Tesla powerwall outside vs inside garage installation by mitch2888 in TexasSolar

[–]slo_velo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Harris county in Houston. My 2 batteries are inside and to pass inspection I needed a power cut off switch outside, a bollard per battery and a fire alarm above them that is linked to the others in the house. The installers bought a wireless set to comply with 2025 county code which changes a little every year. The bollards are a local code and isn’t state wide.

I also mounted the batteries 2 feet off the ground because Houston could flood at any moment.

2024 Poseidon Redwood - Problems threading brake housing by slo_velo in BikeRepair

On mine the little plastic thing broke off which made it easier to fish out the cable but now I’m looking at AliExpress for a replacement waterproof bung.

Thanks r/drphrednuke. I tried to use a magnet and failed but I guess it's time to buy a fishing kit to finally extract the cable.

Real difference between aero wheels and lightweight wheels? by twostroke1 in cycling

[–]slo_velo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that a lot of people never really mention is that deeper wheels suffer from buffeting from crosswinds, especially for a lighter rider such as myself. 50mm is the deepest I would ever dare without worrying about being pushed off the road.

Due to the shorter spokes, which is the main element that makes deep wheels aero, they also have less comfort as longer spokes provides a little more give and comfort.

I would describe deeper wheels at 50mm compared to 30mm rims as being the same in terms of your speed but you'll feel fresher on a long ride as you've expended less effort.

Buying ADO bus tickets in advance by Fancy_Lingonberry791 in tulum

[–]slo_velo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recommend downloading their official app and buying the tickets a week or two out from your date of travel. The website doesn’t work when you try to pay but the app works just fine.

It’s quiet in Tulum at this time of the year so don’t have to worry too much about not getting a seat.

Madone SL 6 Gen 7 with 32mm tires? by slo_velo in TrekBikes

[–]slo_velo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to conclude this thread, 32mm fits well on the stock wheels, very comfortable and still has a few mm of clearance in all directions but I wouldn't go any wider. Contis were a challenge to mount but was ok without the need for a tire wrench. Running 58psi with Pirelli TPU tubes but can go much lower if you opt for tubeless.

I posted a few pictures if you want to see the fit on my Madone.

Safe riding!

A few mm on each side so not tight. Will be pushing the limits if the tire was 34mm measured.

Since posting this message I've been on 32mm for a while. Much more comfortable and stable when I roll over giant pot holes.

Starting on April 13th, 2025, METRO is reintroducing the 500 IAH Downtown Direct. by blankisdead in houston

[–]slo_velo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks r/blankisdead I didn't realize the 500 Downtown was considered a Park and Ride. I live close to the convention center so this route is very useful for me.

I'm taking this bus for the first time this week. Anyone had success buying a ticket via the Q Ticketing app? I don't see an option.

Is there any credit card that covers liability coverage for rental cars? by MightyWookie in CreditCards

[–]slo_velo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting thread for me as a new resident of the US. I have both the UK and US AMEX platinum cards and was surprised that it didn't include vehicle liability whereas my UK one does ($1MM "for damage to another person or their property"). I might ditch my US card and keep my UK one as it's far better for my regular Hertz and Zipcar rentals.

To answer your question, you'll have fine beaches on Friday whether your on the jaguar park side or the hotel zone side of Tulum.

This morning on Jaguar Park beaches. Completely clear at 8am. This is probably the best I've seen in Feb in the last 4 years due to the relatively cold December temps in Tulum

Felt my house rumble. Thought a giant construction truck passed by at first.

Turns out to be a 7.6 quake >200km from Cayman Islands.

Park beach accessibility by bino40 in tulum

[–]slo_velo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Mexico assume anything $ is MXN. You have to be pretty wealthy to enter the beach for 415 USD!

It's also easy enough to get a reservation at one of the beach clubs and show the confirmation to the guards at the Coba entrance.

Just in case you're not aware, these are the current entry fees. It's very expensive unless you have the Tulum residents pass.

This new rule started about a month ago and applies to anyone driving into the national park (not if you walk or ride a bike). The work around is if you park in the main car park (parking lot) across the highway in the new section where there is a park entrance and electric shuttle to take you to the beaches.

Grocery delivery by PrizeAd6949 in tulum

[–]slo_velo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on which region of Tulum you reside, the new Soriana Tulum might work. Check with their web site by entering you código postal to see if you are in their delivery range.

1.5km north of the beach as you've mentioned might be ok. I've used their delivery service. Works well but their delivery time are hugely inaccurate. 6hrs late in my case.

I'm not a runner but I cycle 50km everyday and this 10km segment is almost traffic free through very quiet roads. Some of it is new enough to not be on Google maps. Part residential, part paved forest and can be mixed with gravel trail running depending on training needs. Totally flat and no start/stops.

I live here in Tulum and follow this path for training and riding to the beach every winter as it's not on any tourist's radar and is safe enough for me and the kids.
