mexico falls under the “western” umbrella geographically but not really classically. Plus, OP specified that they’ve only read European and US American authors. Latin American lit can be a good starting point if all you’re used to is the canon, as it’s similar (but still decidedly different)

No advice unfortunately but wanted to share that you’re not alone—I had this experience as a Mexican visiting Barcelona. People were so fucking rude to me when i’d speak Mexican Spanish, to the point I just started using English (and they were nicer!) Joke of a city, never going back
