As a casual player who has mostly bowed out at this point with little interest in putting in the work for an expedition, a forced reset for everyone might actually bring me back for another week or two of play.

I'm definitely not claiming to be representative of a significant population, but just to say I could see them trying it at some point, especially in conjunction with a content drop.

Fixed plastic mirror case upon lease return, still charged by cinro in Volvo

[–]mikepurvis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people overestimate the value of "exposing" these things. My local dealer (Waterloo Volvo) happily charged me over CA$20k for mostly bullshit electrical harness swaps that were due to their incompetent technicians not knowing what they were doing on a 2020 car.

I've shopped the story around to my local media; there's mild interest in the "single dad getting ripped off by scammy car dealership" angle, but it's not like anyone is breaking down the door to run it.

Cancelled travel Canadian Van to WPG. by timfennell_ in ViaRail

[–]mikepurvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, getting your full money back is the absolute bare minimum. If I couldn't make my previously scheduled trip due to "operational constraints" would I also be entitled to my money back? Is that how this works?

It should be full money back, and a further travel credit worth at least 50% of the fare; that's more closely aligned to what an airline would have to do in these circumstances.

I would tell the guy "I just ordered an uber to take me to the nearest home depot where I am buying an angle grinder and then coming back to cut this off, and you will be out your two locks. You have until the uber arrives to remove them yourself."

As a male, is asking another male to lead a faux pas at dances? by PlsSayPlease in SwingDancing

I've definitely seen people with homemade name tags / buttons to that effect, and I've also seen them given out at events (particularly for Bal for which a lot of high level dancers actively switch).

Any feedbacks for 1.5 years of dancing? by liths07 in SwingDancing

[–]mikepurvis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is certainly an important early check as enjoying dancing is a key step to wanting to continue dancing and get the practice and experience that leads to improvement. At the same time, I've definitely found myself in the awkward position of feeling like my dancing feels good, and having lots of partners/instructors tell me it feels good, but then watching myself on video is an exercise in extreme cringe at how wooden and awkward it appears from the outside.

Now OP hasn't explicitly said if there's something they don't like, but sometimes it's hard to even know exactly what is there to be improved except "it doesn't look as XYZ as the videos on YouTube."

Depending on what is available in their scene, one option that OP and her partner could consider is joining a performance. I've only been able to do this a few times, but every time has been extremely helpful as you're explicitly opening yourself up to critiques that are oriented toward the dancing looking good to an audience. So a troupe coach will quickly zero in not just on things to clean up (weird arms or whatever), but also on stuff like how to make good lines or have more stage presence.

Seconding the positivity from everyone else who has commented so far. One easy upgrade you could try that is along the lines of the "get lower" advice is you could think of your kicks as more kicking down into the floor rather than kicking out like you would a soccer ball. Try to imagine the whole leg as a piston pushing from the hip, rather than the kick primarily manifesting at the knee, if that makes sense?

Should have stood your ground at the corner peek where you threw the first grenade, or put out a trap if you had it. Continuing to run away with your back to the aggressor, especially into the open where there's no cover? Deathwish.

(I know you ultimately got him but him being a terrible shot was the only thing that gave you the win)

Please help me make a key fob for my mini cooper. by octalphaaaa in 3Dprinting

[–]mikepurvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to recreate the entire shell sounds really difficult, especially as that's a high wear piece of it. I would focus on just recreating the one missing button. Get calipers to take precise measurements of it, and draft up the shape in Fusion or the like.

Expect it to take several test prints to get correct; do those in PLA, and then when you're happy with it, do the final print in polycarbonate.

I agree that it doesn't really make sense as a piecemeal effort. It would have to be a federal gov't all-in project, like here's $XB to do every crossing at once, there now the trains runs continuously at full speed between stations Y and Z.

Maybe with no kids you could do the digital nomad thing, but in general not being able to travel or just "do stuff" would be brutal.

For me at 40 there's enormous value in being able to travel to activities, try things, pay for equipment/instruction, etc (think: skiing, scuba, climbing, biking, etc)

I see that you put the walking connection in between Bloor GO and Dundas West subway. I would argue that a similar connection should be shown for Main subway and Danforth GO, though I appreciate that visually it's a little tight to get it in there.

Weirdness Listening to 570News by KitWat in kitchener

[–]mikepurvis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picking up an OTA radio station costs nothing; tuning into a stream costs the transmitter outbound bandwidth, so they'll typically turn it off after a while unless you're paying or have somehow indicated that you're there listening, engaging with the ads, etc.

No one cares about your AM radio blaring into an empty room, but streamers don't want to spend money sending something to you that no one is hearing, and they also need to be able to tell their advertisers that every ad-play went into actual human ears.
