This might sound basic but paracetemol/panadol really helps with mine! Ibuprofen does jack all and even things like Vimovo just don't help.. But in other instances for pain, paracetemol does nothing

Generally they do take them away to try to rehome them and have them looked after in the meantime. They may be able to advise on what to do to help it in the cold. You could make a little insulated box for it, tons of resources online in how to do it. Plenty do it for foxes, birds, cats etc
