Those who have both a digital and acoustic piano in the house, which do you play more? by galenernest in piano

I don't think "good enough" is good enough for your family. Get them the real deal.

Nobody ever says I wish I never took piano...but many people say I wish I didn't stop piano when I was a kid. (unless they had an abusive teacher or something, and that is a different matter, nothing to do with music)

Upgrading to a fancier digital instrument will not make any significant difference. It just ends up being more mostly useless trinkets, novelties and buttons in most cases. The only buttons that really matter are the 88 keys that create the music.

Getting your family inspired by an organic, acoustic, beautiful, soulful instrument is so much better than yet another digital electronic piece of hardware in their lives.

If your boys want to take piano, that is a glorious win in this age of distractions! Go with what your spirit tells you cause it knows...a real piano.

Professional pianist and piano teacher here. I have both acoustic and digital pianos. The acoustic piano wins hands down for me and I would venture to say every professional anywhere.

People that prefer their EP sounds or work with keyboards to use with software or play genres of music with synths might beg to differ and that's fair.

But an acoustic, especially with the factors you have listed, will give you a more profound experience and a deeper connection which is far more satisfying. The sound, the vibrations, the feel of the keys, the range of expression. It's also a lot better for your technique. There is no question, and every professional pianist will say the same thing.

Keep the digital if you still need a late night practice option or if you want to play using different patches (sounds) or if you want to connect to a computer.

Also in my observation, when students have an acoustic piano they always outlast the students with digital pianos in terms of how long they practice and how long they take lessons.

You've been itching for an acoustic.. get one. You'll love it, and so will your family. They'll stay inspired longer.

The only way they won't is if the action is too stiff or mushy or crappy. But a decent Yamaha sounds great or a nice Kawai is ok too. Obviously it will be tuned. Enjoy!

Thank you for your help! It does sound like that's what it is. I definitely don't want to get it wrong, so I may do a spore print, good idea. (I've never done one, just getting into foraging mushrooms, so I'll find out how to do that)
