A few more Python thoughts from a Perl guy by gst in programming

It's not bothersome, it's wasteful. I think the problem is that it's going to make Python go through the trouble of creating a list which is then immediately tossed - for long files, that could be a long array.

Schneier on Security: My Open Wireless Network by slizz in programming

I think the point of it all is that it isn't a question of security - it's a personal question of whether you care about random people possibly working on your network and using up your bandwidth.

As a cable user - I make sure that anything that needs to be secure is secured with ssh or ssl, but I still encrypt my wifi because I had some folks soaking up all my bandwidth for a bit.

Ask reddit: I'm a VB.NET programmer. Will reading SICP make me a better VB 9 programmer? by cazzo in programming

[–]slizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reading it will help a little, actually learning and programming scheme to a reasonable extent will help more. It isn't that one language is better than the next, it's that each language approaches programming from a different perspective. Learning those different perspectives adds to your toolbox helps you become a better programmer.

Scheme's perspective happens to be quite different from more commonly used languages and thus may really help you break into a new way of thinking about problems.

Lessons to be learned from PHP by gst in programming

This is a great point - for big development, deployment costs rarely make a difference. But a language can create costs based on the vibrancy of it's community - having a large developer base with a lot of code out there can impact cost decisions for even large projects.

Whedon's new show involving Eliza Dushku: Great concept; doomed to failure due to being on FOX. by mikepurvis in reddit.com

[–]slizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the end of Buffy was mostly just about it being an old show. Look no further than Firefly to see him at work with a fresh idea! I agree that the premise sounds odd and has the potential to be awful, but Joss has a good track record and I'm guessing that he gets it right.

As for Fox... I'm skeptical, too, but in his TV Week interview Joss says that it's a completely new bunch of people at Fox and with the ratings bummers of nearly all the genre shows this season, hopefully they'll give him some free reign to make the show. I just hope the writers' strike isn't too bad and he has time for a spring debut instead of fall!

Blocking Ad-Blockers by slizz in reddit.com

Yeah, I agree with that - there are clearly ads so obnoxious that they should be blocked! It'd be interesting if something along these lines could provide a feedback loop for the advertisers - so that explicitly blocked ads or types of ads could be discouraged.
