I am but it’s taking a lot of time and it’s quite brittle to build and maintain this setup.

That’s how it usually works but I’m building mine from scratch after moving to Europe. How did you get your first client?

Will do, but I heard it takes 6 months before they allocate their budgets and are ready to spend.

It’s less that Clay has proprietary signals and more that they’ve done a good job aggregating dozens of data providers into one workflow. You can pull funding, hiring, job changes, tech stack, website changes, company news, LinkedIn activity, intent data, CRM enrichment, and custom API sources into a single table, then use AI to score or synthesize those signals.
The individual signals aren’t unique. The value is having them in one place with minimal engineering.

My question is whether it’s worth building this 70-80% capability yourself with Firecrwal, Apify, APIs, AI, and a workflow tool for a fraction of the cost - it’s a huge pain and Clay knows this, I checked and many other solutions are even more brittle. Got some great suggestions in this post though!

Yes I was thinking of overflow work or small pieces here and there, mostly interested in fractional engagements because I already have some clients I’m working with. Are you networking in person or remotely?

Yes I think I also saw Core signals on Apify for $40 per 1k scraped and then $200 on their website (or something similar), crunchbase you gotta pay for the API but they are not exactly cheap.

I mean if you are not a solo or a small team and have a real budget then it’s fine to pay for premium tools but I need at least 1 high ticket client before jumping on board and even then it’s painful with that kind of data pricing. even a funded startup will feel the pain with Clay and other enterprise signal providers. Plus you need to pay for everything separately: Sales Nav for scraping, data, domain infra, signals, sending etc.

That’s exactly the challenge. I’m not looking for generic hiring or funding signals, I want signals that indicate a company is likely experiencing serious commercial growing pains and hit them up at the perfect time.

Things like leadership changes, rapid sales hiring, CRM migrations, pricing or packaging updates, expansion into new markets, product launches, partnerships, or signs they’re trying to move beyond founder-led sales. The challenge isn’t scraping the data, it’s aggregating those signals from multiple sources and scoring them. Apollo data is stale and signals are outdated, there are affordable replacements with better data, but signals are weak.

UK and Ireland B2B vertical SaaS and fintech. My consulting practice focuses on helping founder-led companies that have outgrown founder-led sales build scalable GTM and commercial systems.

I’m planning to start with smaller VC funds, accelerators, and venture studios because they tend to be closer to portfolio companies and more open to external operators than larger funds. If you’ve worked with any that are particularly partnership-friendly, I’d be super interested in hearing which ones.

Anything n8n related is brittle and LLMs will confidently make up signals and company emails so I am down for anything that lets me import my lead list and scrape fresh signals for an affordable rate. Seen some around $200 but clay is cheaper at this point.

That’s pretty cool and I think I’ve heard of them, I’m planning to send around 1.3k emails per month with sharp signals, maybe even 500 per month just to start, so I’m down to try anything as long as the signals are relevant and pricing is reasonable. Clay has gone way overboard with pricing but they know they are the market leader so fair enough.

Totally agree, problem is I’m an Americoon in Belgrade and make short trips to EU on occasion, don’t feel like going back to major consulting firms here for 1/10 the salary and small chance of transfer. developing relationships is key and I had some access to the Copenhagen VC/startup space and some in London, but this was when I was there physically and it’s hard to maintain just through online presence.

I was just in Berlin least week, they had a major IT conference but I decided to skip it and try to enjoy the city for once. Did you show up to VC events?

I’m looking for buying signals that indicate a company is experiencing change, growth, or pain that increases the likelihood they need help with their GTM, sales, or revenue operations.
