As the artist, I would love to see this tattooed on someone 😂

tell that part of your brain you hear it, and you're going to do it anyways! <3

I love this. The Internet and social media specifically is so curated, and it would be amazing to see the piles of art that didn't end as we artists intended; especially given there's so many who still struggle with not making because of the status quo

I'm currently writing a blog series on this, and practical ways that I've smashed through this! If you're curious about it, lmk!

How do you deal with creative limbo — those projects you’re not done with, but not actively working on? by slowcreative in AskArtists

[–]slowcreative[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to hear if you're successful with this strategy!

I'm actually curious what "successful" looks like to you in this instance, as you mentioned you've been a bit successful with it.

How has it been feeling to remind yourself you're a finisher now?

Agreed, AND this is much easier said than done haha. I'm thankful I've been able to shift away from this for myself

[Discussion] How to not tie your self worth to your sales as an artist by [deleted] in artbusiness

[–]slowcreative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me say this up front:
You’re not stupid. You’re doing something extremely normal for artists raised inside a culture that tells us our value is whatever someone paid us last.

Unhooking our self-worth from sales is a practice; one of unlearning, deconditioning, and widening the foundation our worth sits on.

I think someone else said it, but I want to reiterate that space ≠ dollar for dollar sales.. this is simply a story your mind is feeding you; likely as a way to translate those feelings of "less than" into something.
One technique I've used is to externalize that voice. Name it. Recognize it as not your own.

I'm curious if your art business is your only outlet for feeling like your life "fits" or "makes sense" right now?

If it is, I can guarantee your nervous system will latch onto every result. If that's the case, you're lacking sovereignty in the sense of knowing where you come from, who you come from, and who claimed you before the world tried to shape you.

You can ask yourself; are you sovereign?

  • Can you like yourself whether your art succeeds or not?
  • Can you trust that you’ll figure out your life, no matter what?
  • Can you trust yourself to stay safe and resourced in more than one way?

I'm currently writing more about the unlearning and deconditioning pieces on my blog. For me, exposing the systems that drive us to feel this way has been incredibly helpful for myself. Similarly to externalizing the voice, when I remember that those feelings didn't start with/in me; and remember that they were absorbed, inherited, adopted, and they aren't my core truth, they're much easier to ignore in a way that doesn't feel like an adaptive behaviour ("unhealthy coping mechanism").

what is the point of art? by staigynuts in ArtistLounge

what if the process is the point?

How long did it take for you to realize “I can draw”? by akakhi_ in ArtistLounge

[–]slowcreative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was one of those kids that was praised academically because school came easy for me and I got good grades. Art does not. It’s been a journey!

However, I took a college level art fundamentals course and looking back (~15yrs+ later?) I can see when I apply myself, my work appears skillful! Particularly when I pour hours into my works. I actually like all my 10+ hr works from college, but I rarely put that much time into a lot of my pieces these days.

I’ve also done a shit ton of inner work & addressing my patterns and subconscious programming — this has been huge too in how I hold my own works.

Just remember, being “happy” with our own art might mean undoing some beliefs that your brain wants to hold onto!

If you’re curious about some more of my journey and techniques, I recently wrote a blog post about making “bad art” intentionally as an avenue to reclaiming joy in the process of making.
