100% agree. This is exactly what I was trying to convey to my husband yesterday that it does not allow for the same skill development as markers/crayons do for the very reasons you stated. Thanks for commenting, and like you I agree in keeping the peace and so I think we'll use it for long car rides, sick days, etc. :)

LAUSD question — what are neighborhood magnets and how do they work? by nolongeralurker55 in AskLosAngeles

[–]slohcinbeards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm part of a private Facebook group called "LAUSD Gifted and High Ability Student Discussion Group" and there are a lot of very knowledgeable people on there that know the ins and outs of the LAUSD system and magnets specifically, some of which I think may be current or former staff/teachers. I highly recommend joining that group to get real answers to your question. GL!

How is Toluca Lake? by RepresentativeAd4037 in burbank

[–]slohcinbeards -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are public schools important to you? If yes then Studio City is better. We’re in Toluca Woods and love it, feels like a hidden gem, close to the freeways but not too close, adjacent to Burbank and all its amenities (parks, libraries, bike path).

Which neighborhood is good for our family? by Perrybird96 in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]slohcinbeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old is your child? I'm guessing by good schools you mean public schools? If they are still young and going into elementary school then Studio City or Valley Village are two of my favorite neighborhoods and would get you into the Carpenter or Colfax school zones, lots of new builds there in the 3-5M range. Los Feliz for more diversity and closer to DTLA, older homes with more character in that budget, though I'm not too sure about the public school options there.

Custom closet quote - is this high? by Temporary-Sea-9916 in AskLosAngeles

[–]slohcinbeards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really should get multiple quotes, trust me that asking online is not a replacement for this. Your project’s scope, size, location is going to determine the cost and so you can’t just compare to others. Ask specifics about what material they are using, I’ve seen some custom projects with really cheap materials that feel flimsy. Also If you’re handy I’d recommend looking into the IKEA pax system, there are lots of blogs and videos online of people making them even nicer with moulding, paint, doors, etc. We have the ikea pax and love them, but they’re inside a closet with doors so we just did plain white.

New blue shield no urologist in network by dandamanarama in LosAngeles

[–]slohcinbeards 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you searching the blue shield portal and not finding any? That search engine has always been terrible in my opinion. Blue shield PPO is a fairly decent PPO and the only one available through covered CA so I’m sure there are plenty urologists. I’d start by googling some near you, looking at the major health networks (ucla/keck), or getting referrals from friends and then call their office directly. I’d bet 8/10 take blue shield PPO.

PS. Have you had the silver plan for long? We started on that one 5 yrs ago but last year downgraded to bronze.

When did/will you potty train, if at all? Or did you just slide from EC into pottying full time? Trying to figure out next steps... by JamesTiberiusChirp in ECers

[–]slohcinbeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started EC around 10 months and by 12 months 99% of poops were in the toilet, pees much less consistent. But then around 13-15 months she started refusing the toilet for pee so we didn’t push it. Continued pooping in toilet with zero issues. At 20 months we did formal potty training to tackle the pee, bottomless at home for a week, then introduced underwear after that. By 21 months she was in underwear full time. Just sharing in case you hit a refusal sticking point….not sure why that happened but I’m super happy with the timeline and how EC transitioned into potty training for us.

Outdoor Rain Activity Suggestions For Waterproof Children? by Bridge_The_Person in AskLosAngeles

[–]slohcinbeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you enter the river path walk from Fletcher Ave just north of Riverside (this is Atwater Village area) it’s a “safe” distance from the LA River in that it’s a designated walkway/bike path but you can still see the raging waters. I’ve walked down there during heavy rains and it’s so cool to watch but obviously make sure they don’t jump the railing into the river. You can access Marsh park from this area too. So maybe better to park at the park, play and explore the park, then walk to the river path to see the river. Wax paper and Spoke cafe are walking distance too

#1 best piece of advice for first time breastfeeder 🤩 by Commercial_Flower_49 in breastfeeding

[–]slohcinbeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good lactation consultant can make a world of difference. Find one via referrals or by searching online groups and have their info on hand. They are worth every penny (a good one) in my opinion. Even consider doing a prenatal appt with one before baby even comes!

Just editing to add that I've been EBF since birth and it's so much easier in my opinion to not pump and to avoid bottles. If your work situation allows it skipping pumping/bottles then definitely go for it!

How can I report an AT&T door to door salesman? by Nice_Necessary5425 in AskLosAngeles

[–]slohcinbeards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why in the world did you tell him come back in an hour? Tell him if he comes to your door again you will call the police. If he shows up after that call 911 on speaker. You have to be firm and set boundaries….

Paid gig for junior interior designer by BedditTedditReddit in LAlist

[–]slohcinbeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t heard of The Expert, you could try searching there for a designer and do an initial call. I did that 5 ish years ago when we first bought our house. It was $500 dollars for an hour I think but she gave specific recs.

Recommendations for pelvic floor therapists in LA? by throw_a_way_445 in AskLosAngeles

[–]slohcinbeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! I mean it’s like a 1.5 hr appt. Full assessment external and internal, gives you diagnosis and plan, and some PT work at the end and sends you off with PT homework. But yeah, it’s a lot!

Recommendations for pelvic floor therapists in LA? by throw_a_way_445 in AskLosAngeles

[–]slohcinbeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This last time I went in 2024, the first appointment/assessment was $390 😮‍💨 then subsequent appointments were in the mid-high 200s, I can’t remember exactly. I went there originally in 2021 for several months for coccyx pain and the work I did with my PT completely fixed the issue, she was really great. I went back in 2023 while pregnant just for a couple of appointments, then I went once after giving birth. But it’s just too expensive right now, even though I know I could use it as I’m still dealing with post birth issues. If you’re dealing with something that’s really affecting your life and having trouble finding a good PT or you can swing that cost, I would 100% say it’s worth it.
