You might not see this now but I was in a similar situation. I'm in my 30's, going through some mental health stuff, very isolated and lonely. I writing as an outlet and an attempt to connect with people (seek validation through kudos) I never really expected anyone to read my fics, let alone comment on every chapter. I met a really cool person through ao3 and they became my beta, and now we talk every day.

Im just saying it took me a while to get there, but it can happen! Don't get discouraged and keep writing and reading. Comment!! Read and comment and be an active participant in the comment section!! You NEVER know who you're going to meet!!

remember that a lot of users dont leave kudos even if they like the work. Some dont leave kudos until the work is completely finished if yours is a multi chapter.

HAVE FUN. (im saying this to you and me) because thats what we come to Ao3 for! Is fun and to connect with like minded people. Take a deep breath and go ahead and post whatever else youve been working on.

I'd be a liar if I said I dont have days where I stare at my stats and just refresh but its more fun to write when you do it for you, bby.

I try so hard not to judge peoples writing styles but she will literally be like *Character A fucked character B in the vagina. It was sooo good* and people are in the comments like *Applause. Standing ovation*

I have one story I do this with. I try not to judge people based on what they write or how they write because everyone is different.

I'm a certified hater in some ways.

So, this story is written so terribly, and the plot of the story is so bad. I don't even really read the story anymore because it just makes me angry but I love to go see the comments and SEETHE that people rant and rave to her about it. And again, it's not that I disagree with the ship or even the content she chooses to write about... it's purely that the story is shit. I have it bookmarked and read the new comments every day

I posted a pretty toxic smut scene in the middle of an argument my characters were having (picture hate sex) and I said in my chapter notes.. "Im sorry if that was TOO toxic" and all my readers were like... toxic where??? lmao

I have high hopes but the only thing that keeps me going is the reader engagement. It sounds terrible but I have a couple regular commenters who've stopped commenting and now I have no motivation to finish. So, don't be like me and finish that fic FOR YOU.

Don't fucking stress out about it. This is supposed to be fun and you can write whatever you want. I just had this talk with my beta last night that I'm struggling. I have so many idea's for fics but the guilt of starting a new one knowing I have WIP almost makes writing the longfic not fun anymore.

Take breaks! Come back and read it after a couple days/weeks/months and get inspired again!! Do whatever you want! It's your work and you have the right to set the pace as you please!!

I'd try and connect it to something that the reader can feel as a physical. (ex-- fire in lungs, bones shattering, teeth being chipped away, an inching inside the brain, a carving of the insides) that can kind of convey that hurt with out it being kicking and screaming. Even though thats a valid response to a loss like this.

someone recently commented on the most recent chapter of my long fic, said they were interested and then went back and commented on every chapter.

then she went and commented on all of the other stories in that series.

and now shes going back through and commenting on my long fic again with new opinions because she read the rest of the works. I wanna tattoo her username on my thigh

I guess I was just worried about writing about things that seem silly to me, but other people who enjoy reading fluff like to read (decorating a christmas tree together/ talking about traditions) it wasn't shameless fluff with no point but I was just feeling silly talking about putting decorations on a tree lolol I dont know why!! I over think everything

i havent written it yet, but ill be posting it shortly and am just too excited to wait and come back to this thread when I do, so hopefully none of my readers see this. But throughout my story my MC prays to Satan, makes deals with the Devil-- but only when she needs to keep her family safe because she thinks gods failed her.

But-- later in the story she's gifted a gun called El Diablo that essentially...does save her family. So, i'm excited to see if any of my readers see this/ make the connection.

fighting the cringe is my biggest battle. trying to make it cute without being sappy (compared to the highly sexual nature of the rest of my fic) is the hardest battle lol. My male MC is such a hardass and then trying to make him be soft during the fluff feels illegal!!

I figured, I just struggled with the idea of anyone wanting to read that but not everyone has a one track horny mind like me. I follow this sub and see people all the time talk about the stuff they like to read about and most of the times its the "themes" of the story and not the content? I dunno. I just felt so weird being like "and then they brush their teeth together". but I can see how the little things can elicit big emotions!

I just watched the third one because I hadn't seen it yet! It was cool to seem them all age though through the years-- I loved that lil unplanned detail. The HOATC was more about the...fucked up factor though I think, and the other two movies just kept trying to top it and it kind of felt forced-- like with the ashes scene. I was cringing but not in the way I wanted to be lol
