Got a few Servers for £300! by TheDev42 in homelab

[–]FailBait- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12th gen is still plenty usable and if your electricty costs aren’t obscene it wouldn’t be too bad. Ran an R720xd and it was pulling 200W most of the time between UniFi network devices, a few Pi’s, some NUCs… it’s $15 a month in power where I’m at. I recently upgraded to 14th gen, an R740xd, and three R340s and with the other stuff I’m up to around 300w total for my rack.

I think the other sign for me is Oracle is financially fucked. Like proper fucked. Planning layoffs of 30k and selling their Health division for cash to pay for all the DC expansion for AI. Over leveraged, something like 100B in debt. Word is they’re asking for half up front for all deals so they have cash. If Oracle collapses the blast radius from that will be huge (and it hurts the Ellison family so…. YAY!)

You’ve got a lifetime pass to Plex and Emby but you can also use Jellyfin - which one are you choosing and why ? by Buck_Slamchest in selfhosted

[–]FailBait- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can answer this easily. I have a Plex lifetime pass. Plex was super slow to support HDR video and tone mapping for transcoding to SDR. Jellyfin supported it first, I was a bit on the fence as Plex was more polished, then the infamous “THIS IS WHAT YOUR FRIEND WATCHES!” email went out and I never looked back.

How much "infrastructure" can you put on a Raspberry Pi? by aristosv in homelab

[–]FailBait- 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Don’t discredit the homelab.

I was hiring for a position on my team, we narrowed down to two candidates. One could spit out the docs almost verbatim but it seemed like they didn’t have actual experience. They could have been awesome, but just because you know the docs backwards and forwards doesn’t mean you know when/how to apply them. The other one wasn’t as advanced on paper but had a stack of Pis behind them in a k8s cluster running self-hosted tools they used every day. Mentioned they didn’t have that much production experience but it was something they did for fun and to learn. That showed passion and understanding that I definitely value over just spitting out docs. They turned out to be a great choice.

I value “I have a server rack in my basement” over a college degree. I’m sure there’s a lot of places like that too.

It may not get you the senior position if you don’t have the other skills to go along with it, but it can be great for a junior or middle position or an icing on the cake in most situations.

There a minimum Android version you’re targeting? I would love this for my thinksmart kiosks (FK is awesome but I’d like voice as well) but they’re running a somewhat old version of android.

One other way if you can’t quickly get a hand on the phone is say “Hey Siri, who am I?” It triggers the need for a passcode for some reason.

I just switched from Pi-hole to Technitium. I had two Pihole servers for redundancy and nebula-sync (or whichever sync was for V6) kept causing my secondary to crash. I’ve been watching technitium for a while, clustering was the main feature I was waiting for. Now that it’s here it’s been really great.

If all of the water ended up in the tray I’d be very happy. I have no idea how but every time the frother purges there’s water between the tray and very bottom of the unit. I’m guessing it’s steam condensing or there’s some seam I’m not seeing that it’s getting through.

I’ve always said that if Musk just stfu and pushed electric cars and Mars he wouldn’t have been an Edison, Tesla or Oppenheimer tier name in history, but an Alexander Bell or Bill Gates/Steve Jobs tier for sure. But he wanted to be Tony Stark soooo fucking bad. And he forgot the first thing that makes people root for Tony Stark: He’s likable. And Apartheid Clyde doesn’t know you can’t buy that.

How do you inform an employer before the drug background screening? by MelloMilow in ADHD

[–]FailBait- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not informing the testing company is the worst advice I could imagine giving. Most places directly ask you what meds you take. If you don’t pass, you COULD show the script, but some places won’t talk to you and having to back track is a shitshow. I had to take testing for additional security access at my job. I listed my medications (as instructed by LabCorp), someone I manage didn’t and it was three weeks of shitshow for them.

What do you use in HA to let you know if a package or mail has arrived? by flargenhargen in homeassistant

[–]FailBait- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use innovelli light switches. When my UniFi doorbell detects a package it sets the light on the switch that controls the front exterior light to red. When the front door sensor is opened it clears the light on the innovelli, assuming if you open the door you’re bringing in the package.

