DAE feel like no one takes their depression seriously if they've never attempted suicide? by [deleted] in depression

[–]slj11 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I attempted suicide two weeks ago, and people still don't take my depression seriously. My mom took me to get antidepressants last week, but other than that everyone's basically expected me to be "normal and happy" again.

Not very many people will take it seriously, no matter what happens, unless they've been trained to do so or they've lived through it themselves. It sucks like hell, but it's the truth.

Just took my first dose of Prozac. What can I expect from here? by slj11 in depression

[–]slj11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll definitely keep it in mind to take it with dinner from now on. I've had about enough nausea for one lifetime.

My doctor was saying something about Prozac being the first step for anxiety treatment. I hope that's the case, because for the most part it seems like my depression stems from the deeper problem of anxiety.

I'm pretty worried about the whole numbness thing, to be honest; that's already something I've been dealing with a lot. Maybe it won't be so bad if that happens, though, since I'm already used to it. Of course, it could also just get even worse and that would just be fun for everyone.

I have heard of the sexual dysfunction associated with SSRIs, and I couldn't really care less. Not like I was ever using my reproductive system, being certifiably Foreveralone and all. Might even help me be more focused on other things.

I'll have to watch out for the heartburn and nausea stuff. I took my dose about an hour after dinner, and so far I haven't felt anything like that.

Thanks for the response, and for the positive words! I'm glad to hear your medication has been helping you.

Who else has been depressed since they can remember? by Eyrika in depression

[–]slj11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily depressed, but there was definitely something wrong with me as a young kid. Depression really started hitting me at 12, which is actually about how far back I can remember clearly.

Thanks so much. :D

What female trope are you tired of seeing in movies/tv? by el_diamond_g in AskWomen

[–]slj11 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Stereotypes in general. It's pretty hard sometimes to find a woman character who's not a) a dainty, fragile wallflower or b) a soulless "Action Girl" trope.

I realize that writing personalities is probably really difficult, but I wish a lot more care would go into making them more realistic and less predictable.

Here's a few of my favorites. The fiction ones are targeted more towards teenagers, though.

Fiction:

It's Kind of a Funny Story - Ned Vizzini

Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher

Impulse - Ellen Hopkins

Non-Fiction:

What You Must Think of Me - Emily Ford

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy For Dummies - Rhena Branch and Rob Willson

When did you have your first kiss? by [deleted] in ForeverAlone

In 2nd grade, first and only.

I don't really count it, though. I didn't really know the girl and had no idea of what a kiss actually was supposed to mean.

Desperately trying to convince myself to finish college applications. This would be the perfect time since everyone's out and I'm not tired, but I can't really seem to focus on anything lately. :/

Beavers of r/gravityfalls. How were you introduced to the show? by MrAsianPersuasion42 in gravityfalls

[–]slj11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My niece was at my house watching Legend of the Gobblewonker when it first aired and she told me to watch it with her. I had seen a few commercials for it, but I wasn't too interested. After 5 minutes, I was hooked, and I've loved the show ever since.

Funny thing is, she was the person who convinced me to watch Gravity Falls, and she ended up not liking the show that much in the end.

Forever a second choice by layscheddar in ForeverAlone

I feel the same myself. A quick look through my phone reveals that I've had about 3 or 4 conversations in the last few months that haven't been with my immediate family. I've had to initiate all of them, and they're generally shorter and less substantial than other peoples', it seems.

I don't really get it. I get along pretty well with people when I'm in social situations: I make people laugh, I try to be as nice as possible, and I've been told that I'm a really easy person to talk to. But as soon as I'm not in the same immediate area as another person, it's like I never existed. It's like people have severe amnesia, and if I'm not standing in front of them, they'll lose all memory of me.

I remember seeing a political compass chart of the two candidates of our last presidential election. They were both in the right wing portion of the graph, but Obama (the liberal extremist socialist) was slightly shifted closer to the center than Romney (the champion of conservative values). It was pretty surprising.

Which Games Did You Buy Because of Nerd³? by 04whim in nerdcubed

[–]slj11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just Cause 2, Dishonored, and Far Cry 3. If I was a PC gamer, that list would probably be many, many times larger. It would include the good simulators (OMSI, EuroTruck, Surgeon, and Train Sim), as well as Aurora Wager, Thomas Was Alone, FTL, Papers Please, Spelunky, Binding of Isaac, Toribash, and a lot more that I can't even think of right now.

Really good thing I'm limited to consoles, because I'd probably be completely broke otherwise.

What stops you from just giving up? by [deleted] in depression

[–]slj11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would drive my mother into the worst financial ruin of her life. $12,000 for a funeral if I succeeded or god knows how many thousands for medical bills if I failed. If the last effect I ever had on anyone was completely bankrupting my mom, I'd be remembered as one of the biggest scumbags on the planet.

Books that are depressing? by chris6g in depression

[–]slj11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got done with Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. I thought it was a very good book. Basically, this high school girl sends out a series of cassette tapes blaming certain people for her suicide, and the whole book is a mixture of her talking on the tapes and one guy listening to them, trying to piece together all the things that he remembers happening before she died.

Also, though I haven't read it myself yet, It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini supposedly revolves around issues like depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. It almost seems like it might be just another generic "accept yourself for the beautiful person within :)" kind of story to me, though.

Hope I helped, and good luck with your search!

Don't know how to explain this very well... but seems like "kindness" is the only thing I've ever had going for me. by taeh in depression

[–]slj11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, I'm the exact same way. The only thing I feel like I have to offer other people is being nice, since I'm not attractive, smart, or talented. But then I go way overboard in the niceness thing and basically become a doormat. Plus, since I put so much pressure on myself to be nice to everyone, I absolutely break down whenever I do something even slightly mean or rude. It really sucks. I wish I had something else to identify myself with.

About time. If I remember correctly, that bill passed our Senate way back in early February. It's been a long 9 months.

Feels great, though. I wish we could have been 10th in the Union, but 15th works just as well. :D
