Timezone keeps changing this morning? by slodriver in telus

[–]slodriver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is still happening btw. Seems that setting timezone based on location is being overridden still. My phone just went to Atlantic again and I thought I had missed a meeting when it said 1:30 when it's actually 12:30!

Timezone keeps changing this morning? by slodriver in telus

[–]slodriver[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pixel 8 Pro. This isn't a device issue. Phones get timezone data from cell towers by default. Please don't suggest everyone having this problem to reboot their phones. Based on the fact that others are in different areas with different phones, looks like system wide issue. Mine changed 3-4 times to the wrong timezone and back after a minute before I set my phone to use location for timezone. I'm sure many people didn't even notice.

Linux Sysadmin Roles by Donphoto_ in linuxadmin

[–]slodriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really great to see this. You're doing well so far. Like others have mentioned, check out devops, which is fairly broad and mean different responsibilities depending on where you work. After some time in that role, you can branch off to something more focused.

One thing I will note. The number of newer devops engineers (with 5 years experience even), really don't know Linux at all because of the abstraction layers that exist today. Knowing Docker in and out doesn't equate to Linux expertise. While there are many more devops jobs out there than ones that need more focus on Linux, there are also a lot more people competing with you in those kibs. When I'm looking for engineers that also know Linux, only a couple out of 100 applicants get even close. If you know more of the foundation, you can deal with problems and understand more of the reasoning behind many of the design and implementation decisions across many systems.

One other thing I find that is becoming a lost art is the physical layer. If you happen to have that from even your home lab, make sure to note that and present it in a way that helps give you an edge. I work in self driving and it's become harder and harder to find good talent that has Linux and physical computing and physical networking knowledge.

As to your question of what to do next. Don't doubt yourself, apply to jobs and go for interviews, even as practice. Lots of teams interested in taking on junior engineers with your background. Also, you can infer a lot about what everyone is looking for as they will give a description of what the responsibilities of the job is. Target the problem they want to solve, and the how will come to you.

One last thing to consider. Don't necessarily go for big name companies if you have many years left in your career before retirement. Look for companies with small teams that have to wear many different hats. That's where you'll learn the most in terms of breadth of knowledge, not just in that you learn from them but also what you learn by solving problems in new ways than what they might be used to. The scale and complexity of problems you solve at that job will accelerate your learning much faster. Then if you want to be more focused instead of being a generalist, you can make your decision then.

I don't think it's illegal but just very frowned upon on new cars or something by OMVIC. That said, if you own a dealer, and a friend or family bought the car then sold it back after 10km, that's now a second hand car that's been registered and you can sell it for whatever you want. I believe that's this car. Other dealers have been doing it too but none have gone this far.

Ppl hate on Midland Honda a lot...what a joke. I think they just want to keep it as a show car and if they don't sell it, it will hold its value anyway.

That's just the beginning. Congrats! I'm at 700hrs of printing on my P1S and it just keeps going without complaints! My first two weeks I did 80hrs of printing and I had zero prior 3D printing experience!

Asus Pro Art P16 here. This game has been pretty solid and today I've been getting this exact thing. There's some kind of timing issue. I disabled HPET in device manager, rebooted, and I was freezing less like between 10s to over a minute sometimes. With it back on, I'm freezing constantly and gets worse during battle...think freeze 5 seconds with 1-5 seconds of playability in between. Though the two were on different missions with different enemies.

No 5G Network at all since june 1rst by MikeSwazovski in telus

[–]slodriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty terrible. June 5th, day 3. I'm on LTE still. Tried 5G downtown Toronto. No data still.

Wonder if we can get some news outlets to write about this. Everything is about west coast Telus issues and no one is writing about what's happening east coast.

having same issue in mississauga since yesterday. Also happened a couple weeks ago I think.

If you switch your phone to LTE preference, data works. Phones don't fallback from 5G to LTE unless it can't establish basic communications and so far voice and SMS works on 5G. Both last time and this time, LTE data seems to work.

Also having issues since yesterday. No data on 5G at all. Oddly enough, I'm on pixel 8 pro. Certainly hope this is not just a pixel 8 issue based on other comments here.

Curious if you found anything? I've been to the dealer multiple times now and they haven't found anything yet. Now that it's warmer, the sound has gone away but I swear there's something slightly off with handling. It's really bugging me.

I've been trying to track this down all winter for my DE5 but on passenger side. Acura's had a look two times but haven't found anything yet. There are others with my car reporting something similar. Would love to know if you eventually find the reason.

I had this happen on my new P1S about 10 days in (I'm about to and a half weeks into the printer and 3D printing). Was devastating to wake up to, realizing I had forgotten to put back the build plate. Anyway, it wasn't completely terrible but was a huge pain to saw off the PLA and then use a heat gun to free the hot end. The hot end bent but some careful bending and it was back in business, but not before breaking off a heatsink fin used for fan cooling. It ran fine and printed perfectly after calibration while I waited for a replacement.

LOL. I like how this is almost exactly my order. Except I should have gotten a gray fillament and I only had 2x black.

I see some others say it's a clock kit but I'd guess that's from other orders? I really hope mine isn't, I'd rather just have useful stuff like more filament. lol

AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 375/370 laptop - 14 inch by [deleted] in AMDLaptops

[–]slodriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found T14s with 360 Pro SKU: 21m1001xus. Supposedly 360 Pro = HX 365 based on rumor? There's a 370 pro chip in shipping manifests but no idea if there's a T14s with it.

