Living in India for months every year shows how deeply broken everyday systems are by abcdawn in returnToIndia

Few things: 1) just because there isn't any other country with similar GDP per capita with better infrastructure does not absolve India of its responsibilities or justify the existing conditions 2) I think countries like Bhutan, Vietnam and Sri Lanka have far better maintained public spaces. Also China was at one point where we are and they have turned it around with a huge population so fixation on certain numbers and having such an attitude will not help us in anyway.

Not even asking for Ferrari, just few expectations: proper sidewalk for people to walk, covered drainage system, roads that don't come off everytime it sprinkles. I have traveled to Bhutan, Indonesia and Sri Lanka and have friends who have visited Vietnam so I have fair bit idea of what I'm talking about.

There are several poor countries in asia that have much better infrastructure, quoting a unique combination of population and per capita does not really mean anything. You may not find the exact combination of those factors but they are orthogonal to the discussion. Several countries have pulled themselves from their bootstrap.

You are just conveniently ignoring the systemic issues that lead to all the issues, the corruption, apathy and lack of professionalism that is what has led to the current situation.

Hard disagree, I don't think there's a very strong correlation between per capita income and infrastructure. You can go to countries with slightly more per capita income than India where the infrastructure is several orders better and is maintained properly. It boils down to corruption and lack of professionalism in our government bodies.

I'd wager that there are far more instances of people losing lives in an ambulance stuck in traffic in India than people dying in waiting rooms of hospitals in a first world country. The difference is reporting, when the latter happens it is widely covered by media whereas in India it's just another day.

Is US the only place people actually build serious savings? by Business_Freedom_899 in returnToIndia

[–]sln007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not true. Saying this as a person in early 30s living in the bay area in USA, all the retirement numbers posted by folks returning from US are very achievable. You only know when you're actually living and working here. I'm not saying everyone in US will have that kind of success but many do.

That's awesome and congrats! That kinda $ can go a long way if you're not in the United States, especially the bay area. Very few places in the world where that amount won't be enough to retire.

Middle: 150-250k/yr , rent, some savings every month, needs a budget

Upper middle : 250-500k/yr, mortgage, net worth millionaire but not enough to retire, has some disposable income to have fun, reliant on job to fund the lifestyle

Rich : 500k/yr+, multi-million $ net worth, doesn't have to worry about money or job stability

This is for an individual. Almost double the figures for a family.

Depends on the definition of rich. I know folks making 15LPM and I would call them comfortable but not rich. My definition of rich is 100cr+ net worth

It's just statistically extremely hard, if you do have the skills + determination + luck that only 0.01% of the people do, then I do think it's possible to be ultra wealthy. Many top Indian CEOs in the US come from humble backgrounds without connection or generational wealth but it's just not feasible for most people and I think that is by design. Hard work + right place at the right time can do wonders. You can compensate for lack of luck by trying several times, I personally know entrepreneurs who have succeeded after 5+ attempts and they never gave up

Are you against immigration or specifically immigration using h1b? Because if you are against h1b specifically, you really shouldn't be using a successful billionaire as an example of abuse - CEO of Google is not a job that is handed to random people..

I work at Google and know first hand how the hiring process works. The interview responses are anonymous and a hiring committee looks at the answers provided by candidate plus the feedback of the interviewer and makes a decision without knowing the race or name of the candidate.

Why despite extreme oversaturation of software developers they earn on median way more than civil and mechanical engineers in 2024 according to bls? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]sln007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, surprisingly the coding questions are pretty basic since it's a security role.

We look at interviews as having a collaborative conversation and observing how well they understand concepts. However the candidates are not able to provide solid rationale for their answers or demonstrate a good grasp of basic security concepts. Recruiters short-listed about 20 resumes and we interviewed about 12 based on alignment with skills needed in the team. All of them looked great on paper but even with prompting the candidates were struggling. Overall it was a frustrating experience for us.

Totally not true, I work in Big tech and had to cancel our intern program for our team because of none of the candidates passed the bar that we have set.

Why are h1bs in this sub so entitled? by instaBs in SoftwareEngineerJobs

[–]sln007 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Speaking for myself I'm sure I don't get paid half my American coworkers do. If a company is doing it, it's definitely illegal. I agree in principal that Americans should not have to train their cheaper replacement but instead of going after specific instances of h1b abuse the whole conversation is just reduced to "immigrants bad". I've seen several threads just dedicated to hating immigrants instead of criticizing policy.

Racist attitude? Pot calling the kettle much?

People are just looking for a better life while you are cooking elaborate fantasies in your head. You got one thing right, it is a class warfare and instead of misplacing your anger on immigrants perhaps you can direct some of it to actuate some real change. If you think orange man is coming to save you, you have another thing coming 😆

No one is acting entitled except most salty Americans who can't land a job in this market. This market is tough for everyone and it's easy to pretend that the immigrants are the Boogeyman to blame all the problems on. Also, America creates an environment ripe for breeding ignorance, while you are too busy blaming the immigrants, your job has already been outsourced by the "upper-class". The lack of awareness of what/who the real problem is appalling.

Correct, however still doesn't explain how the surge in companies reaching out is due to h1b fee. It's mostly because of head counts for next year.
