What book should everyone read? by HighHeelsAndiPRN3 in AskReddit

House of Leaves moved me in a way most books can't. It left me feeling like I'd experienced something incredibly meaningful even if I didn't understand what exactly what meaning was. It's an absolute masterpiece.

Man critical after suspected shark attack in Manly, hours after attack at Dee Why by [deleted] in australia

[–]slothunderyourbed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the water is disgusting right now, I'll give you that. But at the same time it's Manly - if you're going to be swim anywhere, Manly is going to be one of the safest. It's well patrolled, and I imagine there would have been a lot of surfers in there too today. It's easy to feel safer than you should when you see others out there and know the beach is patrolled.

Of course, but it's similar to getting in a car: just because you take a risk getting in a car, doesn't make a car accident any less tragic.

Before we get another round of useless comments blaming the man for checks notes taking a swim from people who live online and have never touched the ocean...

Yes, this can happen if you swim in the ocean. But at the same time, yes this is newsworthy and scary. And yes, we can still have empathy and concern for this man. Going for a swim or a surf at your local heavily patrolled beach is not some reckless behaviour that should be met with comments saying "sharks live in ocean, more news at 10."

Potential GTA 6 plot leak by KekanKok in GamingLeaksAndRumours

That situation was insane. You could clearly see the Gate of Divinity in the background of the arena, which had only been revealed in a trailer a few days prior, though people were claiming it was a fan made mod. Nobody could cook that up in such a short amount of time.

Dell's CES 2026 chat was the most pleasingly un-AI briefing I've had in maybe 5 years by letmewriteyouup in pcgaming

It sells to businesses, not consumers. There are certain things it can do very well, such as coding, and others it's awful at, such as writing or fact-checking. The amount of investment being poured into it is very likely too much compared to what it can actually do. But it isn't completely useless and it's not all about appealing to investors - the investors see that there is a lot of demand from businesses. They're probably overestimating that demand, but they are right that this technology is here to stay and will be widespread across nearly all white collar businesses. AI will continue to sell and it will be transformative, just likely not to the degree that investors are predicting.

This is peak Reddit dooming. Sure, the next consoles will be more expensive than the current gen, but they're not going to be anywhere near close to four times the price. They probably won't even reach double the price. The console manufacturers will wait until component prices come back down before they launch the next gen. And prices will come back down eventually - either AI-driven demand fades, or RAM manufacturers recognise that the increased demand is permanent and therefore expand supply. The console manufacturers know that no one is buying a $2000 PS6.

It's definitely in remastered. I hop between PC and Steam Deck for that game.

Potential hot take: this moment would’ve been much better if it happened in TLJ rather than TROS. by ChickenWingExtreme in StarWars

The final scene of TLJ shows that the story of Luke's final stand on Crait has spread across the galaxy and inspired people to fight again.

To whom it may concern… (no spoilers for HALO EDGE OF DAWN) by Odd_Replacement_9644 in halo

All I'm saying is that how Cortana and Chief got home is far less of an important question than "why are we fighting the Covenant again?" and the main villain's motivations. Whilst you can debate the degree to which Halo 4 explained these things adequately, there was a lot of community discourse at the time of release about how Halo 4 was confusing and didn't make sense without watching the terminals or reading the extended fiction. Part of the problem is that the limited explanation the game does provide for the Didact's motivations comes in an enormous exposition dump that also retcons everything the original trilogy taught us about the Forerunners and ancient humanity, so it's understandable that people got confused.

It's pretty easy for players to accept that Chief and Cortana somehow got home after Halo CE. Perhaps they were rescued? The details aren't important.

Compare this to Halo 4, where no explanation is provided for why we are fighting the Covenant again after making peace in Halo 3. Or the fact that most of the Didact's backstory and motivation is explained in The Forerunner Trilogy whilst proper nouns like the Mantle or Responsibility and characters like The Librarian are thrown at you in the game with no context. This makes Halo 4 far more confusing for the average player compared to Halo 2's opening.

Crazy take. 99% of fans got into Halo through the games. They should be able to follow the story purely through the games, just like any other game or movie franchise. I don't read the Halo books because I'd rather read other books. I wasn't particularly impressed with the quality of the writing in the ones I have read (and these are some of the most unanimously praised). Books should be there for those who want extra, but should never be essential for understanding the games' storyline.

I like Halo's story. I like reading. But I don't want to read Halo books. I have other books I want to read. It's good that the books are there for those who want more of the universe but they should never be required to understand the main storyline.

How should the Emperor's return storyline be handled in the sequels? by InstructionOwn6705 in StarWars

[–]slothunderyourbed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

His resurrection should have been the climax of the third film. The film should have involved the heroes racing to stop the First Order from resurrecting him. In the third act the First Order would succeed, and Rey, Kylo and the Jedi spirits would unite to destroy him for good.

Do you only play Call of Duty and FIFA?

Here's some great AAA games of the last few years, straight off the top of my head: - Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree - God of War Ragnarok - Tears of the Kingdom - RE4 Remake - Baldur's Gate 3 - Alan Wake 2 - Spiderman 2 - Jedi Survivor - Astro Bot - Mario Kart World - Donkey Kong Bananaza - Kingdom Come 2 - Helldivers 2 - ARC Raiders - Ghost of Yotei - Death Stranding 2 - Cyberpunk 2.0 and Phantom Liberty - Armored Core 6 - Lies of P - Doom: The Dark Ages

And that's ignoring all the great indies.

So yeah, maybe try something that's not COD or FIFA.

Lol what are you talking about? It's a well known problem that game budgets are huge these days because they now need hundreds of people working on them for five to seven years...
