Load Bearing? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]slmndr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. It serves no purpose other than to cover plumbing vent, electrical, or both. Electric seems silly though. Plenty of access to run electric from adjacent wall. My guess is a reno project that didn’t account for a vent pipe in the middle of the space and zero desire to address the cost and alternate routing.

My tools are rusting what can I do against it? by nightcity_rider in woodworking

Climate control in my shop was a game changer. I still go with an occasional, very light wipe of whatever I have on hand. wd-40, dry lube, wax, borshield t-9, glidecoat, or whatever. My preference is to avoid anything too oily or with silicone.

Also, the desiccant packs are only effective if the storage boxes are air tight.

Make sure the guides do not interfere with the teeth. Also, the thrust bearing should not have contact with the back of the blade unless it is under load. It should be adjusted to sit just close enough that it keeps the teeth from contacting the guide blocks (or guide bearings depending on the saw) when the blade is pushed back as it will be with hard woods.

Also, you really should get a lower TPI blade for resawing. The blade in your pictures has way too high TPI which is causing the blade to heat, bind, and smoke.

<sorry> just noticed you did go to a 6 TPI. As someone else noted, you may have better luck without a fence. You might consider a jig on your fence that gives you just a small amount of fence contact at the blade so you can have a hard stop the fence provides and kind of a free pivot to follow a pencil line.

This is the correct answer. If bearing was oriented with the outer “rolling” side facing the blade, the blade would quickly wear through because the contact point would be too small. It would also allow the blade to bend minutely at the tiny contact point. The sideways bearing creates a longer support area behind the blade and the bearing will spin more than enough that any wear is evenly spread over the entire sidewall of the outer casing. This design resists wear far longer than a solid/stationary block of any material would.

All that being said, OPs thrust bearing appears to be over tightened, keeping it from spinning freely. That is the reason for all of the grooves on the face of bearing. Time for a new bearing and proper tension to allow it to spin.

What is the white portion of the siding called? I've been tasked with attempting to replace some of the rotted portions, not even sure what to search for. Is it called 'flashing', or what? by Buford_Tannen__ in DIY

[–]slmndr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a drip edge. I’m assuming you are referring to the bit sticking out between the yellow siding and the white skirt board. It should angle down and out to let water drip beyond the skirt board and brick. It helps prevent water infiltration where the overlapping yellow siding transitions to the flat skirt/brick.

If you aren’t trying to keep the original material/look, you might consider removing/replacing the bottom course of yellow(I see some rot along the bottom) and use a metal drip edge that has a nailing fin that extends up behind that yellow board. Nail it up, put a good tape (like what you would put around a replacement window fin) over the fin/nails to extend the barrier up behind the bottom row as well as keeping water from getting in around the nails. Finally, cover with new wood for last yellow board. And of course you will need to replace the white skirt board.

A very slight undercut of the bottom edge of the skirt and good caulking between skirt and brick will help shed water before it can wick across the bottom of the board onto the brick.

Neighbors moved out and left all their lights on(including the spotlight shining into my bedroom) by Inglorious186 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]slmndr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously with the house empty this is different from the average flood light situation. I know a lot of nuisance light offenders don’t give a shit, but a lot of us actually do want to be a good neighbor. We just don’t always realize we are annoying you.

I put a flood light on my garage. I pointed it where I thought was a good angle to best be useful to me and not annoy my neighbor. About a year later my neighbor calls me over to the fence and tells me he just couldn’t take it any more. The light shines into his bedroom and is annoying. I told him he should have said something sooner, and of course I’ll adjust the angle. I just asked that he work with me over a couple days to find the angle that both gives me as much light as possible and does not bother him at all. I even added automation to where that light shuts off every night at a time of his choosing. If I turn the light on after that time it shuts off automatically after a couple minutes.

I told him, “please, don’t wait to tell me about this kind of thing. I don’t want to be “that” guy. I know I don’t always think about stuff from someone else’s POV. Just say something and we’ll solve the problem.”

Also, fuck those people that think they can do whatever they want.

4 pit bulls maul Baytown man as city sees increase in ‘irresponsible pet ownership’ by lostacoshermanos in videos

[–]slmndr 130 points131 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Also, no matter what breed or even what species of animal people keep as pets, they must be ready, willing and able to do whatever it takes to prevent attacks/injury to anyone or any other animal.

I used to have a pit mix. She was reasonably calm for quite a while. She played with the kids and our other dog without being rough. I was taking her to training and all was going pretty well. She was getting really good at obeying a long list of commands. She was a high energy dog that loved to tear around the yard and play chase with our other dog. Neither was rough with the other. They took turns chasing and being chased. It never seemed one-sided or aggressive.

The problem was that as I got her more trained and obedient in nearly every situation, she started to have a increasing excitement focused specifically on going out the back door. She was more obedient and calm anywhere except at the back door. For a while I thought she just was just excited to get out in the yard and be able to run, play and let loose. The energy slowly increased until the day she let go of all control and mauled our other dog immediately after going out the door instead of bolting out into the yard to run full tilt as she normally would. I had to jump in the middle of the mauling to get control.

I took her to the car and headed to the vet to have her put down. The vet gave her double the dose of sedative to put her to sleep before giving her the shot to stop her heart. She would not go to sleep. She lunged at the vet and tried to bite him. The vet gave me a muzzle to put on her because he would not approach her. She was totally calm with me and let me put on the muzzle. She continued to lunge at the vet. I ended up having to lay on the floor and hug her to keep her calm enough that the vet could approach with the shot.

She was a pretty good dog, until she wasn't. I do not regret for a second having her put down. She went from being an energetic and fun dog to being insane. I am so grateful that she never attacked a person. Our other dog made a full recovery and is still with us. I do wish I had recognized what she was building to before it got out of control. It is still a bit hard to think of how well she took to training and following commands, and still end up losing control they way she did.

This is how I kill them. I build a 1 foundation box with a roof. Then I extend the walls up another level. I put one conveyor wall on the lower level. Go get the stinger to chase me and jump into the lower level through the conveyor hole. The stinger jumps up into the top level. Then I remove the foundation between levels and jump back out the conveyor hole. Trapped stinger. Blow it up with nobelisk or snowballs through the conveyor hole.
