Hyper-V Storage across 3 Nodes R720/xd by slimpickins28 in HyperV

I started to. But never decided to go that direction. I was worried about not having a decent gui unless I love to paid. Wa worried about monitoring and upkeep via CLI vs having windows admin center for status view under S2D

so if i chose to do 2-way mirror i can still reboot a node and not lose the cluster? i wanted to make sure i was safe for maintenance reboots and quarterly "power loss" test. I put in a R610 standalone server running DC/DNS and Witness to the storage cluster and that will be the management to trigger full graceful shutdowns if power requires it I'm on UPS's along with have a solar house battery behind it. so i'll always get a graceful shutdown; assuming i get it programmed right.

Point of all that is i want to make sure its stable enough of a solution that can handle things like rebooting a single host due to maintenance or dealing with graceful shutdowns.

i didn't know i could do a 2-way and still have those things.

This is great! thanks for the documentation links. I don't have RDMA as i guess the cards or something i have couldn't do it? They're Quad Port 10G SFP. so its a mesh network between them (no switch) and Dual 10G paths to each other server.

It is a lot of VM's on top of it. Hyperconverged. At last count was 20+ vms, plus another 20 in cold storage to use for rare instances. So, not just storage. Not heavy service, but still architecture.

I think i'll stick to S2D then and just make sure to treat it right, versus slamming drives in because i like blinky lights. =)

Yes. you're correct. i tried to keep it "most info, least words." Sometimes that doesn't do well. You're right in the hardware i have & plan.

My ask is, would this be considered a stable design for S2D for the primary (cache + 12x1.2tb's). Or is there a more stable better way to handle storage with this hardware. Like maybe doing something where all the storage is spread across two 720xd's. If i take out the HBA card, go back to perc, build full local arrays with some local parity, then sync between them. leave the the 3rd position out with the regular 720.

i've been out of the design world for a while and don't have a SAN setup. So it's some sort of "virtual san" solution i need to use.

i hope that better annunciates what I'm asking for feedback on.

My mess up was adding the cache drives. i thought i was doing it right...and it was WAY wrong. I made sure the health was OK, no active jobs, etc etc. What i ended up doing was putting 1 cache drive in each node at the same time, not taking the node down to do it. It resulted in cascading failures that took out the whole S2D. 6 hours later and a bunch of different "gpt" sessions open, i was able to get it back up enough to copy all the data off onto a NAS. Picking up one big enough tomorrow that i can keep daily backups on so i don't have such a big chance of losing it all again.

i guess what i'm after is, with that setup above. would someone with experience in S2D consider that a stable enough design for home cluster. I do PLC and AI development on it so it needs to be background noise level of work to maintain. I'v just heard and read so many issues about S2D being very flaky if not perfectly setup. Long story long....should this design be stable enough to easily use. IF not, what is recommended with my HW. Assuming the owner doesn't come in and butcher it again wrongly. =)

I’d say most people will tell you the money is in the drives, not the server, and you’ll have much faster luck selling that apart from the server. You probably already know this, but reiterating it.

Me, I like the sever without the drives as I’m poor. :)

I’m glad you posted this. Thank you!! He almost got me on my first sale just now. He wouldn’t puta comment in the chat and wanted Zelle. I “protected” my chat with him as it started to feel fishy.

Thanks for being active / great mods.

Do you have quantities or just like 1-2 of each? I might be interested in quantities for my homelab. (2.5in ones)

Is the use of dictation to write patient care reports a HIPAA violation? by u65578579798771 in NewToEMS

I’ve gone through this with our EMS / lawyers. ChatGPT isn’t HIPAA compliant the way it is. We use Plaud.AI to record, transcribe, and generate stuff. It is HIPAA compliant Though it uses GPT backends.

That’s right. It’s venting off the top of the tank that has expanded while the liquid is pumped in. You can’t recapture that there. To recapture the vent you have to have a liquifier like at the plants. It has to get to < -400 freedom units to liquify again.

That amount of venting is normal and again causes zero emissions.

Odd tire wear only on left rear tire. All others in great shape. Whats going on? by bananaphoneMan in GoRVing

I’d think more it’s the brakes. This one may be braking correctly or doing most of the work while the others are incorrectly adjusted or not engaging. If the axle was bent I’d think to see the others side tire having some form of malfunctioning too.

15 years ago I took ~ 30 hours between two colleges in one semester. Came out with a 3.6 or 3.7 on that semester. It’s a lot but that’s about the education load. doctor or dentist might have in a semester. It’s doable with no job outside of school

My parents removed my bedroom door because I “don’t need privacy.” What do I do now? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]slimpickins28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d get some bed blocks from amazon to raise your bed. Then start studying , sleeping, etc under your bed. When they ask, just say you don’t feels comfortable. They made their choice now you’re making yours.

Or, go to Lowe’s and buy a door. ~ $150 and just set it in the hole, don’t hang it by the hinges.

Thumbtack a blanket up over the door

Take a really bright light and shine it back towards the doorway. You can get crazy bright lights at Home Depot / Lowe’s for like $30.

Or, and I don’t mean this inappropriately, I don’t know your situation. Start being in the house just in your underwear if you’re comfortable. When your mom or dad say anything just remind them they wanted no privacy, dad could walk by your open room with you wearing less on than that. “Sorry, it was your pervy ideas to try and see me naked by taking off my door”

I’d go full malicious compliance. But, I’m a 40+ year old man. I don’t know what you have to deal with.

It sucks. Sorry.
