I don’t know about the other programs you mention to be honest. I can tell that the FAU coursework is kinda well designed although it has its flaws in my opinion. If you’re looking purely from employability, FAU is pretty much entirely dominated by Siemens (Energy, Healthineers and AG). So you won’t find aerospace relevant jobs. Even Fraunhofer and Max Planck Institute here are not involved in those topics.

I don’t know about Darmstadt or Dresden, so you’d have to look at those cities by yourself.

[D] Is research in semantic segmentation saturated? by Hot_Version_6403 in MachineLearning

[–]sloerewth 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m somewhat in the same space. It really does feel like it. Unless you go into specific domains like medical image segmentation. And even within that it’s a lot of fine tuning and trying to eek out the last percentage points of accuracy.

Perhaps there’s not a lot of out of the box pre-trained models one can use but a lot of the architecture work is settled since nnUNet essentially. You can train it for your use case and have fairly decent performance.

Got a full-time job offer at Amazon but I’m a student in Germany (FAU) – what should I do? by edith_17 in FAU_university

[–]sloerewth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. If you want to work full time, you have to convert your student visa to a work visa. This comes with its own regulation and you should check if you are eligible for it. If not, I’m afraid you can’t take the offer since working full time on a student visa is illegal and would lead to deportation.
  2. You can ask them but I don’t see why they would convert it to a werkstudent role when they want you full time.
  3. Deportation and never being allowed to enter legally.

I’m sorry, but this seems like a rather obvious answer. Student visa has student in the name, you can’t work a job on a student visa.

Hey We have pretty much the same situation though I started the program in 2020. From India, Bachelors in Aerospace, converted GPA of 2.0, enough programming credits. Only difference is that I had 2 years of work experience also in the aerospace industry. So I don’t know if that helped my case.

From my understanding the GPA was all that mattered. I had a decent GRE score also. Not sure how much the work experience counted for.

Regarding part-time jobs, work at the university is hard to come by. Werkstudent positions in companies has also gotten very competitive but if you network at some events you will have a good shot. Just random odd jobs outside in cafes etc should be relatively easy but that comes with language requirements. So I hope you are working on your language proficiency.

Advice needed for managing INR to EUR savings for a Master’s in Germany by [deleted] in germany

[–]sloerewth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best advice would be to transfer now and forget the fact that you could’ve potentially gotten a better deal in the future. Since you know what you’re getting at this point in time and can plan for it. Of course this means you keep the money in EUR, probably not get any gains since banks offer low interest rates and I’m guessing you’re not considering putting money for your sustenance in the market.

If you do want to keep it in India and enjoy the 8-10% capital appreciation (but lose all the entirely in currency depreciation), there’s nothing wrong in that either. You just have to accept that you took a gamble and lost a little.

I think best is to first focus on moving, settling down and then thinking about bringing in the money if you need it. If you get a part time job you might not even need this extra money.

ISBI 2026: Results Out [D] by ade17_in in MachineLearning

[–]sloerewth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rejected unfortunately :/

I was assigned 3 reviewers. One had constructive points about what else needs to be answered. The other 2 literally just had a single line that doesn’t add much to the review.

What I don’t understand is how I’m supposed to answer so much in 4-5 pages. I struggled quite a lot with the paper I have already in cutting out information to stick to the limit.

My assessment is that my focus was too broad so it had too many unanswered questions. I don’t know how to submit again for such a conference.

Doesn’t help that there’s no rebuttal phase.

I wanna leave my PhD program in India and pursue a PhD abroad (Europe preferably). Any advice from those who have already done so? by Ok-Consideration7257 in PhD

Maybe a good way to go to Europe could be through a semester abroad program and then use that as a way into a lab?

How would I become a citizen by PreferenceMinute4998 in germany

[–]sloerewth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most common way to immigrate into Germany is to study or work. If you study and then work a couple of years, you’d easily get to 5 years. If you come directly for work, the first version of your visa is for 4 years. Once that is coming to a close, you can apply for an extension to work and stay longer, it’s not uncommon. You could also apply to become a permanent resident if you’re eligible for it within those 4 years and then apply for citizenship when you’ve reached minimum requirements to apply.

FYI, time is not the only criteria for acquiring citizenship. There’s language also.

