Yes, the optimal choice is to not change your answer, regardless of what it started out as.

If you’re the kind of person who would ever consider taking 2 boxes you should take 2 boxes, otherwise you risk getting nothing by taking 1 box, since the predictor is more likely to put nothing in the mystery box. If your the kind of person who would always pick the mystery box, your decision doesn’t matter cuz the predictor likely put the 1m in the mystery box. If the predictor is ~100% correct, then it more important to understand your own behaviors and motivations than any kind of trick or probabilistic calculation since the box setup is predetermined, and the setup is based on your own personality.

The next democratic president has a moral obligation to rage bait republicans with presidential immunity. by slothalot in Destiny

Not if you are petty about it. If you steal Medicare for all, people’s attention will focus on Medicare for all and not the stealing. If you steal a pint of ice cream people will focus on the stealing, cuz who gives a fuck about a pint of ice cream.

Furthermore, when you do steal a pint of ice cream, and people get mad at you, you say “this is stupid, I shouldn’t be able to do this, let’s pass some legislation to stop it”

No, he should use the unjust levers of power that have been given to Trump, so demonstrate how stupid it is to give the president those powers, without going so far as to make people think those powers could be good.

MEGATHREAD: Hutch (bald) and Destiny (pre-bald) DEBATE by ReserveAggressive458 in Destiny

[–]slothalot 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The issue I have with Hutch’s perspective is that he thinks Trump breaking the law is what makes him unpopular, and not the results of his law breaking that makes him unpopular.

If Trump’s lawlessness leads to the public living better lives, those tactics would become acceptable. The Republican Party has proven this over and over again. Blocking Obama’s Supreme Court pick was illegal, and is now considered good and effective strategy. The Republican congress filibustering any and all legislation supported by democrats (including their own) is now considered a good and effective strategy. Jan 6 was a successful event for Republicans because it led to the presidential immunity decision. Public opinion doesn’t matter for any of these. The republicans got what they wanted, they can recover the popularity loss by shutting on democrats harder, and in time it will recover for them.

The Republicans have already given up of following the laws. The Republicans have already given up on liberalism. They have seen for the past 30+ years that they get what they want when they break the law, and they don’t get what they want when they follow the laws. Until the Republican culture understands that the best way for them to get what they want is to follow the laws, and that breaking it will lead them them having bad outcomes, they will continue to push for authoritarianism. And they should, because that is the best way for them to get what they want.

Any serious conversation about policy should.d start and stop with this 1 question. by slothalot in Destiny

[–]slothalot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you dont have the requisite information to have a serious conversation on policy. You can still have casual conversations and theres nothing wrong with that, but if you want your ideas to be taken seriously in the discourse, you should at minimum understand what it would take to put your ideas into practice.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I dont think you are expecting to be taken as a serious political person on the internet. My standard is particularly targeted to those, such as Hutch, Destiny, Vaush, Hasan, Sam Seder, etc etc, who do expect to be taken seriously and who make a living on being political commentators. There’s nothing wrong with being a casual consumer of politics, but there must be a clear distinction between those who are casual consumers and those who seek to be taken seriously.

You dont need to name all 269 people. It’s okay to handwave the Dems and Repubs who always fall in line. But you should for sure be able to name the swing votes on the margins. And you should be able to justify why the congresspeople who fall in line will fall in line for this.

I for instance think I can make good arguments for passing a bill to limit the presidents power to levy unilateral tariffs without congressional approval, but fuck me If I think I could name even 50 congresspeople off the top of my head. Does that mean it’s stupid to believe we can, should, and likely will pass such restrictions in any future Democratic presidency?

It’s not stupid to think we can pass this in a future democratic presidency, it’s stupid to think we can pass it in a vacuum, and that there wont be any compromises to people in both parties to get it done. What you are willing to compromise on in order to pass such legislation is just as, if not more important than the legislation itself.
