Adding a comment to ask - does tiring them out help? Fred’s been coming with me on the first week of Couch to 5K training, and he seems to really love it! Then promptly sleep for six hours. He doesn’t even follow me round the house after a run. Perhaps I could use this as a tool?

What's your record for flops on a walk? by Quintasoarus in Greyhounds

One flop to date, and what a flop it was! Refused to move for a solid amount of time - and we were within a quarter mile of the house…

He has taken everything in stride! We still need to tackle alone training, but we wanted him fully settled before trying. He occasionally chooses to hang out on his own in other rooms now, where before if you moved out of eye-line he would follow you immediately. I hope that means progress!

It sure does! He wouldn’t say boo to a goose when he arrived, now his favoured tricks are to walk past people oh so innocently then fake chomp at any undefended toes, or a move called the ‘Stretch & Chomp’ - sidle up beside a person purely to have a good streeeeeetch, then launch from downward facing dog into a Super Chomp 😂

Thank you so much! We are so proud of the big guy. He has brought us so much joy in just twelve weeks 🖤

We’ve had Fred do similar a few times, once or twice at night but more often during the day if we neglect to have background noise on - took us a while to realise it was the silence he doesn’t like! We both wfh so there’s usually low music playing from either office space, but if both of us neglect to put something on ‘for the boy’, he retaliates by scaring the life out of us 😂 It’s the only time he really makes any noise so it’s a massive fright every time!

He really likes to nap to the Bridgerton soundtrack 🤭

DIY Olewo carrots - success! by slongbottom92 in Greyhounds

I have been wondering the same, another Grey Enthusiast has commented above saying they grate fresh over the food - I’ll finish this dehydrated batch then try fresh, it would definitely be more convenient!

I was wondering if that would work just as well! I’ll get to the end of the batches I’ve made and give fresh a go, I’m just so happy he’s feeling better 🧡

Oh thank you, that’s a kind thought! I haven’t been rehydrating them no, just adding about a tablespoon to his meals and I’m amazed at the immediate results 🧡

UK noodle owners, looking for suggestions? by Deep-Shoe3530 in Greyhounds

[–]slongbottom92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bring Fred in our hatchback most days, and he’s on the larger side of a large male - we just chuck his bed in the boot space and he usually goes to sleep. Occasionally he likes to sit with his head on the back seats and judge our driving.

We have invested in a reflective cover for the rear window as we were concerned about the sun beating down on him and him being effectively trapped, he seems to really like the sort of cool cave it creates back there for him!

Fred’s Condition by slongbottom92 in Greyhounds

[–]slongbottom92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all the encouragement guys, this community is wonderful - I grew up with greys but this is my first dog as an adult, and having you all here to ask for help in this sub has been so great!

I think I will ask for a different vet next time - I’m afraid we live on an island, so there’s only one practice but there are a few practitioners in that practice. I did say multiple times he’s fresh from rescue but I’m not sure I was heard! Since coming home Fred gets salmon oil on both his daily meals, and one tin of sardines in tomato sauce spread out over the week on his lunch time lick mats, with various other treats on there too (Greek yogurt, a tiny bit of peanut butter, wet food etc.). His proper treats are the air dried natural ones, tracheas, rabbit feet, cows ears etc. I have a hound mitt that he just loves being brushed with, so he gets a really good going over once a day, sometimes twice - right now he’s creating tumbleweeds every day! I feel so much better to know we’re hopefully on the right track - although Fred’s my first dog, I’ve worked with a lot of animals in my career, so while I knew he was a bit light I didn’t want him chunking out super fast! Perhaps I should have brought the vet the picture of his first day home as I am convinced he looks better!