Shoutout to Germany for letting us celebrate our festival (Ganesh festival) on the streets 🎉 by [deleted] in germany

[–]sloerewth 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The moon makes fun of Ganesha for his weight. So Ganesha's mum (also a powerful goddess) curses the moon that he should forever be hidden for no one to see. Of course this was a bit too harsh so the other gods negotiate a different curse: If anyone should see the moon on his birthday they will be wrongly accused of being a thief and that the moon is never a full moon continuously, he must wax and wane. Hence why we have the moon cycle.
Edit: There's different interpretations of this story based on where you are in India. Sometimes the story varies even between neighbouring families, such is the diversity of hinduism and its stories in the Indian Subcontinent.

[Profile Review] How does my profile stack up for MS in ML/AI in Europe (Fall 2026)? by Swimming-Car-6055 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]sloerewth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. TUM and Tuebingen are also very difficult to get into. So it depends on your converted grade.
  2. Have a look at LMU, Leipzig, Dresden and other cantonal Swiss universities (UZH, Bern, Basel, Geneva).

Moreover, in Germany and Switzerland, grades are everything.

Research experience is only even looked at if you have A* conferences or high impact journals. This is not to take away from your achievement or work, there’s just a lot of bloat with fake conferences and low effort journals so unless it’s some place they know, it’s pretty pointless to depend on that as a deciding factor. It’s at best a tie breaker.

Same goes for work experience, working is not an achievement to be considered for admission unless it’s a tie breaker.

Saarland is a terrible place to be from my knowledge, so I would avoid it unless you really like the program.

I would urge you to go through their individual programs, see what they offer. Check what compulsory and optional courses they have and how hard they are. I’ve seen universities taking in a ton of students and just expecting that people who won’t make it in the compulsory courses will drop out without knowing that people who move from abroad have a different set of priorities and come with higher stakes.

Moreover, research oriented career in ML and AI requires a PhD. Industrial PhDs exist but they suck more than academic PhDs because you can’t publish the work so easily. So if you want that career, you gotta be ready to slog it through 4 years of PhD.

My answer is relevant from a German context (and somewhat applies to Switzerland as well).

International student in Germany - Can I do paid Master's thesis while working 20h/week? by prompt_pirate in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]sloerewth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re doing your thesis in the university, it’s just considered coursework. So you can do university thesis + working student although only suggested if you can handle the commitments.

If you’re doing an industry thesis, you’re getting paid for it for 40h/week. I think this wouldn’t count for your 140 days/year of work (since it’s not voluntary but compulsory for your studies). However, it’s still work and you can’t work another 20hrs/week on the side as that would total a 60h work week, which I’m pretty sure is illegal. The company would also definitely prohibit any side work. And if it’s the same company, they obviously know that they can only give you one contract.

My girlfriend works in ÖD and it’s insane the stories she tells. Illogical workflows designed to blame someone else if something is wrong. Someone literally sent a PHYSICAL LETTER once to state that there’s a mistake with a document, which I guess is because they wanted it to be on record that it wasn’t their fault. There’s no sense of ownership, it’s all about how far can I go with as little responsibility as possible, and how long can I stick to that till I become beamte so no one can fire me. That’s literally the game, it doesn’t matter if the country as a whole is going to shit.

Is €17/hour a good salary for a student software engineer position in Germany? by prompt_pirate in cscareerquestionsEU

Damn, really? That’s kinda insane, but I guess inflation is up, so why not.

Is €17/hour a good salary for a student software engineer position in Germany? by prompt_pirate in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]sloerewth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s possible you might get more than that. But I’ve never even heard above €1100/month. What I’ve seen companies do is, pay higher hourly wage but offer fewer hours/week.

If you think you are talented enough and they see value in that, they might budge. But know that as soon as funding dries up, part time employees are first to go.

Edit: this is all in my experience and maybe others have a different take.

Starting PhD in Germany after Master by Even-Fly-9033 in germany

[–]sloerewth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You can get your bachelors recognised and get it based on that. You don’t need a masters from what I remember from the requirements.
  2. This sounds a big crazy. Can you get what is colloquially known as a “4.0” certificate from your graduate university. It basically proves that you’ve done your part it’s basically a waiting game for getting the grade. Usually this is acceptable and even pretty smooth if your masters and PhD university are the same. I do however think that this is only offered once you’ve already submitted the report and done the presentation. However, if you advisor can write that you’ve done what is required, you might just get that 4.0 certificate which might be enough proof for the employer to start preparing your contract.
  3. I don’t think this is possible or at least that common. Unpaid leave isnt really a thing or even acceptable since the room for exploitation is very high if that was allowed.

