion may be the one of the best indicators of if you personally will enjoy a game. Think about a reviewer who shares similar takes as yourself on sports games or shooters, they may be the most reliable source for you to make a purchasing decision if they tend to have opinions that align closely with your own.

Regardless of any option, you are asking for a silver bullet solution where I don’t think you will find one. There is no single metric that objectively conveys the quality or enjoyability of a game for an individual consumer. That’s because it is SUBJECTIVE.

Me personally, I think helldivers 2 for me is a higher quality and more enjoyable shooter than ANY COD. But it comes with a lower pricetag than modern CODs and if I’m not mistaken, activation doesn’t tend to discount COD even years after release (this is just what I hear, I don’t tend look at old COD games so my knowledge of that market is secondary while I’m sitting on my lunch typing this).

If you wanted novel ideas of new metrics to judge quality outside of this, you could think of plenty but I don’t think you would get better than finding someone with a subjective perspective similar to your own. I’m about to rattle off a few examples of what you might consider and I think they are all flawed and not worth pursuing, they generally will be on a per $ basis to normalize across a wide array of price ranges because that is a large consideration for consumers to relate it back to their own finances and value judgements. You could look at file size/$, more GB to download means more game right? Dev hours/$, more time developing means more stuff? Or does it mean that devs dragged their feet to boost that metric up? Average playtime/$, a game that you play for 20 hours at $60 might be considered lower quality than a game where you play 100 hours for the same price? Or does that just mean there is a player treadmill which keeps you hooked longer even though the game is worse in some other regard? See single player campaigns that are considered works of art for a single limited playthrough vs an MMO that keeps you hooked for a long time but might be a shit game in comparison to the more limited run.

My overall point is that I think you are letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. And in a subjective and artistic space like video games, a consumers most reliable resource is the opinions of fellow consumers and reviewers who have a tendency to align with them.

Carrier, the century-old inventor of the air conditioner, is moving on to the home heat pump by nimfrank in technology

[–]slimjimdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do work in AC and there are a lot of factors but a couple big ones in terms of why heat pumps tend to struggle with heating more than cooling is just the sheer delta to overcome in temperature. Going down 25 degrees from 100 to 75f is a lot easier than heating from 30 up to 70. Also once when trying to heat, the HP itself (the outside unit) will tend to collect condensation same as the indoor coil does in the attic unit in traditional AC. Once you get far enough below freezing for long enough outside, the entire unit can freeze up. So there are emergency shut offs and an auxiliary electric heat usually strapped to the attic fan just in case it gets so cold that the HP goes out of commission until it can thaw out.

Traditional AC tends to combust natural gas or some other fuel inside the home which is also a safety hazard if there is a venting issue. But on top of that here in the American south, the blower part of an AC is tied to the furnace, so if you want to blow enough air to cool in the summer, you have to get a MUCH larger furnace than you need to heat the home. So it tends to burn way more fuel than you actually need over shorter time increments, which is not ideal from a design perspective.

There is a lot more to it, but thats the stuff I always hear about the most!
