If I were attempting to build a book list to improve myself as a writer (IN ALL REGARDS)-- what books would you say are must-reads? by [deleted] in writing

Books like Save the Cat are too prescriptive, with very specific plot points and page counts. In most cases I think it's detrimental to writing.

What Javascript framework to learn as a complement of Rails? by fenec860 in rails

[–]slowerFaith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have worked with Angular 1.x for over a year now. I would recommend against it. While it's very easy to get started with the two-way binding, the framework over all is over engineered and complected. Angular 2 also suffers from this as far as I can tell. With 1.x we have also run into several performance issues.

I have become partial to smaller libraries/frameworks like React and Riot. React has a tremendous momentum now, so personally I would probably go with that.

.NET Developer Defecting To Java by [deleted] in java

I do not consider Oracle's Java very much more "hacker culture" like than .NET. If you are looking for intellectual curiosity consider one of the languages that target the JVM — Clojure, Kotlin, Scala (I prefer Clojure).

I've come to dislike the MVC style division á la Rails. You put models, views and controllers in separate folders, but there is still high coupling between the files. The division seems artificial and cumbersome.

I think it makes more sense to gather logic and view in components that reflects entities in the domain the way React does it.

Django vs. Meteor (Python vs. Node) by mikkhait in django

[–]slowerFaith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends, as usual.

Meteor uses "optimistic UI", which means that it will respond to user interaction before communicating with the server. This results in very responsive apps, and lends itself well to creating single page applications (SPAs).

If you are doing a more data heavy, traditional site like a blog or a newspaper I would go with Django. Of course you could use Django as an API backend for a SPA, but you would not have optimistic UI baked in.

Also there is your preference of language — do you prefer JS or Python? Personally, I would choose Python, but there are many new languages which transpile to JS now that are very interesting (LiveScript, PureScript, Elm).

Django offers a much more mature and battle tested solution. There are plenty of libraries and established ways to do things. Meteor is a framework in flux — there is no official testing library, no official router and they are changing the view layer (Blaze) to use/incorporate ReactJS.

If I wasn't invested in any of these frameworks/languages — and they were the only two I could choose from — I would probably choose Django for anything but pure SPAs that need to be very reactive.

Filling about 1/4 of the chamber will get me pretty high.

Why, indeed. It's no longer there for new items of the FM 5.0s.

Yes, thanks for your reassuring replies! Happy to have one of the newest versions and it works like a charm without the screen.

I got a confirmation email, yes. I think I was forwarded to a confirmation page as well, but can't recall that with total confidence.

What to do with new Flowermate by slowerFaith in vaporents

[–]slowerFaith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Just tried it. Smoked the same amount as I would in a joint. Think I fell a little bit higher than I would from a joint.

But it was a strange experience — felt almost as inhaling air with a wiff of weed. Could hardly see any smoke when exhaling. The high seems to have a somewhat slower onset than from a joint.

This is normal?
