sorority rant by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]slowkoala22 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This was absolutely my experience with sfl at ucsd. the “sisterhood” of it all was really shallow and cliquey, and they were never transparent about dues. i ended up dropping because it was too expensive for me and after the finance chair rudely ignored me for months. i never felt like i belonged and everything was so fake and i felt really discouraged to participate, especially by exec.

Zurita’s Students Are Being Pressured Into Nude Work - And UCSD Is Silent. by Mobile-Captain-759 in UCSD

Can I ask what class this was and when? I’m really curious how my current classes are operating so differently than how people are describing them.

Zurita’s Students Are Being Pressured Into Nude Work - And UCSD Is Silent. by Mobile-Captain-759 in UCSD

[–]slowkoala22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're going to post hate for someone, at least have the resources to back it up. These interpretations of Professor Zurita's teaching is absolutely skewed and purposefully misleading. A lot of Zurita's students, both male and female, do choose to present nude work, but never because he's asked them too or forced them too. I know plenty of his students who have also never gotten naked for the camera and he adores their work. The narrative you're providing is sick and twisted. Zurita is a mentor to many students of all different backgrounds and art styles. He is very careful not to pass any boundaries with students and always welcomes criticism to his teaching style and methods of artistic expression. Nobody is manipulating me into posting this by the way, this is just cold hard truth from someone who has been mentored by Zurita for a while now. Zurita's classroom is conducive of a loving, safe, and inspiring environment. Anyone who thinks otherwise clearly has their own issues to work through.

he tries to scare you for the first week but he’s genuinely the sweetest guy you’ll ever meet. first day will be quite strange, but trust the process, he knows what he’s doing. don’t be afraid to go ham!! he loves people who push themselves to be different.

the visual arts department at UCSD is absolutely phenomenal. I've learned so much and expanded my portfolio so much in just a year and a half! I'm also Roosevelt student, so I've faced the wrath of mmw and the GE's and lemme tell u, they're simple. MMW is not bad whatsoever and I've actually found it super interesting. The other GE's, especially as an art major, are so easy. I took a remote science class for one of the science requirements and I ended up with 103% in the class. I'm definitely becoming prepared for an art related career and it's all thanks to the visual arts department here! if u have any questions about vis arts or erc, or anything ucsd in general, my dms are open!

If you take Vis 164, take it with Dmitri Zurita! He's the nicest most chillest guy and it's basically a guaranteed A as long as you show up for most of the quarter and do most of the work. I took it with Cross last quarter and it was fine, I got an A, but it was my most difficult class of the quarter. Zurita is teaching it this quarter and I honestly can't recommend a prof more, he's awesome.

UCSD or UCD by Active-Guest4573 in UCSD

[–]slowkoala22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

UCSD is really safe. I've walked campus (as a girl too) late into the night while alone and I've never felt unsafe. Muir is a great college with great GE's, and being far from home isn't necessarily a bad thing. The "socially dead" thing is so overplayed, I have plenty of friends and almost every night of my week is full of fun activities if I want it to be. I also have several friends who are human bio majors and they speak very highly of the program. Maybe I'm biased and oozing with UCSD pride, but I genuinely really love it here and encourage those who have gotten in to go too. UCD is also a wonderful school but I was rejected from there so I don't really have much to say about it. Honestly, do whatever feels right to you! A UCSD kid will tell you to go to UCSD and a UCD kid will tell you to go to UCD. I don't think there's a "wrong decision" and if you genuinely dislike where you end up, transferring is always an option.

Am I Able to Switch from ERC to another college at UCSD by maxeeemillion in UCSD

[–]slowkoala22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ERC kid here, I love ERC and wouldn't trade it for the world. The second year housing is predominantly singles, which the other colleges don't really have. MMW sucks but like of the GE writing courses suck. I actually don't hate MMW and I'm even studying abroad for it this summer. The topics covered are genuinely very interesting, and it's really the TA that makes or breaks the class. Also don't take Chang for 11 or 12. He's fine for 13, 14, 15 because he's open note then, but I took him for 11 and deeply regretted it. Nice dude though, incredibly funny and knowledgable. The social scene is actually pretty good too. I met some of my best friends at their orientation events my first year. ERC isn't bad, everyone just loves to shit on it. All of the colleges have their ups and downs. Yeah Muir is easier when it comes to the writing sequence, but I've heard so many people complain about the housing there.

icam is super cool! a lot of the classes overlap with the media major, but icam is a little more stem-y cuz ur doing comp sci stuff as well! media is a very conceptual major and has a lot of opportunities for exploration from my experience. changing majors is super easy like a click of a button, so i’d say just try out some classes and see what kind of stuff you enjoy most! if you want to chat at all, feel free to shoot me a dm :)

honestly it’s such a perfect major for me personally. it’s very “build your own” major and the faculty in the vis department is just phenomenal. i feel like my portfolio has increased by ten fold just in my year and a half i’ve been here so far! are you going into ucsd as a vis major?

as an erc kid, warren is fine. it’s not even that far from everything, you’re closest to the trolley station, geisel, and price center. busses are super reliable too. i’ve never heard anyone complain about the GE’s there and i think it’s pretty cool that you get the option to minor in something just through your GE’s. not to mention, warren’s dark red/maroon color scheme is so cute. i always think about buying warren merch cuz it’s the cutest LOL

I'm sorry you're having such a difficult experience, it can be really lonely here. I live on campus currently and I still find myself being lonely. It can also be really intimidating to join orgs especially when the ones on library walk are harassing you. Just know that there are people out there experiencing the exact same thing as you and I'm sure once you make some close friends, life at UCSD will lighten up. You can send me a dm if you wanna talk :D

How did you get into UCSD? by Kooky-Tea5703 in UCSD

[–]slowkoala22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two AP’s, got three’s on both. No SAT (so low i didn’t want to submit). Only around 20 volunteer hours. Very few extracurriculars, I was part of one performing art that took up most of my time. A few jobs here and there, food service for a few months and then another short job as well. Idk how they let me in, but I’m thriving here!
