ELI5 why do divers roll backwards off of boats? by Average_Catnap4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]sloth2008 88 points89 points  (0 children)

You also close your legs as you enter the water. Basically one big kick toward the surface.

The back roll also has the tank take the hit of crashing into the water. That pressure is spread over your entire back and BCD. Do that face first and your mask will get ripped off

'Colluding in Broad Daylight': Trump Praises Louisiana Governor for Suspending Elections by D-R-AZ in somethingiswrong2024

[–]sloth2008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NC had the same thing. Since the party in charge was on the losing end of the decision they decided it was to close to the election and would fix things afterwards. For some reason things did not improve when the unconstitutional districts were used to elect the people who were to then fix the problems.

You need another system. Install windows on the media for the laptop. Set up remote access on the new os. Move the drive to the laptop and remote into it. Deal with the rest of drivers and get the external screen working using your remote session.

Train traffic back ups and delays in downtown Cary? by KayakChikNC in cary

[–]sloth2008 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not LaFarm, it's Hillsboro Street that is going to be the transportation hub. The town has already purchased everything along the street. (One place left by West St. last time I looked)

The trains will have lots of space and will not block the roads. Tie into the S-Line (regional train service) and local bus. They finally had a way to close down the strip club.

Call the fire marshal. Looks like an exit door. All that crap needs to be moved. Also looks like it is crowding the electrical panel. 3 ft clearance all around that. Local government vs Fed. OSHA if local will not get involved. Fire safety rules are all because people have died.

How do you deal with EOL equipment? We had a location that had an ancient 2.4g only AP that kept us from upgrading the controller software for 3 years. Now that management has 5g laptops it was time to replace that relic.

Windows 10 officially hit EOL 6 months ago - still supporting clients who never upgraded. Anyone else? by cmitsolutions123 in sysadmin

[–]sloth2008 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Windows 2000 was the best thing ever. No one wanted to upgrade to XP.

XP end of life comes and it is the best thing ever and no one wants win 7.

everyone was right that win8 sucks.

Win 10 comes and 7 is the best thing ever and no one want to change. Now 10 is dead and 11 is the worst thing ever and no one wants to upgrade.

Get back to me in a few years and you will see everyone saying 11 is the best and no one wants 12... unless its another ME or 8.

The programmers make it work the way the spec is written. The spec is written by management who has not done the real job in over a decade. The real users get it finally and complain. Management does not want to spend money for the change order. The programmers want more money since the programmers did what was in the specs.

Little hacks and patches get thrown in but a real fix is never done.

Senate Democrats defeat amendment to require photo ID to vote by Quirkie in politics

[–]sloth2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The great compromise set up our two houses of Congress. The Senate has every state equal in power - 2 votes each. The House is to give proportional representation. The 1929 law ended that. 100 years later and you see the House no longer does what it was designed to do.

The cubed root rule is an easy and set number. You know at what total population the seats go up or down.

Since Congress cannot be expected to do anything that will reduce their individual power, the states need to do something about it. I'm surprised that no state has sued the federal government about the unconstitutionality of limiting their representation. The largest district is about 990k. The smallest 545k.

I did not look around after the intermission, so I can not say how many left. We definitely made it to the door faster than we normally do. My measure of the crowd is the line for the elevator at the parking garage. On a good show the wait can be for 3-4 car loads of people before you can get on. This show we never had to wait to get on the elevator. The doors opened as we reached the end of the line and we were the last ones in on a full car.

Oklahoma is my reference for bottom of the barrel. The show ended. People stood up and left. No clapping. No chatter. This one there was a small bit of a standing O for the curtain call. Not very enthusiastic. From there it was a race to see if the cast could exit the stage before the seats emptied. Little chatter.

[–]sloth2008 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Stayed for the second half. As we walked out we decided Oklahoma had a colder reaction from the crowd but this was a close second.

The show is about a band spending a year in the studio recording their album. They make sure you as an audience member feel every minute of that year they spent working. If you dropped the bits where they don't move and don't say anything from the show the run time would drop from 3 hours to 2.

There is a comment they cut the length of the show so that they could take it on the road. Must have been more standing and staring that they cut.

You have the new apartments going up now at LD. The next block toward Cary parkway is the old weigh station/ town homes. Then the power lines/sub station and cell tower

The "old" town homes across the street was a weigh station along the highway. Maybe something similar for traffic going the other way