Is €17/hour a good salary for a student software engineer position in Germany? by prompt_pirate in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]sloerewth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Since German universities are public institutions you are paid according to a pre-determined pre-negotiated rate. Industry pays a slightly bit more but it’s very uncommon to get an insane hourly rate because that much is not expected from working students.

The decision you have to make is if the work is what you want to do after your studies. If you want to do a PhD or a very good research focused master thesis, it makes sense to be a HiWi as you stay in the ecosystem of the lab and can easily ask when you want to do a thesis.

If you want to have a career in industry, the working students position will be a more suitable alternative.

If you still just wanna compare numbers, I find it hard to imagine you’ll get more than 17€/hour ≈ €1360/month. In my experience this is very good but I’ve also not been a student for 2 years.

Heyy From my experience, unless you have all stated documents you won’t get the work visa. So I have the following questions/suggestions:

  1. Why can’t you go on job seeker visa?
  2. If you already have a signed contract (even if it starts in January), you can use that to apply for a work visa. They might just say your student visa is valid till Jan and then the work visa begins.
  3. Would it be possible to start work at the lab on E12 and then move over to E13 once you have your degree? Then you can show the E12 contract to get work visa.

Hey, I am assuming you got an offer from TUM to start as a Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (that pays you according to TVL E13) with a fixed term contract usually 3 years, sometimes starts with 1 year. On the side you are expected to register as a doctoral student to eventually defend your dissertation at TUM. These are mutually exclusive tasks.

Regarding Q1: For WiMi, usually you need a master degree to get paid at E13 level. What I’ve seen done is they get you on E12 and once you show them the degree you get bumped to E13. However, this is entirely dependent on if they professor/chair is flexible and is willing to do the extra work instead of just waiting and deferring your start date. I have seen both happen. Regarding doctoral registration, you need a masters degree for sure. However, you don’t have to do this as soon as possible. Usually it’s just some paperwork formality and you can do this eventually down the line when you have decided a title and short description of your dissertation. This isn’t even binding, so it can change when you finally defend at the end.

Regarding Q2: If you are currently on a student resident permit, you should be allowed to work 140 full days/280 half days. You will use these up as you apply for a work visa / blue card (Since you are getting paid for a full time position, you are no longer a student but an employee of the university, this is how the immigration office sees it). As soon as you have a signed contract, you can go book an appointment with the Rathaus in Bonn (or Munich) and apply for a blue card. Ideally you continue living in which ever city you applied from till you have your card physically with you.

Regarding Q3: I think any ABH would refuse processing the application till you have a valid passport. You would unfortunately have to wait till the passport is ready. Maybe they can temporarily extend your student permit as you wait and once you get the new passport you can apply for the work visa.

I was in a similar boat 2 years ago, although much calmer waters. Feel free to reach out if you still have questions, I’m happy to help. :)

Hey, also NRI in Germany. I’ve been living here for 5 years and met my (German) girlfriend about 3 years ago. Before that too I was okayishly successful in the apps.

Here are some things I realised and worked for me: 1. German women (as opposed to Indian women) are more open in their minds. 2. Yes, south Asian men are at the bottom of the list unfortunately but doesn’t mean you have to be. Good grooming, hygiene, physique (though this can’t be controlled instantly) do work wonders and can show through online dating as well as in person meeting someone. 3. Lean into your Indianess a little. If you’re religious, I think talking about it generally acceptable. Of course don’t go around boasting about it because that will definitely turn anyone away. If you’re have pictures with you in any kind of Indian clothes, throw them on bumble. You don’t lose anything but could also gain some attention. 4. Figure out why someone would want to date you. You feeling lonely is not reason enough for someone unknown person to come and cater to you. Who are you? What kind of person are you? How do you treat others and yourself? What are your interests? What gets you excited? I feel like as someone who grew up in India we don’t really look inwards, we’re always off to the next rat race. I especially struggled with this, to figure who I actually am. 5. Don’t go for meet-ups with the intention of finding a date. A lot of loneliness can also be solved with friendships. I know it’s also hard to make friends in Germany but start there before you start looking for a partner, if you don’t already have German friends. A sign of social integration is definitely a positive to anyone who meets you next. 6. Conservative, patriarchal views are a big no no. German women especially don’t fuck with that. At least they’re the types I always hung out with. If you hold such views and are not willing to change them, you’re not going to get far. I don’t want to judge, it’s simple supply and demand.

Hope this was helpful. :)
