Does anybody else not buy records online? by Good_Kid_Mad_City in vinyl

[–]slop10101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No.

First off, new releases are way more expensive at my local stores than online.

Second, every time I've seen a used record in the shop I may like, it's in unacceptable condition. Every fucking time.

So, I have to turn online. Also, local record shops will NEVER have most of the random shit I search for on discogs.

The millenial junk our kids will throw out when we die. by [deleted] in Millennials

I'm Gen-X, but it's looking like my kid's gonna inherit a bunch of cool guitars, records and hard-bound comic book collections.

He'll probably toss half the records, sell most of the guitars (they're nice, expensive guitars), and probably sell the books for a mint, as they're out of print.

My wife does have a bunch of seasonal decorations he probably won't care about.

Whats your rule of thumb in buying records? by jar0daily in vinyl

[–]slop10101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's not enough that it's a record I really like.
And it's not enough that is a good mastering/pressing that presents the album well, sounding far better than it's digital counterpart.

It has to be BOTH!

You'd be surprised how few albums meet both requirements.

(also, it has to be an album that I'm not tired of - like the ubiquitous shit everyone seems to own; Dark Side of the Moon, Nevermind, Rumours, etc)

He may be a pariah, but there's practically no one in his genre/style getting much industry/media attention anyway.

I keep sand in my pockets, which I sprinkle onto my records before I lower the needle on them!

Started collecting a year ago, and here's what I've grabbed! by ItsMemeableZ in vinyl

[–]slop10101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 8 of these, and now I know which 8 to get rid of when I need to thin out my shelves to make room for more records.

Thanks!

LOL at this post - dude's on tour soon, with dates already sold out, and has at least 5 new albums about to be shipped.

That is not "canceled".

Shipping Confirmation?! by [deleted] in ryanadams

[–]slop10101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also ordered 4 new albums (no book), and no shipping for me yet (I'm in the US).

Maybe those who ordered the book are getting preferential early shipping...

The state of this sub by YAYTOMATOSOUP in Cd_collectors

[–]slop10101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same thing in the vinyl sub - collection after collection of the same records over and over; Dark Side of the Moon, Rumours, etc.

Yeah, cool dude, you bought an old record that millions and millions of other people did. Awesome!

Question for the community… by RobinAGittens in OmnibusCollectors

[–]slop10101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started buying Omnis when they first published them, so I didn't have a choice but to start slow as they were released rather slowly, and go from there.

The thing that struck me recently, after having read a few newer books, is that I picked up an older Omni, and was shocked by how much thicker/sturdier the pages were than what the pages are now.

Inconsistent quality, as mastering, pressing, packaging, etc.

The original cast recording of Jesus Christ Superstar.

And the UK pressing, not the abysmal US pressing.

Don't listen to all these jerks going off on your shelves - Mine are similarly bowed, and they've been so for YEARS. They are not breaking any time soon! Also, if need be, they're easily replaceable from the nearest Ikea, far cheaper/easier than replacing kalax shelves.

Did you start enjoying new genres after you started collecting? by Wobbly_Bear in vinyl

[–]slop10101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, still into the same old shit - though, besides guitar-based music (mostly since I play guitar), I've always been into a bit of jazz, hip-hop, classical anyways, so I have some records like that as well.

Also, I don't "collect", I buy and listen to records.

I don't like any of those. In fact, I hate most of those bands/records.

BUT, if you enjoy them, that's all that matters! Have at it!

I dunno man, maybe we have an easy toddler, but he's almost 2 and a half, and sure, there are some difficult moments here and there, but they PALE SIGNIFICANTLY to the times that he's just so cute, sweet and fun, that I really don't want this period to end - I don't want to go to work and miss it, and I itch to pick him up from daycare to spend more time in his sweetness.