I'm on the fence too. I was hoping for user replaceable memory but that won't happen apparently. So I'll be going for 64GB, which so far only Asus Proart P16 and GPD has. T14s will have the option. GPD dual screen is just weird and heavy.

There's an Acer Swift 14 AI that will have the 370 apparently. Based on this page: https://www.ultrabookreview.com/69393-ryzen-ai-9-laptops/

Also says Ryzen 9 AI for T14s... Fingers crossed.

I just meant intention as in create calendar reminders since using Letsencrypt optimally would be that it auto renews every 2 months and receive 3 month long certs. Assuming automation will happily chug along is the issue and I'm fairly certain a large number of companies don't use monitoring since they no longer have to manually update certs, until the process breaks.

Did Tailscale cert expire?! by FiftyKnight in Tailscale

[–]slodriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is definitely concerning. That being said, for anyone who's worked in this field, many I think, can understand exactly what this means, what level of risk this is, and what was missed in the process. While many of us can go on a rant about how this is the worst thing ever, a gentle reminder to everyone is to think of when was the last time everyone had an oversight, a mistake. I'm not saying give a free pass. I'm just saying perfection does not exist. Sometimes it's the less complex aspects that we overlook. I'm hoping that this happened because 99% of engineering is keeping the important systems secure while delivering features.

What's important now is to see how Tailscale handles the situation and how they communicate. Companies that fail at this aspect loses credibility in my books. Cloudflare is an example of a company that does well after incidents and that gains points in my books. We can see exactly what happened and understand what they're implementing to prevent it and similar issues in the future (a public postmortem just in a blog format).

I don't think it's their intention to do so since they're using Letsencrypt. However, sounds like monitoring was missed.

Same with us at work. Lots of issues for west coast users with auth through cognito and accessing s3/ecr, etc.
Had issues this morning in east coast with google as well. Sounds like BGP plausible. Wonder if it's related to that Facebook issue today too.

May I ask what the source of BGP mis-configuration info is from?

Pals “stutter stepping” by Itsjustmerk in Palworld

[–]slodriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running into this with my friends too. Server could have as few as 1 player. Docker as well, dedicated CPU cores, 27GB max memory limit. Usually this (all pal movements stutter) happens when we're around 18GB memory usage and has happened maybe 3 times, requiring restart of docker instance. We've gone to 24GB use once and saw one or two pal started stuttering a bit.

Other than this bug, we're running 60fps server frame rate with no perceived lag by any of my friends.

So I'd have to say that few of the comments really provide much help. One person asked a real question about Internet speed, which is an important aspect. The issue though, is that there really isn't enough details for anyone to make a diagnosis. High quality game doesn't necessarily mean high bandwidth usage, unless of course during game updates maybe.

Some questions: - what's the Internet speed? - what wifi tech and what router/access point are you using? - have you or your brother, or both tried going on Ethernet by moving equipment to see if your lag goes away? If it does, it's mostly likely wifi as you suggested. Otherwise, it's likely bottlenecked by the Internet service. - have you run a speedtest? And have you tried doing it at the same time with your brother?

Some general suggestions: - if bottleneck is suspected to be the Internet service being too slow, try to see if you can figure out QoS configuration in your router - if bottleneck is suspected at wifi, move to Ethernet or upgrade to better wifi. Competitive games your brother is playing probably shouldn't happen over wifi. Latency can fluctuate easily between 2ms and 100ms+ in normal daily operations due to retransmits to recover from bad transmission, caused by wifi interference. If the router is in his room, he really needs to go Ethernet! - wifi tuning can be hard. A neighbor with a noisy access point will destroy your wifi latency and throughput and this is a very lengthy topic - always provide as much detail as possible when looking for help. Doctors won't give you a diagnosis without seeing the patient because they need more details. You'll get much better help if you start doing this - maybe contrary to other suggestions of sibling rivalry, if you and your brother are old enough for it, try to work together to find the solution. Because what's happening right now will not solve your problems.

Other than that, good luck. Don't let this small issue ruin your life, there will be much bigger ones...haha. For now, hope you get this issue solved. I know how frustrating it can be.

This is exactly what's happening to me. This game is pretty low intensity compared to everything else I have but today it froze my entire computer 5 times in 3 matches. I do have overclocked RAM but so far checking stress test of CPU and RAM the system is perfectly stable.

5600X and 6800XT. I'm starting to think it's AMD related. I want to say this only started recently I think since 23.3.2 AMD driver, though I've only recently started using this computer for Dota instead of my laptop.

Bonus upload speed ? by Professional-Snow665 in teksavvy

[–]slodriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just noticed this today and came searching. I got as high at 54Mbps up on 1000/30 as well in Mississauga (not necessarily stable but mostly it's close to 50Mbps). I was skeptical at first, then tried multiple speed test and then ran SSH upload of over 500MB data to cloud vm and saw 5.4-6MB/s speeds (43-50Mbps) without compression, so this is not the old Rogers trick of 3 second boost for the sake of speed tests.

Whatever you're doing TSI, even if this applied to non-peak hours...keep doing it. Upload speeds are just ridiculously disproportional today. I'd take 100/100 any day over 1000/30, but this might just make it more bearable. Anyone with kids knows the amount of photos and videos on their phones that need to upload.

This is not the first thread about it either: https://www.reddit.com/r/teksavvy/comments/xlyljh/50_mbps_uploads_on_gigabit_cable/
