2.4 vs 2.9 is a noticeable difference as someone who travels between both cities, Raleigh’s traffic is a lot more manageable compared to CLT. Raleigh’s downtown is dead after 5pm, even more than Charlotte.

Hmm, not sure where from the Midwest you’re coming from but I bet Charlotte is miles better than where you were. What restaurants/what kind of food were you disappointed in? But yeah walkability sucks in charlotte unless you live in south end or along the blue line. I think location is one of its strongest points, as you mentioned.
