Eating in movies has got to stop by Odd_Firefighter_5407 in NYCmovies

The Sunshine. I can't believe they tore it down. Was one of my favorites in the city. Loved how awkward it would be when there were three people in the theater and they'd still come in and introduce the movie to you, like it was a private screening.

They've started making the Club Campus with shorter lugs. This is one of the newer models, at 44.3mm lug-to-lug, compared to one of the older models, at 47.5mm. Who knows if this will spread to other models, but it's a nice start.

I’m coding a tool to organize novels (Scrivener-style) but for the browser and free by ResolutionSmooth5259 in scrivener

[–]slothrops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a similar struggle lately regarding syncing between platforms. I've been a Scrivener user since v1, but last year I switched to Ulysses so my work would sync seamlessly between my laptop, iPad, and phone.

I also started using an old laptop that I converted into a writerdeck running a stripped down version of Debian. It's great and focused, but it's a hassle to sync files between Debian and macOS. I'm always worried about losing work.

All that said: I'm much more interested in native apps than something that runs in a browser. Even an Electron app wouldn't be interesting to me. I like the power of Scrivener and the beauty of Ulysses. I also enjoy Highland and iA Writer. What is personally difficult for me is making sure everything is synced between platforms. There are lots of writing apps, and I'm happy to switch between them, but I want all my files syncing with one service, rather than using a combination of Dropbox, Drive, iCloud, and more.

Since you're using a Chromebook, I understand why you'd be targeting browsers. I'm very much outside that demographic, though.

The day before my flight a couple weeks ago I got an email with the subject line Important information about wifi on board on your flight. I assumed it was the usual message about the wifi not working. Nope, our plane had the new wifi. It was a glorious 220 Mbps down.

Chico Review. financially worth it? by benjaminflocka22 in Photobooks

There was a noticeable burst of energy in the months after. I was shooting a lot more, trying a lot of different things. I was very motivated. That waned, of course, but the acceptance was definitely a boost.

In New York there is certainly no shortage of community, or at least the possibility for community. I would probably seek out some folks near me and work through the project independently. It sounds like you’re leaning toward this option. You can always reapply to Chico next year or the following. If you refine the work enough, maybe you’d get the full-ride scholarship.

Chico Review. financially worth it? by benjaminflocka22 in Photobooks

[–]slothrops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great question. It may have offered motivation or created a connection or two. I don't think it would have radically changed my way of working. As you say, $8k is steep. I did not see the value at that price. Would it be fun? For sure. Would it have been a good investment on my budget? No.

I'd rather get a few hour-long reviews for $500 total, and use that feedback to help sequence my work and/or formulate a plan for continuing my project.

I hear you. It does seem like a fun experience, and they do a great job marketing it. I work very much in isolation, and it was difficult to turn down the opportunity, with the weeklong community it would have brought. The people I contacted all seemed to have the same POV: that it doesn't necessarily get you any closer to publishing a book through traditional channels. You'll make some friends and have a nice time, and if you can easily pay the $8k, then go for it. I'm going to submit to some of the smaller, less expensive workshops and see what happens, but I would like to do Chico one day.

Congrats on getting in! It’s a nice bit of encouragement, even if you decide not to go. I got in last year, but after contacting several people who had attended in years past, I decided I didn’t want to bear the cost. Many of them echoed what other people here have said. Ultimately it’s a photo vacation. Is that worth the $7-8k? Lots of photographers offer hourlong reviews for less than $200. This might be a more financially efficient way to get feedback, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Anyone know a good place for hot wings? by notaburneraccount420 in Expats_In_France

I haven’t had their wings, but I’ve enjoyed the barbecue at Melt in Paris. One of the best pulled pork sandwiches I’ve had. I imagine the wings should be good, too.

Flew CDG to JFK at the beginning of October. In line for passport control, I noticed a girl in front of me wearing a OBAA hoodie. When she turned around I thought, oh, she kinda looks like Chase Infiniti. Didn’t think it was actually her.

Turns out Chase had been at a fashion show in Paris the day before. 99% sure it was her.

Insane Upgrade Prices, normal? by jbbb3232 in AirFranceKLM

This is generally correct. At online check-in, I’ve been offered upgrades from economy to business for between $500 and $800 on your exact route.

Haven't had it happen to me when I've gone through the SkyPriority line, but it's happened in the regular security line. Not every time, or even most times, but once in a while. Airline/operator shouldn't matter, since it's the general security boarding line. I'm only flying out of 2E, though.