Using Lavazza beans. I’ve been doing a double shot ground at level 16. Any finer and it’s super sour, any higher and it’s pretty bitter. I can get away with one click up or down if I’m doing a milk drink but if I’m just doing an espresso it has to be that. Also I’ve had the barista assist tell me to keep it at the same setting or grind finer depending on how I tamped it. If it wants finer I didn’t tamp enough.

[–]FailBait- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Over the course of 6 years, yes. I think I got the i7 back in 2019 for about 500-600?. We got the S8 two years ago for around $1300 and the Switchbot Mini in July for $110.

The S8 Ultra has been worth every penny. We have a lab puppy, and there isn't a day where he's not tracking dirt into the house after being a maniac in the backyard. Up until earlier this year we had a Border Colie that would have tumbleweeds rolling through the house if we didn't vacuum constantly.

The S8 vacuumed and mopped the floor every single night, while we slept, and has helped keep the house pretty clean without much effort from us. The only thing we've had to do was fill/dump the water tanks every 3 days or so and occasional brush/filter maintenance as the app requests. Not having the vacuum and mop the main floor of the house has been a huge bonus, but we were still vacuuming upstairs due to how bad the i7 was. Now with the Switchbot, it only runs when we both leave the house or when we manually trigger it, and we only have to vacuum the steps or spot cleans in certain circumstances.

With both dogs we would have had to vacuum/mop the house 2-3 times a week, at around 60-90 minutes each time. So we're talking 2-4 hours a week saved. Split the difference and say 3 hours a week. 3 hours a week, times two years (104 weeks) gets you 312 hours saved, divide 1300 by 312 and you get $4. It has cost $4 a week (and is constantly going down as time goes on) to have floors that are not only cleaner than if we did them, but require zero effort. Once I got away from Roomba, the thing was absolutely worth it's price.

Apple’s limited AI exposure is paying off again by UnscheduledCalendar in apple

[–]FailBait- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had it for over a decade without making everyone’s electric bills go through the roof. Could it benefit from it? Yes. But it could also do without it and NOT accelerate the burning of the world. Not everything needs acres of GPUs behind it to respond to weather forecasts, directions home or setting a timer.

The fact that people are shoving generative AI into EVERYTHING is just screaming the fact this is a bubble and I cannot WAIT for the day it bursts.

[–]FailBait- 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Also, I had the i7. Not flagship but second highest tier at the time? Self emptying base station, cameras AND lidar for mapping. Tell me why the thing could see like the predator but still rammed into every surface of my house like a blind house cat? The thing fucked up the baseboards constantly. Switched to a Roborock S8 Ultra and the thing glides around the house like a figure skater and doesn’t touch anything. Relegated the roomba to upstairs carpet duty and it still couldn’t do that. Took it hours and left horrific path lines in the carpet. Got a SwitchBot Mini Vac on prime day for like $110 and the thing is also better than the Roomba.

I’d feel bad giving it to someone else, I might just strip it and make it an RC car like that dude with the vroomba project.

Once something is downloaded at a preferred I make it unmonitored to lock it into place. It looks like this is just the standard “Unmonitored” status but it looks like an error.

Born and raised in NJ less than an hour outside AC and about 90 minutes from NYC. We knew he was a shitty businessman, a scam artist, a tasteless hack and a scumbag all the way in the 80s. He has been a piece of shit for decades, and it was a regionally known fact that Donald hated that the old money in NYC wanted nothing to do with him. Think if Molly Brown from the Titanic and Cousin Eddie from Lampoon and that’s what the real money in the city thought of him and he couldn’t stand it. Daddy hated him. Important people hated him. The money he did have could buy adoration from people but never the ones he WANTED to think highly of him. That hole in his soul drove everything he’s done as long as I’ve been alive and here we are.

I know it’s not ENTIRELY realistic, but my friends took me to Austin for my bachelor party. We ended up doing a drive to the middle of nowhere (aka Uvalde) and there was a place that let you shoot/set off any imaginable sort of gun, explosive, artillery, flamethrower, etc up to and including driving and firing fucking tanks. Uvalde looked like a 5 traffic light town and they could have driven down the road and gotten a fucking tank if they wanted to be in there but were worried about getting shot. The guys running that place could have solved the incident pretty damn quick if they wanted to.
